  3. saturday, september 4th, 2004 x'ess entertainment, chicagogroove.com & bigwig nightclub present... THE CLOSING PARTY! "Big Wig has long been an institution in Chicago, but it's time to say good-bye. After 7 years of bringing you the hottest DJs in the Chicagoland area, it's time for Big Wig to close its doors." featuring.... DIZ If life is about "being in the right place at the right time," then Diz’s timing could not have been better. Born and raised in Chicago, the original epicenter of the House Music universe, Diz’s adolescence coincided with the beginnings of that city’s legendary scene. He was 14 when his older brother took him to The Music Box in 1985. That night, the course of his life was altered when he witnessed the potential of music: to control emotions and lead people on a collective journey. He’s been striving to do just that ever since, and in the process has become a faithful participant in the music, the culture, and the times. JUSTIN LONG Justin Long has the Chicago vibe running through his veins. He started his young DJing career at the age of 15 and in the past 13 years Justin has accomplished more than most could even imagine in the house music industry. As a DJ his sets are electric ranging from thick tech-house to a deeper soulful sound; all performed with an energy behind the turntables that in itself is Justin Long.As one of the founding residents on q101 Sonic Boom fm with his thumping Saturday night radio show with 71,000 listeners. As a producer he has recorded for and with many of the top labels and producers. Labels such as G Swing, Greens Keepers, Igloo, Peaches and Music For Freaks have sought his music. Some of his most prolific productions have come form his collaborations with Dan X under the moniker of No Assembly Required. This powerful duo has turned heads as far away as Asia and Europe. DAYHOTA DJ Dayhota (Shannon Lalongo) began her career spinning at the infamous 2418 North Ave. parties in Chicago’s artsy Wicker Park/Bucktown community in 1995. Through this outlet, she was able to cut her teeth in front of the city’s elite while showcasing her energetic style. During the same period, Dayhota came in contact with Colette, and the two, along with Heather and Lady D, formed the first all-female DJ collective SuperJane. Feeling that there were no real opportunities for female DJ’s in the industry at the time, the women took it upon themselves to create those needed opportunities so that other women could soon follow. Their impression on the House Music industry can only be described as tremendous both in Chicago and abroad. LADY D There is nothing this DJ/Producer/Mother and now record label Founder and C.O.O can't do. Also a founding member of the world famous DJ team, SuperJane, Lady D has traveled the world spreading the gospel of house. Her amazing record selection and surgeon-like skills behind the decks make her a crowd favorite, and one of the most sought after DJ's in the business. As Chicago's first lady of House, Lady D has been rocking clubs from Milwaukee to Moscow since 1995. Her style of past, present and future house® offers something for heads and new jacks alike. Influenced by legends and encouraged by veterans in the scene, Lady D works the tables with knowledge and experience. Creatively and skillfully blending House, Techno, Latin, Disco, Electro and more, Lady D feels it so you feel it. From her successful mixed CD "Naked Kaleidoscope" (AfterHours) Lady D became a household name domestically and abroad. Lady D is a female phenom who DJ’s produces, vocalizes and proudly launches her own music company, D’lectable Music. FRANK SOLANO Househead since day one. Frank may be new to the scene, but not new to the sound. Growing up listening to house music, and watching it evolve to what it is today. He is still in the game spreading the word! Gotta Have House! DAVID O i have always had much love for chicago, which leads to our site chicagogroove.com and the start of david.o...What can i say. i love to play HOUSE music. from this love i have confined myself to one rule...if it is not fun, do not involve yourself in it. my style is 90's; with the long blends, tracks with deep basslines and soulful vocals. i have always prided myself in playing records that are not a sign of the time, rather a sign of my feelings. i have been influenced by great chicago talent from the likes of derrick carter, diz, andre harris, mark grant, rick garcia, lego, and many other locals. i have also been lucky enough to play with all of these djs and have learned, and continue to learn. thank you all. