  1. Actually, Planet Rock and Bam's subsequent projects were more to do with Arthur Baker. Arthur was the driving force behind blending Kratwerk and the underground hip hop movement of the time which in turn led to the birth of "electro" and ultimately hip hop as we know it today (for better or worse). I got the chance to sit down with Bambaataa once and talked about this very subject. He's pretty cool and not what you'd expect (in more ways than one). On the other hand, Arthur Baker got so turned off by "rap artists" and hip hop in general, he moved to the UK and all but retired until fairly recently..
  2. It's not that the area is "scary" or perceived to be dangerous... For me, it's a matter of choosing to immerse myself in positive surroundings. Just walking down that block is a buzzkill with all the MTV copying gansta kids.... Hell, when I was their age, I was more criminal minded and worse behaved, which is even more of a reason why I avoid that BS now.
  3. uuuhhh... Dave Clarke over Timo Maas?? I truly hope I am thinking of the wrong Dave C.... Some of the guys on that list should not be there at all.
  4. Maybe if we all band together and walk to the club as a group..... right. Did these people not even look at the area before putting their money in to this spot? Seems like only the hardcore would be willing to put up with the BS on that strip.... maybe its a good thing?
  5. the location was a bad choice... As much as I would like to support it, there's no way in hell I'm putting up with wanna be "gansta's" on that block... Support Stryke and what he's doing on Saturdays... 685 Collins next door is for sale at $280k (equip and liquor license). 6xx Washington is the kiss of death... How long b4 they start playing Reggaeton? Good luck though...
  6. <---- wonders if the music can be heard from outside Scores is one serious Queen scene.. I have gay friends who won't even go there. Hmm.. I bet the afterparty will be in Flamingo park.. :
  7. When the doors opened at 11:30 (last Saturday), there was a line of 9 people waiting to get in. At 1 am, the crowd had thinned out to consist of approximately me and the 2 girls I was with... oh, and some guy in the corner twirling glowsticks. I spoke with the bartender and asked if the club was doing better on other nights. She said that NV gets a crowd at about 6am. That must have been the 4 people mentioned above.... Keep in mind that NV had free admission and an open bar. DT at 34 next door is no excuse. This club is history or soon will be.
  8. I often wonder why people have to be so negative on public forums. Everyone is certainly entitled to an opinion, but why the need to attack and belittle? What is even more silly, is that most of the people here don't even know George A or any of the other folks they bash. Others read this stuff and come away with a pretty bad impression. Stupid... Based on what I know of GA (I was on 2 of the same record labels with him in the 90's and did a radio station in SoBe with him..90.9fm), he cares deeply for the music. George has done A LOT to further the genre and open the ears of many who would otherwise not listen. Personally, I don't care much for trance (or anything else "mainstream") but a difference of opinion does not make one person right and the other wrong; just different. Accept it and try not to hate.. Besides, less Hip Hop is a good thing
  9. Ha.. I was probably right next to you guys and didn't realize it. Guess it was one too many over priced vodkas.. was dancing like a fool most of the night.
  10. Such drama.... I went to Opium Friday to check out Sandra. Now usually, I can't stand Opium and the "I'm too sexy for my shirt" attitude of the staff/patrons, but I figured if CoolJunkie was involved, the night would be cool. I was right and wrong.... Sandra's set was smooth for the most part with only one small trainwreck (lasted only 2-4 counts). Music selection was, well, milktoast in the beginning and better towards the end. I honestly did not feel much energy on the dancefloor, but this is Opium afterall. All in all, thanks to CoolJunkie for hooking this up. While I only saw 1 person from these boards there, I'm sure there were others.... somewhere.
  11. For whatever it's worth, I like the old Space better. The new building has a bar in a bad location in the main room (should be on the other side). The result is people standing around on the dance floor in line trying to get a drink. Dance floors are for dancing... I do agree on the new terrace though, it's great!
