  1. Wow. I can't imagine hearing hip hop at Home. That's just not why you pay admission. He's lucky he didn't get a good slap for that sh!t. JohnB
  2. I did go to El Divino. Too many people behaving like movie stars and supermodels without the looks or charisma. I went for Moneypenny's and Danny Rampling was playing and the music was great, but the atmosphere wasn't so good. I could handle a place like that if I lived in the same city and knew people who went there, but I definitely don't want to go to a snobby and pretentious place when I'm only there for a week. As for the music, the trance is all imported from the rest of Europe after Ibiza got big. But soulful, vocal house is the original real Ibiza sound. All the local DJs play it. And definitely at Pacha, El Divino, and the Space afterparties it's all you'll hear. Even the "import" nights have a lot, like Moneypenny's every Tuesday with Danny Rampling. Also, the Sanchez-es, AVH, MAW, and the Subliminal crew play there a lot. So don't expect a tranced-out island. JohnB
  3. Sorry, haven't had much time to post lately. Good to see you and your bf there Blue. I made it to New York today so I'll be in touch this week. Ibiza is brilliant, but I think the more "real Ibiza" is Space. I ended up just quitting going to the other clubs and getting to Space at 8 am every morning when the afterparties started. As for the gear, well I got the best I've ever had there and also had some pretty weak stuff. Depends where you get it. You have to know someone to get the good stuff. That S and D set was the best DJ set I've ever heard. Then Sasha came to Hungary on Friday and had an off night. I see what you mean now Blue about same beat for hours getting boring. I had never heard him play like that before. He got it going for the last 1.5 hrs of a 5 hour set, but my energy had already worn off a lot. I got the inevitable cold after the last couple of weeks, feeling like sh@t today. If I'm better I'll try to make it to Twilo on Friday, we'll see. Anyway, see all you guys soon. JohnB
  4. I think Jeff Mills plays once in a while at Twilo, but not very regularly. All the guys you mentioned seem to be much more popular outside the US than in. Funny how that happens. JohnB
  5. While I'm certainly not in favour of censorship, I do feel that someone at ClubNYC should remove the ridiculous posts from the board, the ones that are obviously designed to make someone feel insecure and have nothing to contribute to the group. I mean someone posting that some girl is ugly/fat etc., is not adding anything to the general purpose of this board, especially not if the person has never even seen the other and is admittedly just trying to cause drama. Alexandra, I'll miss you I thought you had some of the best posts on the board. Anyway, I will finally move to NYC on Tuesday, so hope I will come across you somewhere. JOhnB
  6. This place is so full on and debauched it is just amazing. You just can´t fully believe it till you see it. As soon as I got here I went to Space. I got there about 6 pm. The crowd was excellent, much better than I was expecting, not just young pissheads, but real clubbers more my age (I´m 25). Everyone was totally up for it, very friendly, and it was probably one of the most beautiful non-A list crowds I´ve ever been in. DT was supposed to come on at 7, but apparently he missed his flight and didn´t show up till late. But their resident was good, playing some upbeat, soulful house. Then Steve Lawler came on, and he was okay, but a bit dissappointing. The crowd was so up for the previous DJ, and it took him half an hour to play a track that really got the crowd going again. Wasn´t too impressed. (I´m not doing detailed reviews with track names, I don´t want this to be too long) Then went inside and Carl Cox came on at 12:30. He really got people moving, but him playing before DT was a bit out of sequence, as he really wore a lot of people out. Finally, despite all the rumours that Danny wouldn´t show, he came on at 3:30. He started off slow, and kept taking the music down. I guess he could see how tired everyone was. Then around 5 he started to really play some tracks. He started with the Baguio Track, then played Put Your Hands on Me, Elements, and then blew everyone away with Flash. That was the peak of the night. He carried on till 7, then it was on to Bora Bora. I stayed for a while, but was too tired after 13 hours of non-stop dancing, so I didn´t make it there long. Then Monday at Manumission was mad. Actually I didn´t think the party was that great. The music was kind of cheesy trance, the show was nothing special (Mike and Claire just