  1. Im going out with a few friends this Sat. and I know that the Shelter party has a great vibe. Its moved downtown but is that still a good party? And if not can anyone give me any reccomendations for the 21st for good music and a great vibe. Thanks
  2. Not to rain on anyones parade - i would love to go to this - but I cant justify going because how can it be any fun if you cant move?
  3. I think your friend at work may not be paying taxes. Because there is definietly state tax in NJ if you live there and Im almost 100% you have to pay NY, NYC and NJ tax if you live in NJ and work in the city.
  4. I think its just the opposite. You have to pay New Jersey and New York state taxes along with city taxes if you live in Jersey and work in the city.
  5. you might want to check out Astoria, Queens which is a couple stops away from Manhattan and if you really want a good price check out Jersey City (Grove Street or Journal Square) thats relatively close to Manhattan (15-20 minute ride into Manhattan on path) check it out. I think you might find Brooklyn to be a little pricey for the better neighborhoods.
  6. The reason why Im asking this is I dont go out much and when I do its for a bigger name dj where I know Im going to like the music - like a Timo Maas or a PVD this weekend. But when I go to see a lot of these big DJs it gets so crowded I cant even dance (which is the main reason I go). Then the next day I read the reviews and everbody says how much they loved it. So I was wondering how do people have a good time at a place like this? I find it very annoying getting bumped into every other beat and not being able to move.
  7. Hey - Im on vacation and am looking for a good club in South Beach on Thurs. Looking for somewhere with different rooms and cool vibe. Thanks.
  8. Hey Ive been in the restaurant industry for 15 years and on one hand, yes bartending school is not what it is cracked up to be as far as job placement. For every 25 servers there are 2 bartenders. However, I did go to bartending school and it does get you comfortable with the drinks and the basic techniques. The number one best thing you can do is know somebody in the business, the second best thing you can do is being willing to start off as a barback as they do a lot of grunt work but make decent cash and sometimes get to bartend a little. So like I said if your going to learn technique then by all means go, but if that schools boasts a strong job placement then they are full of shit. Probably your best way to get started bartending is to bartend as a caterer in the city. Its not too hard aka vodka/tonics, wine pours, cosmos, martinis, etc. Good luck.
  9. I remember seeing him for the first time in '99 and I thought he was amazing saw him a few more times and thought some nights were good and some bad and then it seems he just went to shit and I couldnt stand him anymore. I was wondering if I just got too old for him, or if he just became crappy and maybe the drugs got to him. Like the people who always bash him did you like him at first and then become like me?
  10. Never heard this song, but hear it's amazing....does anyone know where I can listen to it other than going to see Danny T. spin?
  11. this is the local union - you dont screw over millions of people for leverage purposes - there are certain public servants that really cant strike and this is one of them - shame on them - they are ruining peoples lives for their cause.
  12. Hi everybody. I just got a full time job as a job recruiter M-F 9-6 but unfortunately I am only getting paid $10/hour. I need another $200 a week. Waiting tables is a last resort. I also used to bartend but getting home at 5AM doesnt work for me. I do catering but we are hitting the dead season. I also used to ride a bike taxi which would be ideal but I messed up my back. Im running out of ideas so if anyone could give me any reccomendations I would appreciate it.
  13. There are two place in Jersey City that are relatively nice - one is where you mentioned and the other is the Pavonia Newport station even though I dont like it there because other than the water it has no personality all the buildings are cookie cutter - very corporate. I actually saw an article in Mens Health that ranked Jersey City as one of the top 5 happiest places in America. I almost choked. Other than those two places the rest of Jersey City has a long way to go...and I mean a long way.
