The (brand spankin' new!) Club Review Thread

weyes

Recommended Posts

i'm starting a new one 'cause things have changed a lot since lalate's ;) old one began. edlosangeles' negative thread about 2 clubs was the inspiration. let me be clear that this thread is for reviews only.

NO PROMOTING IN THIS THREAD!!!!!!

let's try to follow this format and answer all these questions whenever possible when reviewing a club by copying what's below, adding whatever else seems interesting/important/helpful/fun :aright: .

1. name of club & location

2. name of night/event

3. name of night of the week

4. type of music & djs featured & whether or not those particular djs are there every week

5. price

6. is there a guestlist? if so, what does it get you?

7. is there a dress code?

8. free parking availabilty & parking lot availabilty & price

9. door staff policy/attitude

10. age requirement

11. length of wait to get in

12. general staff attitude

13. drink strength & price

14. bottle service & vip availability & price

15. decor/ambience

16. size of club

17. size of dancefloor

18. how many rooms with music in them?

19. quality of patio/smoking area

20. is there a place quiet enough to talk?

21. sound system/lights

22. boy/girl ratio of crowd

23. vibe of crowd

24. overall rating on scale of 1-10 (1 is lowest, 10 is highest)

25. would you go back?

* add comments, if you like :) .

p.s. i'm a real stickler for no clutter, too. not to be no fun, but when these review threads start getting full of too much chit-chat, they're not useful to peeps who are trying to figure out info at-a-glance. besides, it's a great reason to start threads on the forum :aright: !!!

1. name of club & location

vanguard, 6021 hollywood blvd., hollywood

2. name of night/event

giant

3. name of night of the week

saturday

4. type of music & djs featured & whether or not those particular djs are there every week

various types of trance and house, and the djs vary

5. price

pre-sales online at gr o ovetickets.com (type in without spaces) start at $15 then go up in $5 increments as time passes. price at-door usually $25

6. is there a guestlist? if so, what does it get you?

guestlists vary - will update this

7. is there a dress code?

no

8. free parking availabilty & parking lot availabilty & price

no real safe street parking, $10 valet parking

9. door staff policy/attitude

cheery & pleasant

10. age requirement

21 & over

11. length of wait to get in

i arrived at 10:20, no line

12. general staff attitude

i found them generally nice, but my male friend said the bathroom attendant was rude and obnoxious

13. drink strength & price

don't know about strength, but teeny vodka & red bull was $11!

14. bottle service & vip availability & price

bottle service available, don't know what price, vip room upstairs resembling a fish tank :D !

15. decor/ambience

it was unclear whether the booths surrounding the dancefloor were for bottle service only; if they were, there was no place in the main room for people to sit down. vip room was a glassed-in room above the main floor and really nice

16. size of club

huge by l.a. standards

17. size of dancefloor

very, very big

18. how many rooms with music in them?

3 or 4; i wasn't positive :worry:

19. quality of patio/smoking area

very pretty and roomy. has little open-fronted cabana-like booths, as well

20. is there a place quiet enough to talk?

the patio is quiet enough, and the club itself isn't deafeningly loud, overall

21. sound system/lights

really great sound system! very clear and not too loud. lights are good, too

22. boy/girl ratio of crowd

it seemed about equal to me, but i don't really notice those things...

23. vibe of crowd

kind of aloof

24. overall rating on scale of 1-10 (1 is lowest, 10 is highest)

7.5

25. would you go back?

yes; some really good djs play there

comments: the setup was more like that of a new york joint; it was a little odd, for l.a. it was really nice to have a choice of rooms, and the maze-like setup reminded me of just about every club i used to go to back home.

it was overall too expensive. $6 to check your coat is the most i've ever paid, even in new york  . the valet for $10, the $11 drinks, tips, etc., plus cover, leave one with very little moolah at the end of the night.

but my biggest issue is that there was no warmth to the crowd; people were just a little too concerned with looking cool to let themselves have fun  . that was my problem with another little hollywood club that has a "v" in it :laugh2: . i'm hoping that this city regains its soul *cough old spundae cough* and stops perpetuating the stereotype that los angeles is full of phonies.

1. name of club & location

arena, 6655 santa monica blvd., hollywood

2. name of night/event

red

3. name of night of the week

fridays

4. type of music & djs featured & whether or not those particular djs are there every week

95% of the time, trance. there are a bunch of house djs that rotate that open every week for the headliner(s)

5. price

$15 pre-sales on gr oovetickets.com, door price varies

6. is there a guestlist? if so, what does it get you?

guestlist @ www.myspace.com/nexxez has a free before 11pm, $15 after list

7. is there a dress code?

no

8. free parking availabilty & parking lot availabilty & price

some street parking around but very poorly lit area. lot is $6

9. door staff policy/attitude

nice

10. age requirement

21 and over

11. length of wait to get in

i've never had to wait when i've arrived before 10:30

12. general staff attitude

friendly

13. drink strength & price

will update later

14. bottle service & vip availability & price

bottle service available, don't know what price, vip confuses me...

