  1. I've got the cutest story:

I first met my boyfriend in 4th grade... he sat in front of me & he was my first crush! We became friends, but I never told him I liked him, and then I moved away to another city a few years later after 8th grade and we lost touch.

Then, last New Years Eve (2000), over 15 years after we first met, we ran into each other at the same NYE party in Brooklyn... turns out he is in the Marines and had just gotten stationed in Brooklyn for 3 years!

We've been together ever since that night... (all together now: awwww)

    Love you Sgt. D!!!

  2. Also, if you like trance, you should consider hitting up Exit tonight to hear Tiesto.... I personally can't stand the place (well, the crowd), but its worth it for him, he's amazing live! Plus, if you go with a bunch of friends you'll have fun.

  3. Hey girl,

If you wanna dance, I'd say go to Vinyl to hear Danny Tenaglia... its the best night in the city as far as music & vibe go and only $20 a pop. But, be warned, there's no alcohol (if that matters to you), so be sure to hit up a bar or lounge in advance.

Another awesome spot (with no cover!) is Plant on 3rd Street btw Avenue B & C... they always have great DJs and even though it gets packed early, you can dance there....

Just my 2 cents! Have fun tonight.

  4. I went to Cream this summer for a friend's birthday and wasn't too impressed... its a small space broken into 2 rooms: a hip hop/reggae lounge (a small space with carpets, a couch or 2 and a bar) and a "house" room (even smaller).

Its a small space, but it never got crowded when I was there. The crowd was varied and was pretty much groups of friends. there weren't any singles, and everyone hung out with who they came with. No one really danced, either.

It would be a cool space if it was a free or even $5 lounge, but is definitely not woth the $20 cover! Then again, that's just my opinion.

If you want to hear great music and hang out with a young, cool, yet totally unpretentious crowd for FREE, I suggest hitting up one of my favorite spots: Plant, on 3rd Street btw Ave. B & C.

    Have fun either way!

  5. (By the way, this is totally different from dgmodel's post)

    Here's the deal:

I am writing a screenplay in which the main character is 21 year old guy who has an entry level job in finance. In order to make my screenplay realistic, I want to find out some first-hand details about that world, seeing as I've never worked in finance.

Anyway, here's what I want to know: like I said, the guy has an entry level job at a big firm, like JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Soloman Smith Barney, Goldman Sachs, etc. In other words, a legit firm, and NOT a "Boiler Room" type situation. He has no formal background in finance; in fact he didn't go to college at all: he's just a very savvy, clever, smart guy who's a great bullshitter whose cousin or friend got him an entry level job there. Therefore, he's just a trainee (he hasn't even taken his Series 7 or any other licensing exams yet), probably training to be a broker or an analyst.

That said, I want to know what a typical day would be like for him: what kind of activities, duties & responsibilities he'd have, who he'd be working with and who he'd be supervised by, what he'd get paid, what his hours are like, how quickly he'd be promoted, that kind of stuff. Also, what he'd have to do to get ahead: what exams he'd have to take, if there are any commission quotas or anything like that, or especially if there are any sort of unwritten rules.

So, any personal experiences or anecdotes from anyone who hae ever or currently works in the finance world -- especially as a broker or analyst -- would be very much appreciated!!! Anything you can tell me would be very helpful.

So, if you'd be so kind, please e-mail me any info or stories to me at alexandralmace@juno.com

    Thanks everyone!

  6. I'm not going to the shows but I'm covering them; I'm freelancing as a PA for Full Frontal Fashion at MetroTV...been here since last Monday & I'm working every day (yes, including this weekend) through this Friday, 8am until about 9pm every day... ahh!

Anyway, if anyone's bored, turn on MatroTV on Channel 70 for 24/7 coverage of all the shows. Enjoy!

  7. I want to know what would a typical day be like for an entry level guy at a big company at JP Morgan or Merrill Lynch... what kind of stuff would he do (like answering phones), how much responsibility he'd have, what his salary and hours would be like, how closely he'd be supervised, how much (if any) he would have any access to $$ or acocunts, how soon he would be promoted...

Also, as far as becoming a stockbroker, what is the process: training, studying for the Series 7, etc...

Basically, I want to know what would happen in the legitimate counterpart of JT Marlin in "Boiler Room," so any info, "tricks of the trade," stories or real-life experiences you could share with me would be very helpful.

    Thanks!