had a baby so they weren´t in the show), and the crowd was more the pisshead type. But I ran into a guy I had met at Space the night before and he took me up to the VIP room. It was all very downhill from there. I don´t want to post everything, but I pretty well lost contact with reality. I met Mike Manumission, and lots of the ¨Ibiza family¨. Then we went back out to dance in the Trade hardhouse room around 7. Who was out there having it like a madman? Danny Tenaglia. He was waving his arms, totally into it. I talked to him for a while, but it couldn´t have been very interesting for him in the state I was in. Stayed till 9, then onto Space. Was there till about 1. Then went home and slept till midnight. I was dead. Had a pretty quiet one last night. Went to El Divino and didn´t like it too much. Lots of want-to-be A-list people. Good music, but no vibe. That was fine though, I was happy to be home early and have a rest. Made it to the beach for the first time today. Feeling up for it again tonight though, he he. All you people headed here this summer will have a blast, just do some kind of training before you get here. JohnB
  7. I thought about it a lot lately. I used to think I liked almost anything funky on minimum 120 bpms. Then a good friend of mine got into UK garage, which is quite funky, and as soon as I heard that I wanted to jump out of a window. I like almost anything house that´s not cheesy. I can even get into commercial house if the mood is right. Right now I´m big into the Digweed style progressive stuff. (And people quit confusing progressive and trance, the difference is in the beat, and it is very clear, although DJs may cross over a bit in their sets). But I like all house, deep, soulful stuff, vocals, but especially the dark stuff (yes I love DT too). I can get into trance if it´s not too fluffy and ¨girly¨(I never thought of trance as girly before) but I find the repetitive trance beat to get a little boring and robotic after a while. It´s very restrictive. If you can let the beat and the bassline flow the music can go in many more different directions, and take you with it. I like it though, but I like house much better. When breakbeat is played progressively I really love it. Sasha and especially Anthony Pappa weave in a lot of wicked breaks in their sets. But everyone who I´ve ever seen who calls themself a breakbeat DJ plays it more like hard DnB with hard beats, which turns me off. I´ve never seen any of the top ones though like Freeland or Layo and Bushwacka. I´m looking forward to check out Freeland at Twilo some time. DnB, I´m just not full of adrenaline enough. I used to just not care for it, but now I have grown to hate it, because I´ve heard too many people call it the ¨real underground¨ when all they are doing is putting some cheesy anthem on top of a painful beat. I saw LTJ Bukem once, and although he was much better, I just couldn´t dance to it. Big beat=cheese. Nuff said. Techno, when it´s played funky like Jeff Mills it´s brilliant. But most techno DJs I´ve heard in Europe are painful. I think the Americans really are better at techno. JohnB
  8. Razor and Guido? What are they a heavy metal band? JohnB
  9. Digweed! He has really improved lately. Gotten much more funky and soulful. That´s what I love, when it´s dark and banging, but still really funky and danceable. Sasha has more energy, but Digweed fits my taste better. But as I mentioned on another post, I really respect them for being able to make the crowd go nuts on new tracks every time, rather than just playing anthems. I agree with Nolimit totally. It´s easy to work a crowd with the same tracks over and over, but it really shows you have talent if you can play a track you never played to a crowd before and know it will tear the roof off. JohnB
  10. That´s one of the things I love about S and D, that they don´t just get up and cane their hits, or everything they´ve ever put on a compilation CD. I can never ID many tracks when they spin even though I follow them closely. That´s the way I like it. If a DJ would play all new tracks I´d never heard before I would be happiest. If you want trance anthems, go see Oakey. JohnB
  11. No offense to you guys, I respect your preferences, but I REALLY hope UK garage doesn´t catch on in the States. I can´t take it personally. JohnB
  12. Digweed GU 14 is the best of the series. I play it all the time and it still hasn't played out. Deep, dark, funky grooves. Why Digweed is my favourite DJ. JohnB
