BROOKLYN BASS SERIES: 01 Saturday - May 28, 2005 DJ QUEST Cyberfunk, Rat Records, Pulse Records - UK Hailing from West London, DJ Quest is a name synonymous with Breakbeat/Nu Skool. Since 1994 at 15 years of age Quest found the turntable. However his production career never really started until the garage explosion in 1997/98. Due to his love for Drum and Bass he could never understand the heavy vocal lead garage sound that was fast taking over as the dominant scene in London. His frustration at hearing garage tunes with weak basslines and snares that sounded like hi hats prompted him to make a tune at a garage tempo that had a more heavier lean onto Drum and bass but still retaining the funk and soul that garage seemed to have the upper hand on the time. Starting off with his first label, Pulse Recordings, it was him and his brother who were making tunes and through not thinking any one would like their stuff they played it to a few friends who DJed in the local garage clubs, and who subsequently liked their tunes and cut them and found to be that the ravers really liked it. From this, they thought 'what the hell' and started up their own label. With early tracks such as Rumble, Warship and Egypt (produced with MC Ken Mac) receiving a diversity of support from people like EZ through to Tayo through to Hybrid, DJ Quest's vision of this new sound was starting to finally be realised and alongside like minded producers at the time like Deekline, Stanton Warriors, Zinc etc this new sound was fast becoming popular not just in London but around the world. Following on from his pulse releases, Quest also released classics on labels like Rat Records such as "Old Skool" (produced with kalibre and following on from that have been most notably his album on Rat Records entitled Rat Sessions Vol 1), He also has come to record for some of the most popular and respected labels in the business including Mechanoise, Supercharged, Botchitand Scarper, hardcore beats, cyberfunk, funkatech, wireframe, pulse, sinewave the list is endless. His main project, his label Cyberfunk is one of the biggest in the breaks scene. Responsible for numerous anthems it has also made some of the stars that the scene has come to love such as Mutiny, Breakfastaz, Odissi, Baobinga and MC Ken Mac. And if running a label wasn't enough, he is involved in a partner in one of London's biggest bi weekly events "breaks and mortar". This night has become one of the most in places in the Uk to hear all the latest music in the breaks scene...On top of the label / DJing and the club night, he is also involved in one of the biggest information centre's for breakbeat... www.breakbeatworldwide.com since its nception back in August 2004 has proven to be the main place for anything breaks related including the latest dubs, news etc from all the key scene playas. MADAME MERCURY Mad Wax, Streetbeat, NYC Breaks - SF/NYC Madame Mercury has been involved in the San Francisco underground dance music scene since 1996. She has a passion for breaks and has been supporting them since her professional debut. Madame Mercury discovered her love for funky break beats and electro dancing at the raves of the mid 1990’s admiring the likes of DJ Dan, Simply Jeff, DJ Voodoo, Uberzone and Icey as well as San Francisco’s own local underground breaks DJs. She took this admiration and taught herself how to spin as well as coordinating with her Liquid Mercury group to produce events focusing on the breakbeat sound. After almost 10 years holdin’ it down as one of the premier breakbeat DJs in San Francisco - playing along side some of the same artists that inspired her in the very beginning - Miss Mercury is now a local resident to New York City, and is set to unleash her sound on the Big Apple. 13. WAVEWHORE - "Breakin' The Law" ELECTROFLY RECORDS - ELECTRO018 A. Original Mix AA. 40,000 Watts Remix Distribution: InterGroove UK Ltd. www.intergroove.co.uk Release Date: May 2, 2005 Erik Stein, aka Wavewhore, has experimented with audio waveforms and styles of electronic music since the early nineties. His early years were spent playing metal guitar in a host of bar bands which toured the New York City area. In 1991, Well Primed records released 'The Thorazine Stretch Factor', a compilation which featured his first dive into the realm of electronic dance music titled ‘Voodoo’. In 2001, Wavewhore founded Audio Tactics, an audio production house dedicated to styles of electronic music such as breakbeat and contemporary dub. The following year, Wavewhore’s ‘Bulletproof’, a drum and bass track, was featured in a film by Julie Covello titled ‘Prohibited Beatz’ documenting the New York drum and bass scene. As a DJ, Wavewhore can be found delivering high energy breakbeat or chilled out dub sets at various venues in his home base of New York City and he currently maintains a residency called ‘Unbreakable’ at the award winning Sullivan Room in Manhattan. His DJ skills have been featured on numerous radio shows such as BreaksFM and upcoming shows include 92.3 K-Rock FM, Proton Radio and an artist feature on www.BijouBreaks.com. ‘Breakin The Law’ is his first single for Electrofly and takes the label down a more funky dance floor friendly route… jump up beats & bass stylleee! Support from Elite Force, Jay Cunning, The Autobots, Chris Fortier, Jonathan Lisle, Bill Vega & Soto… “A mighty tune!