  1. I'd say you're both right... I do work in the industry and I will leave it at that. That being said, if you give your track to ESTABLISHED DJ'S (not necessarily Danny or someone that high profile, could be a DJ you trust that knows people at labels as well), you could have a better chance of getting signed. If the A&R's and connects that THEY know hear that it's doing well with their crowd, etc., it'll get the track listened to, at the very least. Anytime a label exec hears that there's a buzz on a record they become interested. Of course, this is assuming that the record in question is actually good. Be careful though, I wouldn't start giving it out left and right to every DJ you know...once it's leaked severely, there will obviously be less sales, and this may or may not have an effect on its demand. I wouldn't say that doing it this way is a dead end though...it has worked for several producers this way. However, it's not a guarantee that you'll get signed or even that anyone will notice you. Also, as said, your best bet (if you don't know or can't get to the DJ movers and shakers) is sending directly to A&R's. Make sure the particular label you send to accepts unsolicited demos, and make sure you have all your contact info on there. If they like it, they will contact you. If they don't, simply put--you usually won't hear from them. You can always follow up if you want by dropping an email or giving a call (a couple wks after you send it in), but don't harrass. You'll get even less of an answer that way. Good luck.
  2. I was just gonna say...I think those incidents HAD NOTHING TO DO with your race...people just tend to suck in NY. There's a lot of assholes in this great city of ours...just suck it up and tell them off when needed, all you can do really. As the white girl above said (hehe), next time, assuming the person doesn't seem like a raving lunatic, fight back.
  3. Just remember this...if you get the girls to dance, eventually the guys will have to dance if they want to be with the girls (and they will once they are drunk enough regardless of the music). So making the girls happy first is the way to do it anyway
  4. Poor souls, those people. They wouldn't know good music if it hit them in the face. Yeah they're too young to appreciate any real old disco and r+b...that won't work with them. The oldest you can go hip hop/r+b wise is early 90's. Anything before that will get a no dancing...or no "f##$@" dance floor as you put it. Hehe. Good luck in any case.
  5. These type of people unfortunately will never want to be schooled on music. Best way to do things is to start off mellower and slower in the beginning of the nite and wait to drop the bombs (or in your case the more popular top 40/hip pop tracks) at around 12:30 and on. Use big tracks from back in the day as well as the newer stuff (this goes for regaton/dancehall and hip hop). You don't have to play all recent stuff as long as they are tracks they'll get excited about (like Fatman Scoop for instance or Murder She Wrote). I have a feeling the ppl you play for don't care about house or that kind of dance music unless it's an R+B house remix or something (which can work great in between to break it up a bit). I myself am a house DJ but am forced to sometimes play for ignorant crowds such as this...that formula seems to work. Also that crowd never minds repeating of songs which KILLS me, but if you need to fill up towards the end of your set, that's probably what you'll have to do. 3 hrs is not a long set at all, so if you still don't have a lot to work with in that time, I suggest trying to expand your record collection on all fronts so you do have enough to work with.
  6. Roger is going to be at Crobar, this saturday. Since you like him, I would suggest trying that over Spirit with JP.
  7. btw the all this time track is a WOMAN not a guy
  8. that sucks sooo much. to have all that hard work dissapear...I mean I can't even imagine how she feels right now...
  9. I must also add The Cars, Talk Talk, Missing Persons, Thomas Dolby, Flock of Seagulls...and even Duran Duran can be considered New Wave to some extent. Btw Yaz is one of my fave bands EVER...check out the whole album of Upstairs at Eric's...was soo ahead of it's time. Also random tidbit of music info: original keyboardist to DM (a la Just Can't Get Enough), quit DM then formed Yaz, then headed over to form Erasure. That's why all those bands (Well, DM in their early yrs anyway) have a similar sound .
  10. great freaking record. don't even mind the dub...check the vocal mixes (orig, stereo).
  11. Soul Central-Strings of Life (Mark Knight) [Defected] A Studio-SOS (Skylark remix) Armand Van Helden-My My My [Tommyboy] Shapeshifters-Lola's Theme (various mixes and mash ups) [ultra] Michael Grey-The Weekend [Eye Industries] Janet Jackson-All Nite (Don't Stop) (LES Mix) [Virgin] Narcotic Thrust-I Like It (M Black) [Yoshitoshi] Agreed, this M black is pretty sweet... Mirabeau-Back from Outta Space [Motivo, Italy] Granite and Phunk-Knock You Over [Toolroom UK] and a toss between Phase 2-Voodoo Love (Lee Cabrera Mix) and Havana Funk-Bakiri Ban [Defected] Honorable mention to Eric Prydz-Call on Me [MOS]
  12. I think Eminem wants to kill himself now LOL NOBODY LISTENS TO TECHNOOOOO
  13. OK. First off the original mix (which KTU is playing) was produced by Jack Elliot not Tony Moran. Tony has done remixes for it, as well as Giuseppe D. The single will be released at the end of June. Second, Orange Factory is NOT producing the whole album. So far they only have one track on there...and actually it's not EVEN orange Factory, rather LIV (which consists of only one of the guys in Orange Factory). As for it being on KTU and already going to shit, where else did you want it to get played? I know the clubs are important and they will be playing this too, but as far as radio goes, they broke Reina's No One's Gonna Change You as well. It's very commercial so not shocking that they are playing it.
  14. Not the same person. Your friend is wrong.
  15. Actually from what I hear Prague is supposed to be beautiful and has become the hot spot to go in europe. Supposedly pretty cheap, and great night life. Couldn't tell you where to go though.

Second song is def. a new remix (couldn't tell u which one) of the new Madonna single "Nothing Fails." Third one sounds famil, still thinking about that one...
  23. First off, I think the David Guetta vocal is really catchy...maybe the original vers. is cheese but Wally Lopez did a great job with it I think. If you're not feeling the vocal, check out the instrumental on the b side of the record--the track itself is dope and you might feel differently. And I agree with what everyone has said so far...generalizing that NY peeps only dig "top 40 house" (which incidentally doesn't exist, cuz if it did, we would see top 40 stations playing that shit, and they def. do not) is a really bad assumption. Yes NY'ers like anthems and things of that nature, but it isn't the only vibe people are feeling here. I think a lot of people outside of the NY area have the same notion as you, and it's just not true at all. And as for the more commercial NY dj's (i.e-Johhny Vicious), listening to one of his mix cd's is VERY different from hearing him live...and this goes for most DJ's who decide to hop on the mixed compilation cd bandwagon. As Mike said, he's obligated to put certain tracks on due to label pressure...plus if they don't put tracks that ppl know on these things they don't sell enough to make any profit. And also you are right...just because something is popular does not mean that it's quality. We have been shown this many times already within the past 5 yrs. of looking at the charts...but I don't think everyone here is just riding on the commercial train that you speak of.
