I mean come on, try comparing somebody like tiesto, or PVD, or oakenfold to Sven Vath back when he was still eatin a ton of acid and playing these huge marathon trance sets. These kats these days just can't hang - it's all fluff.Oh, and as for the thing somebody said about robert miles. He got his ass sued off for directly stealing other people's music. I hear what you're saying. I know there's quite a few old schoolers who got into Trance ages ago and feel the same way about anything past 96-97. Personally I like a lot of the more melodic, as well as harder Trance. To be honest, Trance used to be pretty confined to this very loopy, acidic sound when it first came out. People seem to forget that even though a lot of good classics came out around that time, there were also plenty of terrible productions being released, and so many copycat records that you couldn't tell one song apart from the rest.I know i'm gonna get flamed for this, but even though Oakie played some traditional early trance and psychedelic stuff in the mid 90s, I'm also glad he played some of his more Euro leaning Trance productions. I mean I really enjoy the kind of music todays producers like Blank & Jones, Armin Van Buuren, or Matt Darey make (which was somewhat pioneered by Paul Van Dyk), and it came from that sound. It was guys like Oakenfold and Sasha who were the first to discover Armin's music, back when they were mainly known for spinning Trance.To some degree I think DJs like Picotto and Marco V. are bringing back the original Trance sound, by combining it with Tech. At the same time, you've got Scot Project for some bangin hard Trance, John 00 Fleming for some Progressive Trance, someone like Ferry corsten for that bigger than life Epic Trance sound (which was influenced by mid 90s Faithless records), or Tiesto who tries to play all styles of Trance along with some Progressive House.
