Studio 54 - Expanding its walls

Finally, Studio 54 is making a move to bring in new clientelle. For those of you who haven't been to the MGM lately, the front of the casino is a large construction area. Studio 54 is going to knock down their front wall and push it out at least 20 ft. They are doing renovations to the VIP section, along with adding a new part which will be a good size. Will all of these renovations bring Studio 54 back and make it a top venue again? Even if they still can't compete with the likes of Pure, the renovations will still make the club better than it is now.

54 definitely needs to step its game up. Back in 2001 it was considered one, if not THE, top club out here. Looks like after all the new megaclubs landed out here in the past year, 54 got a reality check that their shit really does stink. I hope they improve, as the MGM should have a megaclub of its own to compete with the rest.

MGM needs to right-off that name purchase/license from Mark Fleischman or the originals, and opt for a new name. In the world of nightlife, venues rarely do relaunches, they do rebranding.

I too would be up for them dumping the cheesy wannabe name, and coming up with something new. The original Studio is a legend, and helped launch a new era of nightclubbing in America. The knockoff at the MGM, however, never had a chance to even begin to approach the lofty heights of the original. Don't harken back to yesteryear when you should be helping push the Las Vegas club scene forward. That's just my opinion.

I totally agree with that. And adding to that, the main room looks cheesy as hell. The club needs a facelift both physically and administratively.

The layout of Studio 54 is decent. The only bad part about the layout is that it is a one-room venue with one kind of music, and the same set over and over again. One good thing about Studio 54 is the finger sandwiches and cookies in the VIP section.

I wasn't really a big fan of the layout, and the decor just has to go. The decor around the dancefloor is like Saturday Night Fever, and the rest of the place is basically a photography exhibit. Good for them that they've been successful for such a long time, but Studio is definitely in need of an overhaul.

LOL. This gave me a laugh, but unfortunately, it's true. I do agree that they need an overhaul. In order to get their pulling power back to be able to hang with the power players like Tao, Body English, or Pure, they really need to make a change. If they did nothing, their club would continue to lose patrons to these other venues.

Even #1 venues never do ... or admit to do ... a expansion to their walls. They do a head to floor remodel, and they make it a point that you know iit and talk about it. Sometimes only cosmetic, sometimes functional (new sound/light system), sometimes space changing (new vip areas).

But a wall expansion is laughable in the industry.... like saying you changed the lightbulbs over the bar. Id give a dollar for venues that everytime you show up the wall is there, then not there, then there again -- and thats being sober lol.

I consider it poetic justice; after all the years of the bouncers being assholes to the general public waiting hours in line, they now can barely bring a decent crowd. I can't wait until Pure suffers the same painful death.

Studio 54 has been a major player on the strip since the day that it was opened, until its recent downfall to mega-venues. The renovation to Studio 54 will definitely help out with the drawing power of the venue. I believe that they're planning to launch a whole new marketing campaign to rebuild their clientelle.

People made a few comments in this post about them changing the name from Studio 54 to something else. I would have to disagree. I'm sure that a number of people know about the legend of the original Studio 54 in New York. In my opinion, the name "Studio 54" is a draw by itself to people who want to see if the legend lives on in a new venue.

I disagree, in that the people to whom they would be marketing their club could largely give a rat's ass about the original. And why should they? They've heard about it, they've heard the stories, but why would they want a wannabe version of a legend that is long since gone? Clearly, the Las Vegas clubgoing public wants state of the art, hip venues, and the numbers at Pure, Tao and Body English reflect that. I mean come on dude, my father used to go to 54, and I am 30 years old. I know a few others who also used to party there, and they too are in their 50s. This is a new generation now, and they want something new and exciting, not a rehash. The names Crobar, Avalon and Space mean a great deal more to the clubgoer of today than Studio 54 does.

You make a good point, and you are right in the respect of "club technology." People do want newer, nicer, bigger and better. On the other hand, I still think that the name is still intriguing to many people. After all, they did make a movie about the original Studio 54 which was probably watched by a number of people in our age group. As we all know, most people do what their told. If they were told that the original Studio 54 was phenomenal, they would probably think that Studio 54 at the MGM was also phenomenal just because they had the same name.

I think that if Studio was new, then you might be correct. However, it's eight years old now, and is simply not mentioned in the same breath as the big three heavy hitters in town right now. I just think that if they're going to offer the same old thing, only bigger, that this will not do nearly as much for the future of the club as letting Avalon or Crobar take it over would.

People arent stupid. The name was intriguing when it was in NYC with Steve Rubell & Ian Schrager when it was a circus act of decadence and free spirit. Rubell ... Schrager ... the hanging spoon ... are all gone from 54. And hence should be the name.

Vegas clubs shouldn't be imitating NY clubs anyways. It pains me to think of how much I miss the clubs back in NYC. Vegas clubs are busy to me, that's about it.

Maybe if they hired some really slutty female bartenders and put a basement in it, then the Vegas Studio 54 might live up to the brandname. hahaha

Rubell and Schrager may be gone, but the half moon and the hanging spoon are still in the club. With the renovations of Studio 54, I think they plan to redesign their advertising strategies and market the club it was a brand new venue. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. One thing is for sure. If they don't make a move, they will fall closer to the depths of Club Rio, which would be a tragedy.

I can't believe how much a few years affected Club Rio. It's really hurting. How about Bikinis? I haven't been there in 2 years. I hear nothing about that place either.

Is Bikini's still open? Las Vegas has the highest "turn over" of nightclubs compared to many cities. A few years back, a few casinos decided to jump on the nightclub bandwagon because they saw a huge profit in the nightlife industry. What they didn't see is that most of the casinos on the strip would catch on to this great idea and build super venues with features that they had never imagined. These big ideas of course cut into the profits of the original casino nightclubs and sent them to a sad demise.

Well, they all had about a 3-5 year window to make money, and that's the business mission for nightclubs. Even the clubs that we think are "dead" are still making money. Casinos will not keep a club open if it is losing money.

I want to Club Rio about a month ago, around 3am..............WEAK. I can't believe it was the first nightclub I ever stepped foot in some 5 years ago.
