An all-night hip-hop party at downtown Miami's Club Metropolis turned into pandemonium early Monday, as shots were fired inside, sending a torrent of club-goers scrambling for the door.

Inside, one man who had been stabbed to death lay on the floor. Another had been shot in the thigh, and a third man's leg was grazed by a bullet. The melee sent more than 1,100 partyers fleeing toward the parking lot.

''It was mass chaos out there,'' said Ignatius Carroll, a spokesman for Miami fire rescue.

Roger Hall, 22, of Richmond Heights was killed in the ruckus, which erupted around 4 a.m. while a rap artist was still performing on stage at the club, 950 NE Second Ave. A one-time star quarterback at Southridge High and the father of a 2-year-old boy, Hall worked with his father and brother at a South Dade roofing company. He and his father, Roger Hall Sr., had watched golf on Sunday and talked over Red Lobster takeout -- which they took turns paying for each pay day. Then Hall headed out for the night in his brother's car.

As the sun set Monday, dozens of family members and friends gathered on the lawn outside the family's home, with few clues about what happened inside Club Metropolis.

''My son is dead, and I don't know why,'' said Roger Hall Sr., 59.

Lee Fowner, 22, of the Fontainebleau area, had surgery for his gunshot injury at Jackson Memorial Hospital and was in stable condition, authorities said. And 26-year-old Coconut Grove resident Ijamyn Gray, who said he was left bleeding when a bullet grazed his right shin, was treated at the hospital and released.

''There are so many different stories, I don't realy know what happened,'' Gray said from his front porch Monday night, after being interviewed by police for three hours. ``Once they heard the shot, everyone took off. I tried to get up and out of the way and I saw the blood on my sock. Everyone was screaming and trying to get the hell out.''

Police suspect an argument in the back of the club -- where a ''Memorial Day College Block Party'' was under way -- sparked the gunfire. Police do not know how many shots were fired or who had a gun, Moss said. No weapons were found inside the club.

''We really don't know what happened at this point,'' Moss said, adding that police hope to glean a clearer picture from interviews with witnesses and employees. ``We're also hoping that some of those people who were at the club, if they saw something that will help us, that they'll give us a call.''

One partyer, Liane Vasserot, said she was in the main room, Prophecy, one of five themed ''nightclubs'' inside the 35,000-square-foot club, when she heard the gunshots.

''There was a fight. There was a shooting. We heard it,'' she said. ``It was so crowded inside, all you saw was a commotion. . . . It was a mob scene.''

Representatives for Metropolis estimated the crowd at about 1,100, police said, but authorities put that number at close to or above its 2,000-person capacity.

''The club capacity, talking to the owner, showed about 2,000 people, but there had to be more than that in the club,'' said Carroll, who added that masses of people were spilling out into the parking lot and an area across the street.

''That whole block was just filled with people,'' he said.

According to the city of Miami's website, the club has been cited for failing to have a valid occupational license and a certificate of use. The cases are still open, the site said. Because Monday was a holiday, city spokeswoman Kelly Penton said she could not reach any code enforcement officials for comment.

The club's owners also could not be reached for comment.

Six off-duty officers were hired by the club, handling parking and crowd control outside the building, Moss said. Metal detectors used by security at the door were running low on batteries, he added, which may be why someone was able to enter undetected with a gun.

The Memorial Day festivities were set to wrap up at 5 a.m., with an after-hours party to follow elsewhere in the building.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

happy hour begins at 7pm, stabbing at 11pm sharp

I Stay in West Palm Beach every Memormial Weekend to avoid "the element" that invades sobe during that weekend. I am sure there was more then one stabbing during that weekend. You forgot the muggings, fights, etc. Seeing how the ATL has canceled their weekend, its nice that they invade Miami instead.