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guest list rules: $5 ALL NIGHT!! As the newest addtion to the X'Ess family, Andy looks forward to the future of the Chicago House scene through optimistic eyes and hopes to do everything he can to keep it alive and well. 7. friday, august 20th, 2004 x'ess entertainment and zentra nightclub present: Sweet & Lowdown Reunion Party Farley Jackmaster Funk When a new style of music first cracks the pop charts, the hit is usually a deliberate crossover by an artist having little to do with the music's original pioneers. The first house single to reach the charts, however, was recorded by seminal Chicago DJ and producer, Farley Jackmaster Funk. His cover of Isaac Hayes' "Love Can't Turn Around" made the Top Ten in mid-1986 -- ironically, not in his home country but in the U.K. -- at the same time that he was one of the biggest names in Chicago house. Born in 1962, Farley began DJing while still a teenager. He first made his name in 1981, broadcasting on Chicago's WBMX-FM with Ralphi "The Razz" Rosario, Kenny "Jammin" Jason, Mickey "Mixin" Oliver and Scott "Smokin" Seals as the Hot Mix 5 -- the legendary DJ team which broke house music for a wider Chicago audience. Farley also appeared at the legendary Warehouse club (mixing alongside Frankie Knuckles) and then began a residency at the Playground (later the Candy Store) which set in stone his reputation as one of the city's top DJs. Fast Eddie - LIVE! DJ Fast Eddie needs no introduction. At least, not for anyone who has tracked house music since the mid-'80s. He is as integral to the house movement as Marshall Jefferson, Todd Terry, and Kevin Saunderson. Why? In the early '90s, in the wake of acid-house, Eddie and his Chicago counterparts pioneered a new musical genre they coined hip-house. By fusing house tempo beats with old-skool hip hop percussion and rhyming, Eddie set the standard for this new genre, challenged only by Doug Lazy and Tyree Cooper. With that in mind, you might be surprised to hear Eddie's essentially deep, moving house for Real Estate. "Encore" and "Solar Soundscape," both taken from Future House Society Vol. 2, fuse acidic synths with deeper house grooves. A million miles from "Yo Yo Get Funky," "The Whop," "Jack To The Sound," and "Hip House," but not quite so far from "Acid Thunder." DJ Jes Jes keeps himself and fresca recordings involved in the cultural arts in Chicago by performing at several events for local nonprofit associations. Since the proiekt's inception, Jes has been an integral part of the musical aspects of these events bringing art and music together to create unique environments to propel the artistic aspect of our digital culture, many sound breaking events have taken place through the Conjugate Project including, Motionness: the Chicago El Train Event, Resonance Part One: An Afternoon of Audial Stimulation in Grant Park, and the original Conjugate Project which inspired us all to continue this artistic endeavor. Paul Anthony With hard work and determination, Paul has become a staple in the Midwest elctronic music scene. In the year 2k Paul headlined many major events and one club event in particular where RaveWorld.net was filming the "PitchBlack" tour night in Chicago . Paul was filmed that night playing along side deejays such as Carl Cox, Gene Ferris, Doc Martin, Nigel Richards you can see this all on the dvd version of "Pitchblack." The attention had continued to grow into 2001 as Paul Anthony was feature in Underground Construction's "Four X's Harder" mix compilation. The cd was available across the nation and gave Paul more exposure throughout the electronic music scene. 8. saturday, august 14th, 2004 X’ESS Entertainment, Big Wig Nightclub and Friends cordially invite you for your support at a Fundraiser being held for: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Saturday, August 14th, 2004 at Big Wig Nightclub featuring: Wally Callerio Wally Callerio is not a musician. He believes that calling himself one would lower the standard of the word and its meaning. This seemingly noble and refreshing statement is, in truth, indicative of his personality. Wally is, however, a DJ and a producer whose foundation is built on the feeling of house music, rather than its use as an accessory in an industry of cool. Citing the honorable influences of Derrick Carter and Mark Farina, Wally's style can be classified by chunky beats and deep bass lines; regular eerie goodness. The vocals and melodies border perfection; driving funk laced with percussion and brass composes his very true form of dance music. In the same fashion as deep house, Wally possesses an intrinsic sense of musical integrity, which has fortunately spilled outward to invade his production outlets. His reputation as a producer has opened up a completely new world in relation to his double-sided career. He has not solicited himself or sold his products door to door; the devil does not hold his soul because it remains safely encased in his music. Recently, Wally has signed on with DJ Sneak's Toronto-based management company, All World Entertainment. Piling this on top of his flourishing production roster and hectic DJ schedule, it is predicted that he will begin to pursue more opportunities abroad. 