You don't need a degree to get the NASM CPT certification, but you will need it for their upper level verts, like Performance Enhancement Specialist. Prepare to unlearn a lot of the gym myths you learned previously, because as previously stated, it's very clinical. ACE only offers certification exams 4 times a year, the next one is in May. It's widely recognized worldwide, but not as renowned as it used to be. Go with either NASM or NSCA for the CPT exams (Certified personal trainer). in my experience, they're the certs that most reputable gym companies (Equinox, NY Health & Raquet, Sports Clubs LA, 24HR Fitness) look for.
