i don't really know too many of the peeps on this board anymore, but for the few of you that might be interested, or the ones that are awake and looking for something to listen to....

yes you read that right! i'm doing a little compilation series called 'songs from within' and volume 1 will be played on chloe's bsides show tomorrow on proton. this is not a dj mix, nor is it anything close to "dance" music. just melody, emotion, guitars, vocals and individual tracks. i'll post the tracklist tomorrow, but for now i want a few surprises ;)

here's the discription and intro that i wrote for the first volume:

i have come to a point in my life that things no longer excite me in the way they used to. some of the meaning has escaped and in dealing with a rather down time in my life, i have come to the conclusion that i have to offer something to someone. so this is it. i have never been a dj. i have never been a musician. yet through music i have always expressed myself. i feel there are loads of good songs out there. some that you have heard. some that you may have not. with this i'm going to try to pool together a series of songs and moments that have meaning to me. maybe make some people go out and buy some artists albums they may not own or have heard of. or maybe just bring back some old memories along the way.

being a person who never has liked the concept of an individual track, but more interested in the flow of an entire artist album. i found it was somewhat difficult to take tracks out of the natural listening order of the original albums that their artist intended. so hopefully these will make some sense. mostly i'm going to put together tracks from albums that may or may not be obvious. including lots of non-singles etc. there will be some deeper meaning, but probably only to myself. some of you may figure out the journey. others may just listen in.

i am over "dance" music and the concept of the dj culture that has come out of it. i'm going back before, as well as after, and into the future. a ton of influence from chris coco, rob da bank and the blue room... a bit of back to mine and nights at jazid, where the seed of this concept was planted. to bring forth something i could show outside of the beats and seamless mixes. i probably have about 4 volumes of this in my head already, but with time and inspiration i think there will be more. hopefully there is the interest in this.

a bit of melancholy, a lot of melody, a heavy dose of poetic grace and the raw emotion of music. enjoy.

james, i don't see you post on the g.u. board anymore. i have been on that board for a few years, and in the past, you always provided a wealth of info. regarding miami and its scene, etc. thanks for that! good luck with future endeavors and i hope you find the "passion" for electronic music again. having been around the scene for over 10 years now, i get bored with it too from time to time. but it always seems to lure me back because it REALLY is all about the music

James!

Good to see you around here again - that tracklisting looked good. Interesting that you would write about being bored with dance music, because I feel the same way. I've been feeling it for a while, but I always thought my interest in dance music would come back. It really hasn't. I don't much listen to any of those old CDs I used to be so excited about anymore, and I'm certainly not interested in hitting a club to see so-and-so DJ.

It sounds to me that you're just interested in good old-fashioned tunes. I agree with you about preferring the concept of an "album," but sadly, there aren't too many great albums anymore. I don't think there will ever be more GREAT ALBUMS like Dark Side of the Moon, Disintegration, Music For The Masses, Siamese Dream, OK Computer and other old albums of that caliber.

It also feels to me that I've "heard everything before," and I hate that feeling. I always want to hear something new, groundbreaking and amazing, and it's just not happening. There are enjoyable albums - I am very much enjoying Four Tet - Rounds and Denali - The Instinct, for example - and I still enjoy the odd night out at PopLife - but unfortunately, music just doesn't move me the way it once did. Perhaps I expect too much out of music, or maybe it's just a by-product of getting older..

Hey man - I remember you, too. I gotta come by here more often. The Four Tet album is probably a good representation of "where I'm at" now - I am enjoying the whole folksy/glitchy/clicky techno thing. And indie rock, too - it's just that while I can rattle off a bunch of indie rock tracks I'm currently enjoying, the albums themselves are often lacking. Seems like it's often 2-3 tracks where it all comes together, and the rest of the CD is the musical equivalent of dog food.

Definitely check out the Denali CD - I don't know who I would use as a reference point...I think the singer sounds a bit like Beth Gibbons, but that's open to interpretation. Anyway, it's on the Jade Tree label.