†Elite Force on the 40,000 Watts Remix "I'll try and play it on the radio (my kiss100 show) this week" Tayo "That demo is wicked... All the bulbs that I ever needed to put out - you did it for me. I owe you one… Yeah, Breakin’ The Law is really good shit mate!" Jez of The Autobots "Loving it every time I play it!" Bill Vega “A new release from Electrofly is always welcome; a label who seem to have found themselves in that kind of progressive bracket; the kind of breaks that I imagine Sasha or Digweed might play, but definitely not Mechanoise. They have put out some really interesting releases and occasionally some that have been, how shall we put this, a little ‘light’. Anyway, this is not one of those and is actually one of their most playable, dancefloor friendly releases to date. It’s strangely reminiscent of really good, solid house music from the mid 90’s and brings a warm feeling with it. It’s pretty simple really; a tight little groove which keeps repeating, warm synthy sounds are added to the mix following variations of the same pattern and it just keeps building and subtly changing. The 40,000 watts mix is the one that’s aimed more firmly at the floor. It’s a bit more stripped down but with extra kick and attitude in the bass and drums. Simple but really effective tracks that are instantly accessible. 16. From DJ Waxy Fresh's site: The different genres of dance music are defined mostly by how the drums sound and how fast they are playing. What people remember about popular songs is usually the melody or the lyrics, but in a club it is the drum beat that matters most. 99% of club music is in 4/4 time, meaning there are four beats to a bar. To explain this simply, and a bit wrong, this means that the repetitive elements in the song tend to repeat every 4 beats. For some reason this works with people's brains in a special way. If you listen to a lot of music, you'll realize that the whole world turns in 4/4 time. House music revolves around a kick-drum or bass-drum sound that hits on every beat in 4/4 time, also know as "four on the floor", and it is usually programmed by a drum machine or sequencer. The beat will go kick-kick-kick-kick over and over again. This makes it very easy to dance to, which is why it is so popular in clubs. Almost all the wedding dance standards have 4/4 drum hit (eg. Dancing Queen, Like A Prayer, Billy Jean), although it used to be common to hit the snare instead of the kick-drum on each beat. Breakbeats (often shortened to "breaks") got their start with the original Hip Hop DJ's in The Bronx, such as Grandmaster Flash, Cool Herc, Grandwizard Theodore and Afrika Bambaataa. They took the part of the record they liked the best - the part where the drummer would show off his stuff, known as the "break" - and use two copies of the record and two turntables to extend the break into a whole song. Incidentally, this is also how the word "breakdancing" came about, since they liked to dance hardest while listening to the break. While any drum part can be sampled, breakbeats were usually sampled from funk or rock songs, and they typically have a kick on the 1 and a snare or cymbal hit on the 2 and the 4. The main beat will go kick-snare-nothing-snare (or kick-snare-kick-snare if the producer wants to make it a bit easier to dance). Breakbeats get quite complicated, but if you listen closely you'll hear this pattern almost every time. Modern producers get creative with their drums, and modern equipment means they can chop up the drum sounds and sound like anything a live drummer can play, and more. With very few exceptions, Hip Hop, Breakbeat and Drum'n'Bass music all use breakbeats instead of four on the floor. The other important difference between dance genres is how fast the song is playing, mesured in beats per minute, or BPM. If you nod your head to a Hip Hop record, like Beyonce's Crazy In Love, you notice that you nod your head slowly (99 times per minute to be exact), while a Trance song like Sandstorm by Darude will nod your head a lot faster (136 times per minute). House music is typically 120 to 130 BPM, Trance 130-140 BPM, Hip Hop is usually 90 to 115 BPM, Drum'n'Bass is 160-200 BPM, and Breakbeat music comes in around 125-140 BPM. What does all this mean? It means Breakbeat music is dance music with drums beats that tend to sound like more like funk drummers or rock drummers than the 4/4 base beat in House music. It's not quite as easy to dance to as House, but it is a lot funkier and I think it's more interesting music. Why haven't you heard of Breakbeat music before? In the late 90's "Big Beat" music was the in thing, but this was just a rowdy kind of Breakbeat music. 90% of the songs put out by The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim were Breakbeat songs. Now that Big Beat isn't cool any more, the reason is popularity. Hip Hop, House, Trance and even Drum'n'Bass are all more popular than Breakbeat. This is a travesty that good, honest, hard-working DJ's like myself are trying to correct.
