For those who have clubbed in New York and LA

Fuck Sound Factory, fuck Exit and all those NY clowns and juiceheads and trendies and poseurs who pay $50 to see Jonathan Peters, Razor & Guido and a bunch of other wannabe house dj's. However, much respect to Peter Gatien and all the real clubkids in the 90's for building the scene.

Check out Shelter for Body & Soul. Centro-fly is also excellent and just completed remodelling. Arc (the old Vinyl) is a dark and filthy club that's only about the music. If youy like to see and be seen, if you like to get decked out in fashion and all that, if you like VIP rooms, you won't like it. Lighting and sound are amazing. Visit on friday night for Danny Tenaglia's Be Yourself.

Avalon just opened in the old Limelight cathedral. Crowd is so-so but New Yorkers Joeski and Onionz have a monthly residency. On it's opening night, the line-up was Lee Burridge and Hipp-E + Halo! Miami's current club scene? BOLLOCKS!!!

I can't comment on LA, haven't been there yet.

I particularly like the Sullivan Room.

Oh, and I forgot to mention...

Comparing Space or NV or Opium to a good club is like comparing the size of a single cell bacteria standing right next to a neutron star or a white dwarf!

And the guest line-up at Space is comparative to what would happen if Cavo Paradiso, Pacha Ibiza or Fabric were to book The Sesame Street Music crew for a 2004 New Years Eve party!!!

Body and Soul doesn't exist anymore. There may be imitators, but...

If you want to check out a couple of DJs that made up the Body and Soul team, Danny Krivit does his thing at the "718 Sessions" which I believe is still on a monthly basis only, and usually in Brooklyn. Francois K does his thing on Mondays at Cielo in the meatpacking district. I haven't kept up with where Clausell has been.

miami has one dj

oscar g

Rivera is known as a nyc guy... he was smart to get away from the miami label..

Besides those two, there is no djs here that have mass apeal. Sure some in some circles are popular, but when it comes to mass apeal, nyc blows the fucking door off miamis one dj one club town...

For every 10 places you hear about in nyc, there is 484848484 more you haven't

And Ohm was the best lounge... Centrol Fly is like the crobar of nyc, it's gay... Exit was sick, then turned into gook heaven..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As an instigator (but not only), I have to disagree with you on a few points Saleen...

First off, people should realize that Exit and Sound Factory are mainstream NYC clubs...NOT UNDERGROUND!!!

By JP, if you're referring to Jonathan Peters, you're just one of the thousands of "bridge and tunnel peeps" who flock to the City for a night of ear shattering noise!!!

And although I'm a DT fan, I can't neglect the very obviuous truth that Junior has his respectful pedestal in the NYC scene.

Centro-Fly is a club that I wouldn't call underground but not mainstream either. The crowd is your typical NYC crowd, much older than at Arc but it is definitely NOT gay!!! I have seen some of my favorite dj's there and they rocked!!! Low End specialists are quite good and Marcus and Dominique are just phenomenal. I definitely disagree that Miami has one dj!!! And being one who doesn't give a shit about mass appeal, I would definitely have to agree with you that the best nightlife in NYC lurks in the small bars and lounges. The ones no one's heard of!!!

I lived in NY during 2001 and went out literally every weekend, mostly to Centro-Fly and then Vinyl for after hours.

Centro (especially when Subliminal Sessions ran there on Thursdays) brought in some serious, serious talent....Derrick Carter, Darren Emerseon, Deep Dish, Roger S, Basement Jaxx, Todd Terry, I saw it all.

Vinyl was sick too...but no booze...

I didn't like the Shelter crowd that much...not very friendly.

However, Space tops it all by far...people, vibe, and music.

Support the scene your in, regardless where you live.

the problem is that no where in miami is underground, it only has two clubs, and both of them are as commercial as they get, does 93.1 ring a bell?

SF is the best club in america period. No club has a more fanatical following then SF.... How can a crowd show up at 8am when it "starts to get good" not be underground??? It's as underground you can get for being such a high profile club...

JR V is by far the most known real dj on earth... Where jr goes, people go, and damm chicks love jr's sets, and i can see why, they are fun and he plays it all. Remember the song "if madonna calls tell her i'm not here".... Only jr could pull that off...