11. friday, august 6th, 2004 x'ess entertainment and zentra nightclub present: Sweet & Lowdown Johnny Fiasco Unlike most of his colleagues, Johnny Fiasco's musical background lies in rock & roll. Before turning his energies to house productions and DJing, Chicago native Johnny Fiasco (whose real last name was Lopez) started his musical escapade playing the guitar. Where most house producers draw their influence from disco and funk greats, Fiasco turns to the Police, Talking Heads, Rush, and Herbie Hancock. Fiasco's first production was for Trax Records on the track called "Zig Zag." His sophomore EP was the "Progretto Fiasco" release, which unleashed him into the big time production circles. In time, Fiasco made his way to the acclaimed Chicago house label, Cajual Records, started by the legendary Cajmere. The reputation of Cajual, and his work for the label, launched Fiasco into a catalog of singles and recordings for other labels. In April of 2000, Fiasco released his first full length mix CD, Cluster, on Afterhours. Unfortunately, the man who asked Fiasco to do the album, Andy Adams (head of Afterhours), died shortly after the request, and the album was quickly turned into a tribute album to the label runner. Jason Jinx You can't make music if you don't love it. And you can't make great dance music if you don't love to dance. Even now, with a well established DJ, production and remix career that keeps Jason Jinx more than busy, you'll still see him out, taking in new music and working the dance floor just like he would back in the day as a teen. Back then in the late eighties / early nineties New York City was a melting pot of various clicks and scenes: industrial, techno, rave, hip-hop, house Kids from all over: Brooklyn, NYC, Queens, Long Island they were all getting down. Jinx was one of them, and in 1991 at 19 years old the beginning of his DJ career was a natural extension of that partying experience. Jinx' first DJ residency was for a night called NASA at the Shelter, NY. He also went on to residencies at the Tunnel, Limelight and The Loft. Early on Jinx uncovered the break-beat sound that was coming out of the UK, and while at NASA one of his two sets a night would be drum and bass - the other, house. Jinx was the only New York DJ spinning full drum and bass sets at the time and he soon gained the respect and support of UK labels and producers. Some of his first forays into production (released on Sm:)e Communications) were drum and bass tracks, as well as house. Although now when DJing, Jason's sets are purely house music and his productions are house too, his openness when it comes to new music speaks through those productions. Admitting he's 'not a purist' when it comes to sounds and equipment - for Jinx the important thing is to 'be innovative, use what's available, take the technology we have - computers, digital audio - and use it to the fullest, creatively.' That creativity extends beyond engineering, production and mixing - all of which Jinx does himself - he will also pick up the bass, guitar or keys to augment his work. Over 60 singles and remixes have come out of Jinx' studio for labels like Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Groove On, Moody, Subversive, Ovum, and King Street to name a few. Recently a huge dance floor buzz picked out the track 'Your First Time' on Fluential Records. And under the moniker Joystick, Jinx has made a lot of noise on the Yoshitoshi label with cuts like 'Go Insane', 'Spinnin Around', and the 'Chelate Ep', as well as his remixes of Eddie Amador's 'Rise', Mysterious People's 'Fly Away', and PQM's 'The Flying Song'. Creating tracks as a DJ crafts a set, Jinx plays with dynamics that build and build on the dance floor. It's a warm sound, but built around hard, supremely danceable beats - like 'When You Know You're There' on Subliminal Records, which has been making waves in clubs both sides of the Atlantic. Whether producing an original track, remixing someone else's or DJing to a packed floor, Jason Jinx has an instinctive feel for what is fun, and what the dance floor will respond to. It's that love for music - and for house music in particular that makes his productions work and keeps the faithful returning to the floor. 