  13. No, the only anti-oxidants are vitamins A, C, and E. I read about St. John's Wort once and some people take after coming down for a while and say it helps. But it is dangerous if you take it at the same time or shortly after the E. So are other anti-deppressants like Prozac. Thanks to everyone for the advice. I'll post an update from there at some point next week. Check out the Djs who will be there during my week: Sun- Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Steve Lawler at Home/Space Mon- Manumission Party at Privilege. Don't know Tues- Danny Rampling at Moneypenny's/El Divino, Paul Oakenfold Wed- Dave Seaman, Nick Warren at Rennaissance/Privilege. After party Timo Maas and Scott Bond at Space Thurs- Seb Fontaine at Cream/Amnesia Fri- Lil Louis Vega at Ministry/Pacha and Erick Morrillo at some MTV party Sat- Roger Sanchez at Amnesia Sun- Sasha & Digweed, Jr Sanchez, Steve Lawler at Home/Space Mon- Manumission again Tues- I stagger off the island in a sad state and sleep till my next party, which will be Friday when Sasha comes to Budapest just for my going away party . What a couple of weeks. JohnB
  14. Uhh, you sure you're on the right message board? Although the thought of seeing a pro wrestler smash Danny Tenaglia's face into a cake did crack me up. JohnB
  15. Home@Space has a full-page ad in Mixmag with the time schedule for every one of their parties this summer. I'm sure you will come across a copy when you get there. See you soon, JohnB
  16. I'm headed to Ibiza this weekend for 10 days, which means lots of hot sun, dancing, lack of sleep, and, well, some uh, other party favours. This combination would seem to lead to physical exhaustion. My question is if anyone has any pointers of things to do and/or vitamins to take to hold up for 10 days of this? I know to drink lots of water and eat bananas like a monkey, but does anyone have any other pointers? Thanx, JohnB
  17. Freedomtat inspired me to reply to this. I too am a godamn finance type who hates to be around people who live their work, which makes life difficult sometimes. I'll be starting at Columbia business school in the fall to do an MBA. Granted I will be in a very small minority of people there who are as fanatical about clubbing and dance music as I am. I was debating whether to post this or not. I don't want to sound arrogant, but certainly most people with MBAs from Columbia don't end up flipping burgers, Dicksucker. JohnB
  18. Actually the Body and Soul CD works great for me. JohnB
  19. Glide, I totally agree. Pete Tong and Judge Jules are the cheesy idiots of the UK scene. Just play the cheesiest versions of whatever is popular at the time, and play all the hits you hear on cheesy Ibiza compilations. Hell, they make a lot of those compilations. But I guess they make tons of money, so they probably don't sweat it too much. JohnB
  20. Okay, I'll try to make it to Cafe Del Mar on Saturday for the sunset and look for you then. I've got the full schedule with times for Home@Space. Jr. Sanchez will be on 5pm-8pm, and Steve Lawler will be on 8pm-11pm. I mentioned S and D already, and other than that it is the space resident DJs, who I heard were pretty good as well. Have a good trip. I'l try to post an update mid-week on this board. JohnB
  21. BTW, did you notice the last post promoted me to New Skool? Moving on up the Club NYC ladder. JohnB
  22. I just extended my Ibiza trip for two more days so I can catch my favourite DJ, Digweed. So I'll definitely be there for that party at Space on July 9th. That's the day you get there, right? Digweed will play by himself from 10am-1pm, and then Sasha and Digweed together from midnight till close. I'll definitely be there the whole time they're spinning, but I'll probably step out in the afternoon for a while (they do have Jr. Sanchez and Steve Lawler during the afternoon, so it should be worth checking out) Anyway, I think I can pick you out of the crowd from your posts so far. Just wave your glowsticks high and I will find you. Just in case, I'm tall (6'4) and skinny with brown hair and eyes, and they'll be as big as tea saucers for this party. See you there, only 6 more days for me! JohnB
  23. That August 4th lineup looks phat! I'll definitely be there for that. Pappa is wicked! JohnB
  24. Sasha hasn't lost anything. He's just playing a different style, get used to it. I always liked Digweed better anyway because I love that deep, dark, banging house sound. If Sasha sounds more like Digweed now then in my mind it's an improvement. So like I say, he hasn't lost anything, just different music appeals to different people. Don't say he lost it just because he doesn't play as much to your personal taste. JohnB
  25. This time 8 days from now I'll be sitting in Space, waiting for Danny Tenaglia to come on. JohnB
