1978 AL East: Bucky Dent's 15 minutes

In midseason, it looked like the Red Sox were going to run away with it -- a 10-game lead over the second-place Brewers, and a 14½-game lead over the Yankees. Then the Yankees came back, including a devastating four-game sweep at Fenway in early September known as the "Boston Massacre," and opened a 3½-game lead. Which the Red Sox closed by winning their final eight games. A tie at season's end forced a one-game playoff at Fenway.

Bucky Dent rescued the Yankees in 1978.

You know the story: Bucky Dent's three-run homer off Mike Torrez won the game for the Yankees. But nobody knew what would happen as Phil Rizzuto pattered away in the fourth inning (from "O Holy Cow!: The Selected verse of Phil Rizzuto"):

One ball two strikes on Nettles,

Every pitch and every play

So important in this ball game.

Imagine two teams

Coming down to the end of the season,

Both winning 99 games,

Everybody thought 95 would win the pennant,

And it all boils down

To this one playoff game.

All right, Torrez ready.

The one-two pitch ...

THE DATE

October 26, 1986.

THE PLACE

Shea Stadium, New York.

THE SITUATION

The 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets. The Red Sox had taken a 5-3 lead in the top of the 10th, but the Mets had tied the score and had Ray Knight at second with two out and Mookie Wilson facing reliever Bob Stanley.

THE KEY PLAYERS

Boston's Bill Buckner and Bob Stanley and New York's Wilson and Knight.

THE MOMENT

Wilson reached out and slapped a 3-2 pitch from Stanley down the first base line. Buckner, the first baseman, was waiting to field the ball. However, Buckner didn't get his glove low enough. The ball rolled through Buckner's legs for an error, and Knight scored from second base to give the Mets an unbelievable 6-5 victory.

THE CALL

"So the winning run is at second base with two out. Three-and-two to Mookie Wilson. . . . A little roller up along first . . . behind the bag . . . it gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight! And the Mets win it!" -- Vin Scully, NBC-TV.
