Here's the official word:

Dear Hooj Member,

It is with deep regret that we have to inform you that Hooj Choons, as we know it, is no more. Following two years of fairly horrendous financial struggle, during which time we fought to trade our way out of mounting debt problems, we've had to call in the professionals to resolve matters once and for all.

Naturally, this has come about as a direct result of: Sept 11/ any middle eastern conflict you care to name/ downloading/ the slump in the global economy/ music industry/ dance music industry... No, the truth is that as distinguished labels, clubs and magazines shut down around us, we failed to react quickly or effectively enough to what was going on. We thought we'd seen this happen before, and could work our way out of it, but this was a different kind of slump.

It feels like we should write some kind of mini - obituary for Hooj at this point, but maybe everything that needs to be remembered about us is out there already: a hundred and thirty six releases spanning 13 years, all of them, for better or for worse, trying to live up to our original aim of remaining 'occasional providers of half decent house'.

(Key members of staff will be carrying on the work of hooj.com, one of the few beacons of hope amongst the gloom of recent times, under a new name and ownership. Please see separate Hooj.com statement for details at the top of the board).

Its been a long, and until recently, enjoyable ride and we thank everyone for their support over the past twelve years.

Yours,

The Hooj Mob

lol, easy to blame downloading when in reality there is zero corelation between downloading and lables going out of business.

House music is over, it had a nice 15 year run, but it's over, that is first and foremost

Second, the people downloading the tracks like me, never would buy them sinc:

a. can't get them on cds

b. if you can get them on cds, it's months later

third off, they clearly said in the email they fucked up and didn't read the market right.. They thought it would come back like that other times.. So you are blameing me for them being bad businessmen??????

forth- they sell records!!! Only djs use RECORDS. Thus their market is so limited, they are left open to huge risk. Maybe i'll start selling brand new 8 tracks next week:laugh:

bad businessmen, bad business model and the market as a whole is ova..

It is a sad day for music, indeed...

Hooj released one of my fave tracks of the year so far... BERMUDA TRIANGLE "Mooger Fooger" ... the HUUUGE and highy demanded "Acapulco" ... and who can forget SOUND IN MOTION??? :blank::(

BTW, we have "Acapulco" @ Grooveman if you want to stop by today... Saw a copy or 2 yesterday. ;) Doubt it will last long, though...

RIP Hooj... I hope they come back w/ avengeance & renewed energies when the time is right. :)

I became aware of Hooj Choons almost 7 years ago and immediately fell in love with the label. I called up Red Jerry, (Hooj Boss) and suggested we do a conference party at Shadow Lounge. He had never done a conference gig for the label and was amazed that I had even asked...Jerry is a very humble guy. We made a deal over the phone without a contract or anything written between us and threw the first Hooj Conference Pre-party. It was an amazing night with so much talent. I quickly became friends with the whole Hooj crew. Never have I met a group of people in this industry who were so dedicated to the music and culture. You couldn't help loving them. Last conference we did our 6th Annual Hooj conference event together. Just like the first, it was a handshake deal, a true industry event and a massive success. Jerry, Ross, and the rest of the Hoojers are a real class act and I will miss the label greatly. It really is a sad day for the Dance Scene.
