  1. this is true. Imagine playing at a set and one of the CD players just dies.... if all you have is CD's your fucked. what are you gonna get on the mic and be like..."excuse me, the cd player broke..."
  2. this is why more and more clubs are going the hip hop route.. soon, all clubs will be hip hop, and they will have a small dance room.
  3. Junior Vasuqez is launching his new XM radio broadcast where he will be playing new music, and new remixes.... I dont have XM but will be getting it now.
  4. I have to disagree. when you say talent, what do you mean? When I go out, and if I am going to pay money to go here someone play, what is it, $40 ...$50 to get into a club these days? I am going to pay to go hear Junior Vasquez, or JP, or even Jonny Vicious ...why? because they have talent. what I mean by talent is, they might have cooked something up in the studio that past week and are going to drop it in their set. I can name at least 10 songs from each of these producers that I can still play and would have people who know nothing about EDM dancing.... I for one, am not familiar with steve lawlers production work. I did hear everyone talking about his track "that sound"... and when I listened to it, it was like WTF is this? This doesn't make me want to go here this guy play. Sure as hell doesn't have any uplifting vocals. hell, it doesn't even want to make me dance! All I hear in that song is "listen to sing , listen to my sound" over and over..... where are the vocals? Can I take a date to go out and listen to this?hell no but I can take a girl out and dance with her, and if JP plays I believe in love, there are actual vocals there. It actual has more then 5 words in that song... Junior Vazquez might drop reasons for living, or a remix he did of kiss u all over... what female is not going to like that? I mean, thats just my opinion, and based on my DJing experience, in general, the majority of people out there dont like repetitive music with little or no words....., and alot of the music that europeans produce is repetitive stuff. NY producers on the other hand have a better production style to cater to the people in their own country. for one, I am tempted to go hear hex hector this weekend at pasha, and bring a date, because I know we can have a good time.... just because i know hex production is good and a female whos not into dance music that much might recognize an RNB song turned into a dance track, dance and have a good time. also, instead of all the annoying promotion stickies of come to my club, ect, ect. producers should start posting their production. I would rather hear new talent production from NY, then some cornball promoters flyer saying come to my club. With the internet and digital distribution these days, there is no excuse that you cant get your production heard. because how else are you gonna get your name out there? I could make the next club bomb, and if I gave it to a huge Dj, how the hell would I get any fame? The DJ is getting famous for playing your music, when it should be the other way around. the EDM here in NY is just backwards.
  5. there is also a problem with the way EDM was marketed. For one, half if not all the "super Dj's" from the late 1990's were almost twice as old as the people clubbing. This presents a problem. For example, look at hip hop. Its keep fresh, new. Younger artist coming out, for a younger crowd. biggie was what, 23? so was tupac, same with 50 cent.... after 30 years old, its pretty much down hill. They all move into selling cloths, perfumes or what have you, because the crowd demands something new... the way the EDM marketing is run is backwards. We have the same DJ's DJing from back in the 1990's , some even later then that.... With hardly any new DJs coming out. Nor do we have any NY producers producing any quality tracks anymore. Its plain to see, although the venues you named above make money, that actual genre of EDM is not progressing or moving forward because there is a bottle neck , because its not being kept new and fresh. To be honest, I would rather go here a DJ whos actually makes there own music, then one that just plays music. For example, I dont remember Boris ever producing any tracks when I was clubbing. Erick Morrilo never made anything I liked. Not saying these guys arent talented DJ's, but it just doesnt make any sense to me. The people who actually have done incredible production work, dont even have a real residency.... bad marketing. I do remember Jonathan Peters, Junior Vasquez, Johnny Vicious, and such actually creating EDM tracks defining the era. Right now its kind of stale. It sucks. yeah, the promoters are making the cash, and so is the clubs, but it just sucks right now. At least thats the way I see it. there is no music being made in AMERICA right now defining the era.
  6. I had this convo with a friend who I made a House CD for.... he knows I make hip hop and reggaetoon beats, so he was excited and thought he was getting some new beats... when I told him it was house... he said. "house music, house music is dead" cold harsh comment , but is it far from the truth? the real question is......how did EDM go from being commerically accepted, to being rejected? dare I say, bad promoters? come on now, promoters will get a shit Dj who can "bring in more people" then one whos gonna play better music. That kills the genre. THIS KILLS THE GENRE.... Eric Prydz - Call On Me http://www.internetdj.com/watch_video.php?op=watch&mediaid=15089&feature=1 this is the shit EDM promoters will allow a DJ to play, just because he brings in 50 people, over a DJ whos going to educate people and play all styles.... blame the people throwing the parties, representing YOUR genre....