12. saturday, july 31st, 2004 X'ESS Entertainment & Bigwig Nightclub present: Hot & Spicy @ Bigwig featuring: Rithma After only minimal interactions with the man called Rithma, it is obvious that he is one of the few free spirits remaining in dance music today. His silly yet mature persona enables him to enjoy life, love people and remain content while quietly taking house music to the next level. He clearly falls slightly left of the center, not only in his presentation of records as a DJ, but perhaps more prominently, in his efforts as a producer. Incorporating the psychedelic elements of his self-proclaimed second home of San Francisco with organic instrumentals and his own down-to-earth vocals, time and again he achieves a unique balance of dance floor concoction and pure listening pleasure. His upcoming full-length effort, Music Fiction, surpasses all of his projects to date. “Fiction is the idea of creating imaginary things,†Rithma says. “I suppose music is that in the first place, but I really tried to make this album a whole story as one piece rather than just a bunch of tracks.†The intermingling of brief instrumental compositions with atypical house, varying electronic grooves and an undercurrent of funk and melody mesh fluidly together painting a picture of rare sonic beauty; it is apparent that Rithma is musically wise beyond his years. 17. friday, july 23rd, 2004 x'ess entertainment and zentra nightclub present: Sweet & Lowdown featuring: DJ Yousef Originally spotted by Muzik Magazine through their famous Bedroom Bedlam competition * Yousef has been smashing dance floors every since. He was soon sited as one to watch by Muzik for 1999 * and Renaissance invited him to play in Ibiza.A representative for the Ministry of Sound heard him and signed him to Ministry of Sound Management on the spot. From a young lad he followed the dance scene * catching some of Carl Cox¹s and Prodigy¹s first rave sets that inspired him to get involved as much as he could.Once signed by Ministry of Sound he became a regular at both their Friday and Saturday night proving to all his versatility of style. He also became a regular at the award winning Media venue in Nottingham with Renaissance. The year took a turn for Yousef as Ministry of Sound Management closed * and he was signed by Erick Morillo¹s manager * and won Best Bedroom Bedlam DJ @ the 1999 Muzik Awards * so things were getting better and better. As 2000 kicked in, a residency at Cream with a room of his own began. As a native Liverpudlian it was a home coming pop stars dream about, and the residency began * providing an antidote of US / UK house music as the main roomed heaved with the trance craze. As the year progressed the fan base just grew and grew and so did the list of guests requesting a set there. Before the year was out * everyone from X-Press 2, Erick Morillo, Darren Emerson to rare first UK performances of people like Onionz and Joeski were playing and supporting the room and the man behind it. Yousef also went on stage at Creamfields England in front of 20 000 people and wowed the crowds, smashed Space and Pacha in Ibiza and his reputation grew which was crowned by delivering a hot mix for Pete Tong in December as one of the Stars of 2000 series, one of only four DJs to do so. Chris Santiago Chris has quickly established a devoted following in Chicago through his residencies at Zentra & Bigwig residencies in a few short years. He's played and rocked it with some of the biggest heavyweights in the industry including Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope, and Heather to name a few. His growing reputation in blending styles of smooth melodic deep house to hard hitting percussive techno is earning him a reputation of "knowing how to get the party started." 20. friday, july 2nd, 2004 x'ess entertainment and zentra nightclub present: FIRECRACKER 3 featuring: Diz If life is about "being in the right place at the right time," then Diz’s timing could not have been better. Lego Drawing from a wide spectrum of musical tastes, Rafael ³Légo² Rodriguez shows that he is not limited on the turntables or in the studio. He has 3 remixes that made it on the Billboard Dance Chart. This year he will be celebrating his 10-year anniversary at Red Dog and is currently working on remixes for TLC and Whitney Houston. Janel Roland Born to a Korean mother and Caucasian father, Janel had a diverse cultural upbringing. Her passion for music goes back to her early childhood years of learning the piano, singing in the choir and playing the clarinet. Her talent continued to grow while she studied music intensely in school and through private classical training. She received many prestigious awards for her achievements in classical clarinet and voice. After experiencing DJ culture in clubs and raves in Chicago and Saint Louis, Janel decided to express her creativity through the sounds of House music. While in college she took her vocal skills to the next level by gaining the ability to ad lib and scat sing in jazz voice. In 1999, she grew an interest in mixing and began to purchase records and learn mixing techniques. With a naturally gifted ear for music, Janel developed her skills as a DJ in a very short time.
