  1. I'm a disco cowboy. Can I meetup with you guys anyway? Maybe somebody has an extra pitchfork I could carry. JohnB
  2. I'll be there. Organise something and I'll see you there. JohnB
  3. Centro is the best club in the city right now, no doubt. I usually go on Thursday, so I'd like to meet up with you peeps. Post something if you want to organise a meetup. JohnB
  4. I don't know if I'm qualified to post for this one because I am only a living room DJ, but my favourite track of the moment which got a good reaction when I had a few friends over the other night is "Hydraulix" by Cybermen. Also "Fondue Free" by Mr. C. I'm really getting into tech-house. JohnB
  5. Spoiled rich boy who doesn't care about anyone but himself. Gee, he has a lot in common with Al Gore. I'll bet after the campaign is over they become golfing buddies or something. Actually I think Clinton and Bush would be great friends away from politics. Bush brings the eight-balls and Clinton brings the hookers. I have to say I'm not enthusiastic, but Gore really turns me off so I'm voting Bush. JohnB
  6. Those INS people are real fucks. They embarrass our country. I know firsthand from trying to get an old Serbian girlfriend of mine a visa for just two weeks here. They were such condescending assholes, it was all I could do to keep from strangling this one. Anyway, good luck with it. JohnB
  7. Absinthe looks like Windex, smells like Windex, tastes like Windex, but Windex is slightly less harmful to drink. You can feel it tearing out the lining of your throat and stomach on the way down. GAG! Anyway, it was very popular amongst late 19th century writers, so are you feeling inspired Scandalgirl? I thought the only place you could get the real wormwood stuff was Czech Republic. The way you drink it is to put sugar in a spoon, dip it in the drink, pull it out, set the spoon on fire to burn off a little of the alcohol, put it back in the glass, blow out, and drink. YYEEEESSSSSHHHHHH!! JohnB
  8. That's a little too early, although you might catch the Space opening party at the beginning of June which would be good. But most parties don't get rolling till late June/early July. The best time to go is for the closing parties in mid-late September, but failing that I wouldn't go before the last week in June. I'm headed over next year for the last week in August leading up to Labour Day. JohnB
  9. Definitely check out Madrid or Barcelona. Nice meditteranean feel, great clubs, and the best vibes in the world outside of Ibiza. Music is better in the UK, but atmosphere is unbelievable in Spain. Similar culture to Italy, only with much much much more feeling and more laid back. JohnB
  10. Totally agree. Centro is the spot. I missed last night for the first time in a few weeks because I fell asleep. But my friends who went said it was off the hook. Definitely there next Thursday and Saturday as well for the S-man, Roger Sanchez. JohnB
  11. I know a guy who booked Digweed in Austin, TX over the summer during their CD promotion tour, and he paid $6K for a 3-hr set on a Wednesday night, so on a weekend he must make more. JohnB
  12. I totally agree. Hip hop is the past and no one is doing anything remotely interesting with it now. House music is the furtre. So you always hear lame-ass commercial as hell tracks. It just pisses me off so bad that people in NY seem to think it is still cool, ie the people who go to Spa. I agree though that you never see anyone dancing to it. HHHHMMMMMMMM! Wonder why. JohnB
  13. Nolimit, From what I gather about you from your posts, it would be torture for you to go there. The music is mostly very played out mainstream hip-hop with a few played out Bob Marley house mixes in the side room, which you can't hear anyway due to how bad the soundsystem is. I only went once and it was on Saturday. I stayed less than 1 hour because I couldn't take it. I did hear it was better during the week, so if you have to check it out you should probably try a weekday. MissDiva, I totally agree with you about how lame people sound for ripping on a club because they couldn't get in, and I generally prefer places with stricter door policies. I came of age clubbing in Europe, and I've been out in every major city there, and believe me when I tell you, Spa ain't that tough to get in to compared to a lot of the places I've been. And I went to Life when I was here as a tourist, and I never had a problem with Kenny. I'm just saying the club itself is all hype and not much to it inside other than some cute girls and the odd famous person. That just isn't the reason I go out. No vibe, bad music, count me out. I go to lounges a lot too and I dig them if the music is cool to chill to, but if I go to a club I want to feel something. But if it's your thing, by all means have a good time. JohnB
