  1. yes...it's definitely time for that to change. IMO the problem all along has been the lack of interest in "dance" music around here. So far it's been ruled by live bands and more experimental electronic music like IDM. what i have witnessed firsthand with my experience with level x is that they like to segregate the "hip" (i.e. artists, writers, musicians) from the "unhip" (i.e. people who were born here, polish, puerto ricans...the locals). The owners there are not easy to deal with and they don't really like our kind. They prefer the "hip" clientelle to keep the trendy factor high. It's sad, but true. And yet, when I used to spin the occasional sets for the monthly Record Camp parties, I'd promote it heavily and lots of people would show up (both the hip and unhip) and I'd throw down tech house or tribal or progressive and you know what...everyone loved it. and danced. and spent $$$ all night. So it's possible that level x has some promise..we'll see. my final word on the ultrahipness of WB is that it's over. Sure you'll always have your artists and musicians somehow managing to live in overpriced lofts, but with the dotcom bust and so many people out of jobs, lots of folks are moving back to Ohio or Wisconsin or wherever they came from. There's just a different look to the hood now...just...emptier. And this tells me it's ripe for the picking. We shouldn't let the area regress to what it was 20 years ago...
  2. Basically we need to approach the local spots, talk to the owners, hand them a few demos, and promise them we'll be able to fill their places with partying people that will *pay* to drink all night. A few spots I can think of, off the top of my head (granted, it's 8am and i just got home from vinyl so this list may be short): clubs- europa (meserole ave) and exit (greenpoint ave). Don't laugh. These places are PACKED every night they are open and the music SUCKS. Luxx (Grand St) - never been there bars/lounges- BQE (N 6th & Meeker Ave) - new, never been there N 6 (N 6th betw. Whythe Ave & Kent Ave) - ditto Level X (N 6th betw. Berry St & Whythe Ave) - nice small space, fantastic sound system Galapagos (N 6th betw. Whythe Ave & Kent Ave) - huge space, 2 rooms, very popular Pete's Candy Store (Lorimer St) - never saw DJs there, but there's a decent space there please feel free to add to the list...there's lots of info to be found at http://www.freewilliamsburg.com
  3. Airfare...jetBlue (the BEST airline) Hotel...booked even got a car too... awww yeah
  4. ...or anyone who hangs out here. This also goes for those of you in LIC and Astoria.... I'm trying to bring some of the CP vibe to the very fertile (and notoriously ultrahip) area of Williamsburg, more accurately the "Northside" area between Metropolitan Avenue and N 12 St (between the BQE and Kent Ave.), near the conveniently located L train on Bedford Avenue. As you know this area is literally 3 minutes out of Manhattan, and it's overflowing with various types of bars, lounges, and other music venues. In addition there are countless warehouses and other places where events may be held. What we're severely lacking is any type of dance music scene, and by that I mean places of any shape or size where we can hear (and/or dance to) the type of music CPers know and love. There are a few places, such as Luxx on Grand Street and Level X on N 6th Street, but the music selection seems to be spotty and the promotion of these places is unreliable at best. So now I'm on a mission to bring some of the fun to this part of Brooklyn. If you have any ideas or would like to offer assistance in anyway, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking possibly start small with open TT nights etc. and then work our way up from there. I've found that if there is a good party, the people of CP will be there. Strength in numbers, ya know? Please contact me if you're interested... Cheers, - mike c aka brooklynkid
  5. this is true...it wasn't fun to walk around here in 1980.... Now if only I didn't feel like such an "outsider" in my own hood, like at the bars and stuff. I'll have to try to change that... I am calling for more CP parties in 11211
  6. nice! i used to spin there all the time. We should all go check it out, and show the hipsters of Williamsburg that they aren't alone. can you tell i'm bitter that my hood has been overrun?