If Dade follows threw with his master plan at nocturnal and if it works, which i think it will, then all these miami jocks are in real trouble. Miami jocks refuse and can't play the funky, housey, vocal fun beats that is taking the scene back over. Fact is chicks love the nyc sound and fun sound a felix or a todd terry can bang out... Space is only one step from being shut down, don't be fooled into thinking they are in the clear, they arent, they just bought some time and if they do go down, then miami is left with one club, crobar which sucks... There is more to do in mid town then all of miami...

it all really boils down to matter of opinion...i was fortunate enough to have been to twilo, and although it was a GREAT night out, the original space was better and the parties at space continued much longer... twilo usually shut it down by 10am (i know S&D nights went a little later) also i know a few people from the nyc area that come down to wmc every year and they always go crazy over the clubs/vibe in miami...to each his own

Ok have to add my 2 cents :)

It is all dependent on what type of person you are - what degree nightlife is important/influential to your life and career (aka if you work in the industry, if you're a complete night/afterhours person, or if your main social life activity is clubs/music etc) There's a HUGE difference between an occasional lounge person, and a go out 3 times a week + marathon afterhours person - and 100 different levels in between. Working in the industry adds a whole different factor - population, laws, investors, turn around time, job openings - those fluctuate with location which in turn makes one location better career/$ wise for some people, and other locations better for others - beyond just a personal opinion. And again some people like the fast pace and plethora of EVERYTHING of NY, and some people woudl rather have a slower, less cut throat environment, it's totally individual. What's better to one person might be miserable to the next.. And as we age , our opinions change :) what was amazing at 18 doesn't cut it at 25 etc etc..

I grew up in NY, and lived in Manhattan from 1997-Jan 2003 when I moved to SoBe. I worked consistently in clubs for about 90 percent of that time, so for me nothing can compare to the $, opportunity and people - but someone growing up in Miami or LA in my situation would most likely say that about whatever their home town is. There's more opportunity and places but more competition for those jobs , and more drama/mess. My boyfriend does lighting 4 clubs down here and has built up a good amt of experience/reputation so its relatively easy to get work.....but in NY he'd have 100 other qualified lighting guys trying to get the same job - and while he would prob make more, cost of living is more, so it would even out overall...

The one concrete + about NY is the crazy amt of creativity, new ideas/places/HUGE choice music wise, and location/venue wise. I love SoBe, but after living in NY It doesnt do much for me variety-wise. For me I am driven by the madness and change and constant flow of new places, people, ideas, craziness - that is what makes everything interesting and motivates me and drives me to want to work in the business. But as much as NY is ideal for me for that reason, some people may be turned off by that, and deterred by the shadiness and mess - and might do better in calmer, less nuts place........

There is much more $ put into a lot of places in NY which is a plus, as soon as something fails its bought and turned into something new, it keeps you on your toes.....Sometimes the masses make something fail (aka exit as someone already mentioned) but the followings of some dj's are a nice consistency - aka JR, Jonathan, Victor, etc - the promotion teams and DJ's will always have a home even if its random and smaller (JR) and a little cheesy (Jonathan) you ALWAYS have that choice. I find you need to struggle a little bit down here to find your niche and (at least for me) NY kind of pushes you and throws 100 things at you which is great to have....Again that's just My opinion :) but I think many people into music and the nightlife really value the excess of NY and after leaving for a while end up coming back / appreciating NY more. Even in Ibiza ( i spent a month there in 2001) was crazy, different, amazing experience- you do appreciate NY after leaving!!!

Then again I am always pushing the issue of timing - from 1994-98 the old Limelight/Disco 2000, USA, Palladium/Arena, Robots, etc era - was unreal in terms of laws, music, freedom, new ideas, people, etc - and all that was changed by the post 98 slump, closing of Palladium/Arena, LAWS /Guli, and just a general tired-ness of everyone and generation change.....For me, I could never have the same times I had back then in the 2000's so that 'era' is totally over for me, but someone 18 would feel differently....Same as SoBe was huge years ago , every place goes up and down.........

There are pros and cons about every place...I can tell you 100 things I love about NY and 100 things I hate, same as Miami, but its just that overall personal preference - where you feel at home and what drives you - what type of person u are......When I lived in NY a lot of ppl would complain about it and praise SoBe, a lot of ppl down here lives for NYC and complains about Sobe, the grass is always greener :) In terms of the ppl who are FROM NYC, its really hard to leave permanently -- but ppl who arent from there would find it a little overwhelming and oversaturated, so where you grew up is an influence as well...

Sorry for the rambling :)

but if u really wanna know, NY and LA have vibes that can put space to shame on thier best night

Well thats Easy since Space sucks.

And I'll agree that NY has a better club sceen on whole, mainly due to the many smaller venu's. Cielo comes to mind.

But the bigger clubs honestly give me a fucking rash on my ass from the attitudes and actions of a outspoken minority albeit a large minority... of total shit heads and guidos.

BTW LA sucks... sure there are nights, and there a a few decent clubs, but all in all.... cheese, be seen crowd, or just down right dick heads.