  14. You're fuckin sick if you think so. It's pretty sad if this is the best in NYC. I'm really hoping Home can come and open a cool place with good music. Right now, Centro-fly is the only one that is a trendier place but still has good music. And what's wrong with Euro? I dig the Eurotrash kind of places. If Spa played upbeat house it would be sort of like a Euro-club, but all the shitty hip-hop they play there definitely keep it from being "Euro." JohnB
  15. That's what it said on the flyer. I love that place because they are serious about having good music, but it is still trendy and not just filled with juiceheads/crackheads, etc. JohnB
  16. I can't make dinner on Thursday, but will definitely be at Centro on Thursday as usual. I have a friend in town that weekend. Otherwise I might be tempted to skip Josh Dink. (Brilliant producer, but his skills don't carry over to DJing in my opinion) Any of you guys who missed Frankie Knuckles this past week missed a real education on the history of house music. That man is amazing, I was totally blown away. JohnB
  17. I don't understand what the big deal is about taking them on a domestic plane. I've never been searched, or even seen dogs sniffing bags on domestic routes. Do you look like a terrorist? If not I wouldn't expect you'd be searched if it was small quantities and it's on you, unless the cops know in advance you have it. International going through customs is a bit different, but has anyone ever been searched on a domestic route? JohnB
  18. Spa is a great place, if you don't care about the music, and don't mind the fact that people don't interact with each other except to pick up and that the place generally has no atmosphere. If however you go clubbing for any of the reasons I do, such as good music and good atmosphere IT SUCKS REALLY BAD!!! I went there once and will never go back unless they get a decent DJ and soundsystem. And I'm not one of these people who doesn't like places with dress codes or tough door policies. I lived in Europe for 4 years, and the velvet ropes are pretty easy in NYC compared to a lot of the places I went, so I'm used to it. And I like to dress up when I go out. I just want there to be a reason worth going more than that there is a long line outside and Jennifer Lopez went there once. I left after less than 1 hour. The only reason I went in the first place is the girl I went with knows all the people who promote there and we got comped and didn't have to wait in line. I wouldn't even go back again for free. JohnB
  19. If you define sober as no illegal drugs, then I club sober probably 90% of the time. I save the rest for special occasions. Drugs are fun, but I love the music and the feeling and can dig it either way. JohnB
  20. Nolimit, You know "The Bells?" How old is that track, 3, maybe 4 years? I don't know about here, but everybody and their mother were playing that in Europe for the last few years. Cox still plays it at the peak of all his sets, at least all the ones I've seen, including in Ibiza in July. Also, what's that big track that was on Sasha's GU CD? Disc 1, track 6 or 7. Everybody caned that for a year and a half. Cox is the only one who still plays it every time out. And I thought that "Phuture" track he made was pretty cheesy too. Don't get me wrong, I think Cox is great, and I don't mind hearing good anthems some times. But I think of all the big DJs, Cox probably plays more anthems than any DJ except Oakenfold. JohnB
  21. Man, it's going to be sick for you guys. I'll be with you somewhere in spirit. I'm already thinking about when I will go next year, but I can't make the closing parties because of school. Anyway, post something from there if you get a chance. JohnB
  22. You can define "underground" many different ways, but I don't know of anyone who ever accused Paul Oakenfold or Carl Cox of being not commercial enough. I like the stuff Coxey plays, but his sets are full of anthems. And Oakey is not my style anyway so I don't bother. That's why I like S and D, they generally avoid the anthems, at least the really cheesy ones. JohnB
  23. I just want to make one point, and I don't know how many guys I'm speaking for, but definitely myself. I do not give a sh!t how tan a girl is. I've dated black girls, and ones so pale they looked like ghosts, and everything in between, and skin colour truly means nothing to me. I just want to say that to me, anyone who puts a lot of effort into a good tan is wasting their time. Of course I'm quite pale myself, so maybe I'm just rationalising. JohnB
  24. Damn Jilly, we've got to meet up some time. I think you would like what you see. Where do you hang out? I seem to always wind up at Centro-fly, even when I am just planning to have an early night, it never works out that way. JohnB
  25. I'm coming, but can't make it till 9 or 9:30. I thought that was the original plan. Is it cool if I show up later? I will probably bring some non-board people. Will you guys still be there? JohnB