  14. I will go by process of elimination: Staten Island - As I used to call it Garbage Island. I worked by the Staten Island Mall which is by one of two 'manmade' things you can see from outer space - The Staten Island Dump - it reaks just like Garbage Island. Brooklyn - Why does everybody who comes from Brooklyn have to continously tell me they are from Brooklyn as if they have no other identity like an inner city kid who brags about being shot or going to prison. Brooklyn may be cool but the arrogance definitely annoys me. Bronx - LOL Manhattan - I love everything about Manhattan except the people who have the nerve to call everybody not from their the 'Bridge and Tunnel crowd'. When in reality they are from the 'I am hip because Ive been living in the big bad city for 5 years' crowd or the 'daddy's trust fund' crowd. Seriously these people should just take up residence at one of the clubs in the Meatpacking District and leave the rest of us alone. And the winner is....QUEENS - No arrogance, affordable, DIVERSE, and cool. By the way I live in Jersey City which is like living in Beruit in the early '80s. Ok so all people not from Queens begin the attack now...I'm ready!!!!!!!!
  15. Dude I was seriously going to mention the Asian issue but I just decided to leave it alone for some reason. Half the people who bumped into me were the lost Asian crowd. Does anybody know these people...seriously they seem to just walk back and forth like they are lost. A lot of them do seem older, but I see other people who are older and I have no problem with them, in fact I think its awesome when I see an older person enjoying the same music as me and dancing. But this Asian thing has got to be adressed. If you do know these people please talk to them or set up a meeting with them. I dont even know what I would say to them other than to ask them nicely not to go out to clubs anymore, or at least the clubs Im going to that night. I really am sorry to all the Asian people out there who this does not relate to because it seems like Im singling out a group but I dont want it to be that way. It is more of a sub-group of Asians not all. But if you do know them maybe I could do some fundraising and just pay them to stay home.
  16. I couldnt agree more. Way too packed for me and I wasnt even at Crobar the last time. It's not worth it to me to be bumped into every 30 seconds and not be able to dance. I dont mind paying that much mone to hear quality like both Serge and Tiesto produced but Im 31 and I guess Im kind of too old to be bumped into that much. I ended up leaving at 2 or so.
  17. You must work for New York Bartending School. She says she is already a certified bartender which places laugh at if you go to them with that. You don't need to be certified to be a bartender, you need experience...you're not a doctor! If you know how to make drinks you know how to make drinks. She says she's moving back to NYC which means she knows how to deal with people in this area. She is a cute girl, which people in the biz know is the most important thing if you have an idea of what you're doing... she will probably be OK getting hired. Just as everybody in the biz knows that bartending school is a joke. Why you are steering her to bartending school to throw money away. If she said she had no experience, ok maybe bartending school but it makes no sense for her to go. And like I said the summer is the busy season for catering...the private ones pay up to $25 plus tips....a good one to start with is Premier Party Servers they pay $16/hour and their number is 212-499-0886. Good luck sweetie. And by the way go to extremebartending.com or extremebartender.com (cant remember which) to see what people say about bartending. And oh yeah if you know someone that is the best way in PMing that guy Stymie may be your best bet.
  18. no way on the bartending school. Its a waste of money if you know what your doing already. They do give you leads but you would be better off just going from place to place on your own. If you want to work right away you might want to try some catering places.
  19. I've been to Avalon 3 or 4 times and I felt the Asian factor has been overwhelming. Now let me first say I try not to be prejudice (even though this totally comes off as it) and that this in no way applies to all Asians (because this is only a particular group I'm talking of). The Asian Factor is hundred of Asians who seem to be at a club for the first time and popped like 6 pills apiece. They just sit there and bob their heads - no rhythem. On top of that half of them are like 45 or above and you just look at them and your like this is horrible. It totally kills the vibe of a club and at Avalon when Ive been there no matter how the music is the vibe is just horrible. I can deal with guidos, 18 year olds, gangstas because at least they have energy. The Asians just seem to use a Harry Potter term, dementors -they just suck the energy from a club.
  20. It was actually the first time I ever heard DT and while hearing him I said to myself this this is the first DJ I heard who actually earns his money. He seemed a little sloppy and inconsistent but when he was on wow he was crazy. sorry I missed him at ARC.
  21. Speaking of venues only I think Crobar is the worst. Dont get me wrong they pull a lot of talent but it's like the pretty boy of clubs. Maybe they should just throw it in the Meatpacking district. It just doesn't have an edge to it like Shelter, Spirit, and even Avalon (even though that crowd makes me sick).