  8. This thread is way better than the lame words & pictures in the official Twilo scrapbook, or should I say, "crap book!"

Was I the only one really disappointed? Did anyone else order it? All of the Twilo fans on this board definitely could have put together a hell of a much better tribute. What a let down. Oh well... like the pic says, they'll be back!

  9. Hey guys,

I know this is totally random, but I am working on a screenplay and the main character has an entry level job in finance, and/or is training to be a stock broker.... anyway, having never had an entry level finance job myself, I was wondering if any of you could help me out with some "research" and let me know what kind of duties an entry level guy at like JP Morgan or Merrill Lynch would have...

If anyone can help me out or wants to share their experiences with me, please e-mail me at scrpiohney@aol.com.

    Thanks!

  10. First of all, sorry if this topic has already been discussed/dissected to death, but I just checked in on PVD's website to see if the Roxy date had been reinstated and....wtf?!

I am not knocking Sound Factory -- God knows I spend many a Sunday morning there tripping my face off and dancing until noon with some hotties back in my single days (or should I say daze), BUT -- is this really the best venue for PVD?

I haven't been there in a year, but even with the renovations, is it really big enough? Everyone is going to want to be on the dancefloor; no one is going to want to be chilling in the jacuzzi or on the 3rd floor while he is spinning, so it could totally suck if you're not on the dance floor, which will obviously be completely packed.

Also, the sound system isn't the grestest, and, well, I'll leave it up to you guys to debate the implications of what the crowd will be like if they are holding this thing at SF!

Anyway, just curious to hear your opinions... obviously, I would go see PVD if he was playing on a garbage scow, so you know I'll be there! Let me know your thoughts, darlings!

  11. I personally have never found a suitable alternative to Twilo. :(

Vinyl is cool but its way too crowded.

Centro-Fly occassionally has good DJs but I hate the chi-chi crowd and its not exactly the Twilo (anti) dress code!

There are lots of free lounges that play great music (Liquids, Plant, etc) but you can't dance.

The remaining mega clubs... they just don't do it for me anymore.

I live for the rare occasions S&D, PVD, Oakie etc come to town, and I've been to Boston to see them a few times, but its not the same...

    BRING BACK TWILO!

  12. Well, I've lived in Bay Ridge for over 2 years and have braved the nightlife many times, so here are my thoughts/recommendations:

First of all, everyone is right, its NOT Manhattan, so keep that in mind! Also, if you hate the crowd at places like Sound Factory or Exit (i.e what people on this board fondly refer to as "guidos & guidettes"), I would not recommend going out in Bay Ridge! But, if you're like me and you think Italian guys are the hottest things on earth, you're gonna enjoy it. ;)

My personal favorite place is Muses, the cafe/lounge on the corner of 84th and 3rd Ave. Its best on Fridays; there's a $5 cover but its worth it... its dark, loungy, comfy and there are usually attractive people there. Plus the music is good: usually progressive house.

The Blue Zoo, which is right across the street from Muses, is also cool.

Also in the same vein, 2 other nice lounges are Plush and Crimson Lounge, also both on 3rd Ave. Delia's over on 4th Avenue is also a classy spot.

If you're looking for a younger crowd, check out the Salty Dog on 3rd btw Bay Ridge Parkway & 75th. I swear, no one there is 21! Its a fun place to go for a laugh (try playing "spot the biggest chain," get wasted and get hit on by 17 year olds...seriously, the crowd is a mix of Meadow Soprano and Jackie Jr. look alikes. Anyway, the Salty Dog is a trip and is definitely somewhere you should go at least once, if you want a taste of Bay Ridge.

I haven't been to g, but I've heard its pretty cheesy and is basically Salty Dog with a dress code and a velvet rope.

If you like "bar" bars, Judge & Jury on the corner of 79th & 3rd is a low key place for a drink after work (my boyfriend loves hanging out with the old timers), plus a DJ spins house, trance & hip hip on the weekends and the place gets PACKED. The Wicked Monk on 5th is also cool, but also tend to be a younger, more rowdy crowd.

If you want to go to a less crowded bar, my boyfriend & my favorite place to end the evening is an Irish bar that is I think on the corner of 3rd and 88th... I think its called Fitzpatrick's or something but anyway, its a big Irish bar with tons of seating that's never even half full. The drinks are cheap, its dark & romantic and its a nice alternative to more crowded spots, especially when you actually want to have a conversation!