15. decor/ambience

there's a balcony with a railing overlooking the dancefloor, which makes for good people-watching. arena is one open room, which has a nice, friendly feel. the dj stage is high enough to give everyone a really good view, which makes for a good connection between energetic djs and the crowd. not enough seating for me, though

16. size of club

mid-to-large

17. size of dancefloor

the dancefloor pretty much is the club

18. how many rooms with music in them?

only one

19. quality of patio/smoking area

ok, but too small for a club that only has one room. there should be more room for overflow

20. is there a place quiet enough to talk?

the patio will suffice

21. sound system/lights

i find it a little too loud and the lights/visuals on the whole aren't very interesting [the lights sometimes take away from the music. i was so blinded at bt that i had to turn my back to the stage.]

22. boy/girl ratio of crowd

i dunno...

23. vibe of crowd

friendly and relaxed

24. overall rating on scale of 1-10 (1 is lowest, 10 is highest)

8

25. would you go back?

yes, but i'd go a lot more often if they had djs i like on a more regular basis

comments: only having one room with music is a huge drawback. when friends go and are divided in their opinions of the music, it leaves some having a great time while the others are bored.

the free guestlist is terrific in such an expensive world and helps us out in our clubbing lifestyle :aright: ! it truly is something to consider for trance fans on a friday night.

i find that the house djs, though, for the most part, bring new meaning to the word "boring"; there is only one that i like on a consistent basis. that may be why they have the list for early birds. but even the one i do like gets his sets split up as a "vs." against another opening dj, usually, which keeps me dancing for 15 minutes, then wondering why i'm not for the next. i recommend going for a particular headliner and not expecting too much from the house djs. then again, i'm not a hardcore trancehead.

but the crowd is friendly and down-to-earth, and that matters a great deal to me. this is a no b.s. crowd, and it's nice to be around people who are genuinely there to have a good time, not to impress people. i love to watch people at red dance because, since it comes from the heart, they have the most original style i've ever seen :woah: . that, you have to see to believe.

crowd: 5

25. would you go back?

yes.

This is a gorgeous new venue that lalate attended during its opening week and thereafter. The venue is situation in a famous old bank that thereafter became an equally famous recording studio. If you remember Joya from a few years back, this venue has a similar floorplan of a raised loft layout. What sets this venue above the rest in new venue openings the last 18 months is this venue seeks to bring the outside in through light, rather than opt for the traditional dark decore and dim approach. The owners brought in massive windows that surround the venue, and have an expansive patio off a glassed entrance. The decore is modern yet all in a sandstone atmosphere.

Another triumph is the dj's situation. He/she is placed perched above the door's entrance. In essence, this is a dj's venue because the enter focus of this (corner lot) structure is that front door and the dj's space.

The crowd is lacking. The venue definitely needs some serious promoters to come in a do an industry night (which is what lalate has suggested) because the meals are great but the attendance is already slow and the venue is not reaching capacity when we arrived.

Overall, a great designed new venue that has huge potential with the entry of the right crowd.

1 correction about the Arena review:

Arena:

18. how many rooms with music in them?

only one

Actually, Arena has 2 rooms of music, although they don't promote the other room at all. When you immediately walk in and go past the coat check on your right, you will see a set of stairs. If you go up the stairs, there is another room with a DJ playing house. It's not very well known and they don't promote it at all, but it's there. If only they had bigger/better DJ's there, it would be a nice change of pace from the usual trance crap in the main room.

24. overall rating on scale of 1-10 (1 is lowest, 10 is highest)

7

25. would you go back?

if a performer that i like were there. resident daniel ledisko was pretty good, but the ridiculous $20 parking is something to take into account

comments: the crowd was weird... these were the worst dancers i've ever seen - like 8-year-olds at a wedding. they looked like they were having fun, though, so more power to 'em :funny: ! as long as people are happy, it makes for good times. it was strange, though, to have a crappy live band, house djs, and a rapper (lady sovereign) in one night :shaky: .

are you talking about the vip room?

I don't know if it's a vip room since anyone can walk in there and hang out, and there is no security there or anything. I think they also serve food up there, although I've never ordered anything. I think it's just a chill room for people to hang out in.

in my experience, it depends what time you go. i've been going to red for years, though, and that used to be the case. perhaps it isn't, any longer.
