TRANCE or HOUSE

What comes to mind when u hear someone say

- Trance music

or

- House music

what is your preference?

Did you ever listen to one type & then switched to another.

If so why?

what has evolved since the beginning when Trance ruled the beach as to what it has ended up today..

Why did trance really die out & why did House stay on top. (at least in Miami)

Trance will always be on top in my cd books.

But i would like to hear some responses on the EDM scene of today as oppose to the EDM scene of yesterday.

Well, I am and always be geared towards house, because the epic anthem

breakdowns of yesteryear's trance got boring to me, and my ear developed

a more technical feel for both composition and feel.

However, I also DO like some trance and find myself torn at times when I come

across producers that throw me off - in example: MATTHEW DEKAY.

When I heard his work with Norman Soares "Move Yo", I didnt know which way

to pull!!

Is it house? progressive? trance with a house feel?

I dont know....but all I know is that I enjoy it. :)

Well, like I have posted before when I first got into the scene I did listen to Trance.......but I never enjoyed it. I mean the Trance from 99 did BLOW some mayor BALLS!! But that was all that was available in Orlando that and Breaks Beats which I must say I did enjoy and to this day still enjoy it!!!

Now when I finally got back to my hometown SWEET MIAMI, I discovered Space this was 2001.......that is when We still had The Blue Room and The Red Room and Salsa in the Patio. Now Edgar was the Resident in the Blue Room and when I heard him I must say he Blew me AWAY!!!!! Later I discovered The Infamous Patio afterhours and HOUSE MUSIC...............THAT FOR ME WAS IT right then and there I FELL in LOVE WITH HOUSE MUSIC, and have never looked back and don't plan on it either. That still does not mean I am open to other Genres, but I will always stick to my FIRST PASSION and always will.

Now as for people that go around saying that Trance is a PILL HEAD Genre, what I find funny is that this is mostly said by HouseHeads.......all those that say that are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO full of shit, may I remind you that Space is a HouseHead Haven, and to my knowledge 90% or maybe even more of a percentage is FUCKED UP out of their minds on not just Pills, but K, G, Coke, Crystal, and lord knows what other Drugs we can fit into our system!!! Notice how I said "OUR" that's because yes I am one those percentage and so are the people that talk down on the Trance crowd......so you know what don't criticize or bring down a Genre just because you don't like it cause you know you're doing the same if not more, it only makes you and us STUPID!!!!!

And also, I don't beleive that if you TRULY LOVE a type of GENRE that it is that easy to switch to another one, if you do it's because you never really LOVED the first one!!!!!

Those are just my 2cents!!!

OKAY..

so how many used to listen to TRANCE & how many no longer listen to trance & now listen to house??

My love for trance can only be compared to my love for house...they are both derivations and share lots of elements, when they don't cross paths...but I have good reasons.

I was always a reggae and punk, meat and potatoes kind'a guy, aight? ;) I got introduced to electronic music through bass, new wave, industrial and euro pop...trance was the first edm movement to trascend to the masses, you could see videos from uk with raves that were out of this world, whole stadiums jumping at unisone...wicked! All the global underground, Ibiza and the whole phenomenon of electronic music in spain (for example) all of that floaded to Miami...and it happened gradually but fast nevetheless.

All this foreign monster came one day to Miami and I was lucky enough to take it all in, I didn't pick sides...I wasn't a breaker or a drum&basser or a trancer...I would go to as many jams I could...KGB, The Spot, Mars, Kitchen Club, Hungry Sailor (for reggae) and Chili Pepper for ska shows, small concerts of major acts at the moment...we were a small quiet seaside town once.

How can I decide one from the other? I can't...each kind of music puts me in a different mood, I apply it differently...I behave differently, probably.

House is great getting down...it's dirty, tribal, funky, sexy and also very elegant...more organic...it gives more headroom for expression on the dancefloor, although I have only one step that I know which I use for everything...the steps never change, my face is what changes, it's an optical ilusion.

Trance is more of a testosterone driven vibe, by definition it's made to get the one who listen in a state of trance...if you want it.

I can't drive with house or trance...I could, but I won't, can't work with EDM either...during the day I listen to bands, to rock, reggae, acoustic...Jack Johnson, U2...believe it or not, I find my daily trance and house doses in lot of different styles of music...an acoustic guitar could be playing a trancy rythm...and blah, blah, blah...to be continued

Killer thread!

I've never put down trance as you mention because I USED to listen to it...

I may fuck with Matt for a bit just 'cos he loves to fuck with the househeads

but the truth of it is that unless you lived here in MIA back then...you'd know.

You have to understand that trance made it big back in '98-'00 here in Miami.

There was not one spot in the area that didnt play it, idolize it or need it.

The big dogs were Acosta & Padilla followed Edgar V, Eddie G, Ariel Baund & a few other locals....when a big name DJ came across town..it was a BIG DEAL.