As for clubs, I really haven't been out to any in a couple years. My friends and I once braved Enigma (which I think is now Panache) on 65th and 14th or so, which was basically Bensonhurst High School's teen night. Some of my guy friends like Gazebo and Rio, but Brooklyn "clubs" all tend to be pretty cheesy.

A couple other places of note: if you want great pizza and a have a hilarious night, check out karoake night at Goodfellas restaurant (3rd Ave and 95th or so) on Saturdays. SO funny! Last time I was there, it was just me, my best friend and a table full of mobsters and their dates. After a marathon of Sinatra songs, my best friend got up sang a horrible version of "Kiss You All Over" and they sent us over a bottle of champagne! Check it out with a bunch of friends.

Also, in the summer, a great "see and be seen" place is the backyard of Omonia Cafe on 3rd Ave & 76th Street. Get dessert & a big fruity drink and have fun checking out all the young hot things before you head out to a bar or to the city. Its also a great place for a date!

Restaurants... there are so many awesome ones.... Areo gets the most attention; its like a city restaurant, very trendy and expensive. The bar scene there is the most fierce in Bay Ridge... quite a meat market, but at least a well-dressed one! The Pearl Room is also a nice spot for dinner, although a little overpriced. Arirang is a cool hibachi place, very fun to go with friends, as is Goodfellas. My personal favorite though is Wolf & Barry on 3rd & 72nd... amazing food, great prices & in the summer they have a very private, romantic backyard to eat in.

Finally, technically this isn't in Bay Ridge but for a real taste of Brooklyn, check out L&B Spumoni Garden on 86th Street... great pizza and a great scene!!!

Hope that helps... enjoy my neighborhood! :)

  13. Hi all,

Thought I'd check in on this reminiscing-fest....

I'm still around, been here since 1998... I remember all the old school people, too: JaseNYC, Randy, Glowgirl, Crystal Method, Miss Kitty and all the rest of you... I rarely post anymore but I still read the boards, and I'm glad people are still enthusiastic about going out. I don't get out as much as I used to anymore -- especially now that my 2nd home, Twilo, is gone -- but when I do go out somewhere, I almost always STILL run into old board members. Keep the faith, guys... nightlife will return to its glory days.

XOXO to all the old school CPers!

  14. Hi everyone,

I'm working on a survey for the Metro Channel, and I need your help! Basically, we're compiling a list of the Top 5 Best bars & clubs in Manhattan. The thing is, we want to know where REAL New Yorkers go -- not what Time Out NY, Zagat's or any other guides recommend, but the lesser-known places you actually go to week in and week out.

Anyway, if you'd be so kind as to share your opinions with me on any or all of these categories, I'd really appreciate it! List as many places as you want -- I don't need reasons or addresses, just names. And again, they all must be in Manhattan. Well known places are cool, but out of the way spots are even better.

You can either reply to this post or e-mail me your ideas to nycsurvey@hotmail.com

    Thanks guys!

  15. All right my lovelies, time to brainstorm:

My 23rd birthday is coming up in a couple of months, and I want to do something fun. I want to have a night out at a lounge or club with a few (about 20 - 30) of my best friends, but I don't know where to do it this year.

I don't have a ton of $$ to rent out a VIP room, and I don't want my friends to have to pay more than $10 for a cover (preferrably none, actually), but I want to do it somewhere cool... especially somewhere that plays trance/progressive house!!! Oh yeah, and it has to be on a Friday.

To give you an idea, I've had "parties" at Liquids, Leopard Lounge/Sin Sin, 13 and Opium Den in the past, so I need a new spot this year.

Any suggestions for cool places to party? Thanks guys!!!!

  16. Hey everyone,

My PR company is having a huge launch party for a new vodka from the makers of Absolut, and we are looking for a DJ to spin at the party, which will be attended by lots of celebrities, media & socialites. The music has to be an "accessible" mix of top 40, 80's, hip-hop, plus some house & trance... just nothing too hard or underground.

The party is being held at a huge penthouse loft in Chelsea on Wednesday, October 17, 2001. It will be from approximately 6:30pm - 10pm, and we'll pay up to $1000.

If you or someone you know if interested, please e-mail me ASAP at mace@lisalori.com for more information. (If you have a demo tape or some sort of playlist, that would be great, too.)

    Thanks guys!

    Alexandra

PS - the fee includes rental costs, as we can't provide any equipment, so you'll have to bring or rent yoru own. :(