  12. A weekly chart is a great idea for your website! I wish more DJs would post their top picks for the week/month... Thanks!
  13. Hi Rony... I've been producing for a while. Used to be very active in the Orlando scene when it was first getting started (back in the Oz/The House days). Moved to Miami Beach and that's where I am now.
  14. I had dinner there with friends last Friday. Cool place... didn't get to stay long enough to really hear Mark Brickman as much as I'd have liked, but what I did hear was real cool! Some good mixes on his site too. Definately worth checking out.
  15. Ahh... thanks for pointing that out. I am getting far too "Miami centric" in my old age. Didn't even see it ;D
  16. Perhaps I am the "odd one out the bucket", but I have always preferred to work with women on creative endeavors... particularly music. The female approach to lyrics/melody/harmony can be so completely different to that of the male, it makes me wonder why the combination is not more common. Unfortunately, technology is viewed more as a "guy" thing and seems to scare off a lot of women. This includes DJing. While things may slowly be changing now (MP3s CDs etc..), it was rare indeed that I came across a girl who enjoyed carrying crates of 12" vinyl in and out of clubs or cabling a rack of outboard gear. The women I have known involved in music have been mostly vocalists, some keyboard players and a few Djs (mostly steady gigs). Funny thing is that I think there are far more women in to self expression than guys. Hopefully, this will mean that as technology progresses and becomes less "obtrusive" to the creative process, more women will join in to this otherwise male dominated industry...
  17. I'm curious... Is there anyone else here in to making their own music? I know there are a few DJ's but how about vocalists, producers etc...
  18. Sounds interesting... I've always liked that space. Don't know about Sunny Isles though... Good 'ol "Crazy" Dave Sampson might get a little fiesty if the event is popular.
  19. It was pretty good... His set was more on the funky house side with just a touch of tribal. Lots of good energy in the room. I spent most of the night up on the stage dancing. Was anyone else there? If so, did you see the chic fall off the stage.... poor girl.
  20. Ahhh... if only you pressed vinyl.
  21. I am just getting caught up on things around here.... Since I am on the beach, does he have a site or somewhere to read up on his views? EDIT: Never mind. I just thought about the current commissioners.... he's got my vote!

    Save SoBe

Actually, Orlando tried the same sort of thing back in 1992 when Bill Fredrick was the mayor. I used to own a nightclub on Orange Ave downtown that was targeted by the proposed (highly biased) law (along with Beecham Theater/OZ and a couple others). To make a long story short, the fight against the city at that time caused us to battle them to a draw, close the club and the mayor plus the chief of police at the time to accept other jobs (Mr. Fredrick did not seek re-election, chief of police quit and went to the Orlando International Airport and I moved to Miami.... pennyless). Now I see this happening again. Interestingly enough, I happen to have spoken with the Dr. Sunshine guy who is representing the condo association a few times. Actually, he is a nice guy. While I don't like the thought of these restrictive laws being passed, the direction South Beach is heading may need to change. Maybe it is just me, but walking down Washington Ave or Collins between 5th and 14th at 2am can be rather scary. In Orlando, during the times mentioned above, the city had the police force stay away from the areas with the nightclubs. The effect of this was that petty crimes increased and allowed the city to use this against us to make the point that crime was a result of the clubs. The same thing looks like it is now happening in Sobe. A next step may be for the city to enact "zero tolerance" and start strict enforcement of the laws. This will allow them to compile statistics on misdemeanors/felonies for the purpose of showing in court why the proposed laws are needed. In our situation, it was the people that made the difference; people that frequented the clubs and lived in the area uniting to let their voice be heard against those that would snuff it out. My question is, do the current crop of SoBe clubs have a strong enough following to inspire this kind of defense?
  23. AARRGH! Rub it in... I stayed home with a head cold thinking it was "sars".. blah. Next time!!
  24. hmmm.... make (tribal) house music...