  7. There are some good responses here. But I just wanted to add something about the comment made that other "up and coming DJ's" dont get respect... for one, these up and coming DJ's gotta step their game up. what I mean by that is, start PRODUCING your OWN music. JP produced ALOT of good music while at factory, classics. He has paid his dues and them some, competed on saturday nights with Junior Vasquez, who probably is one of the greatest DJ's who has ever lived if not the greatest DJ's period. thats huge. are these up and coming DJ's producing ANYTHING? Also, I dont think sexual preference has anything to do with or should have anything to do with someone liking or disliking a house DJ. I am tried of hearing people complain about new talent not shinning, when the new talent arent really creating music. Djing is more then just playing other peoples music, or working a track with an effects box. or playing the newest shit
  8. I like it for it to change during the night.
  9. This is what I figured. But you know something that gets me pissed? I still am a JP fan, and I am 26. I haven't heard him DJ in years, but I haven't been in the club circuit in years. but anyways, for some reason it seems like to me at least the same people always bashing pasha, SF, JP,ect were people who use to listen to him and now maybe grew up or what ever. I mean, its pretty disturbing to me at least that there is so much BS going on these days in the dance circuit and what not. Club hate, DJ hate, even so far a just plain racism because a group of people are out clubbing. I mean, I have been in hip hop circuit for a while, and as bad as a rep that hip hop gets in the media and in general, you never see any real racist shit going on, or black people mad that there are white rappers and such on message boards, or what ever, or if white people go to hip hop concerts. Its pretty disturbing that it happens in EDM, which is suppose to be "universal" .... I am just stating my opinion on what I see today vs when I use more into the dance circuit.
  10. I dont think its keeping it real. first off, alot of people have grown up. I am not the 18-21 year old kid I was who was into "underground" Maybe its because the crowd that pasha is trying to draw is older people, with jobs, to spend money on alcohol? That doesn't mean pasha is selling out and it doesn't mean that the Dj is keeping it real. I really dont like and dont want to do the after hours thing anymore... I cant seem myself coming home or staying in a club until 10 AM or so "waiting for the music to get good" give me a nice place, with an OLDER, WORKING CLASS , drinking crowd, where people have jobs and really just want to hear good music and no drama, and I am there. All this stuff about under ground is stupid.
  11. my thoughts exactly, but still wondering why certain DJ's seem "unpopular" at this moment...
  12. I actually have a live Larry Laven CD I picked up from my job. We were distributing it and while browsing the B2B site for dance music, stumbled across it. I noticed back in 1979 or when ever it was recorded he was doing tricks that I have heard JP and Junior do. And the effects are amazing considering the time frame
  13. or in other words, cut out the promoters and make it a more personal expirence ... I agree!
  14. when I djed in LA back in 2001, all they had was turntables out there.... times have changed, but you might get a gig where its all turntables one day... good to know I have vinyl and can play on vinyl. gives me piece of mind
  15. yeah thanks for bumping this thread, its a good read.
  16. Just wonder, who you think is the most hated or disliked NYC DJ? I find it strange that I am mamking this thread, but it seems when someone mentions the name JP, Pasha, or Sound Factory, it seems to me at least, some kind of displeasure comes arcoss their face. for example, I see alot of "oh no, not another pasha thread" or, fuck pasha, its just the SF with a face lift.... wonder why or what makes it disliked so much.
  17. I know, I was just joking...cute dog BTW.
  18. so what you are saying is, you liked getting your ass grabbed in the dark by strangers.....
  19. If I ran pasha, I would make it 23 or 25 and older to get in. Have a happy hour. Bring in an older crowd. Start the night off with soulful house, as the night gets later, get some tribal and stuff going, and then at like 12-1 am, get some main floor stuff going.. that would be great. I think... if not, your gonna have all these drug addicts ODing and shit. Sound Factory was a legendary club, but also, to be honest, was associated with drugs. Seems like this is more of a drinking crowd. Mixing drinking with stupid underage people, and your looking for trouble... just my 2 cents
  20. this is true, but I heard stories that people were juicing bouncers to cut the line, only to be denied at the door..... thats foul.
  21. yeah, but my point is that these places have underage drinking going on for years and years, and the cops NEVER shut them down. when they go after underage drinking, its an excuse to just shut the place down. I see more nights like this happening at pasha.
  22. its true, but bloomberg has taken it to a new level.... I mean, WTF. clubs cant even have an opening day without being shut down what did he get reelected for another 8 years?
  23. bloomberg has killed the NYC night life.