Soon enuff though there was a plethora of dj's playing the same tracks and it was stuck, going practically nowhere.

Hello 2001...a new sound is dropped and everyone turns their heads:

"What is that?" Sounds are different, the feel is deeper!

The clubgoers welcome the difference and embrace it with open arms.

Trance is now "2 years ago", people still like it...but wont run towards it like they did before.

This is where the transition took place - why listen to "Toca's Miracle"

when you could be listening to Celeda's "Be Yourself"?

I dont point a finger to a specific genre like many do and say:

"That shit sucks!" - I'd be a hypocrate!! :nono:

So...I love my house, still like my trance & def rock to them breakbeats*!

*But that's a whole new subject!! :bounce::)

I like to think of myself as a musician first. So I tend to look for the similarities more than the differences. I have a long history with EDM; back to Joy Division. So to pick a favorite, I can’t. I won’t.

There seems to be a difference in the types of crowds that favor different types of music. Not to generalize, but I've seen how the vibe can change from one extreme to another.

where are all the Househeads that were once Tranceheads???

I would like some feedback on those who were once diehard tranceheads & now are diehard househeads.

Funny how when someone post a thread about a certain trance dj or about a trance event they go ape shit on bashing it. cheese this cheese that.

yet the ones who bash it were once harcore tranceheads then all of a sudden became househeads.

i don't understand. how can one love a certain music so much & then hate it.

why is that??

Is it because of the stereotyping trance gets????

i really don't get it.. i would really like to know.

Especially how alot of those who jumped the bandwagon have not yet posted but one person. even then that one person has avoided the purpose of the thread.

does one choose to listen to the music because it's what YOU like??

or

Is it because all of your friends choose to listen to something else & you figured you don't want them to know you still listen to it??

So thats why you end up jumping bandwagon???

So i say this..

:direct::direct:

COME OUT..... COME OUT WHERE EVER YOU ARE!!!!! BANDWAGON JUMPERS!!!!

:direct::direct:

LETS HERE YOUR THOUGHT ABOUT THIS TOPIC...

or shall i start naming names...

i used to like trance...i use to spin trance (+ house and breaks).... we're talking '92-'98ish trance though....

but once it hit the "cookie-cutter" format that it's developed (errr....abated, rather) into in the recent 5+ years, i lost interest. there are a few (very few, mind you) that are making attempts at breaking the mold, but there's little hope since the genre has hit an almost "mini-pop" bearing within the electronic music realm.

tell me...where is the Two Full Moons and a Trout (Caspar Pound rmx) of today?... no Binary Finary, no Cafe Del Mar, no Be As One, no Gamemaster... just the same recycled high-hat line for years.... same kick, same snare... same build/breakdown format with the exact same measure count sequence... same pad/strings...etc etc etc, and so on.

aside from the preset production, it seems the trance DJs (for the most part) today don't care. when PVD gets a buttload of cash to show up and does an amateur maneuver like push the 12" during a pad/string section (ie: "wheerriiirrrreeerrriirrrrr!!!"), it doesn't provide much foundation for

argument regarding overall skills of today's trance dj.

i could go on and on.... i've seen/heard this genre go through its' motions since the early 90s. there was a time where i would get excited over the next big trance track. i can't remember when the last time that was though...

fortunately, other genres continue to progress...especially tech-house. so much interesting and intelligent stuff happening in that department lately...

Do you think this may have been a result of some trying to commercialize trance?

Perhaps Im one of those that got introduced to the scene through the Eurodance.. As far as I can remember to like the early 90's, all this eurodance tracks, that were also thrown out to some of the Raves.. there were some dope tracks back then.. but I got intensily into trance back in 99.. yeah the golden year. There was an extrodinaire amount of quality trance tracks back then.. perhaps because it was the first major exposure of this genre with an exponential expansion in terms of music artists and productions arising on this Genre. I really got into it full force.. and within it this same DJ's that played trance have opened up my ears into everything else that goes beyond it.. House, be it Tribal, Funky.. Lounge music, ambient... tech trance- tech-house... and on and on.. I have not left my love for trance... there's stuff out there that I listen to and gives me that wierd, awesome feeling deep down my stomach, and it just gives u a smile... gives you the trance feeling... while house is more like a fun dancing music, in a different way... AS for me, I love trance, but my ear accepts and helps me enjoy all the other genres that EDM has to offer... just stay true to where you found your roots ;-)

imo, it's exceeded the "trying" phase...at least within the EDM realm, as i said before... when something works, it becomes a marketable format. it's a pop mentality...we've all been suckered into it for ages... even in industries outside of music (ie: tv, etc).

electronic music used to be a relief from the mainstream... still is, in many instances. but, the success of labels like Perfecto changed that... i can't blame anyone for wanting to make money off of doing something they love...we all dream of that. but commercialism and the influx of $ seems to put a cap on the creative out-of-the-box approaches...
