Hey my man, I would highly recommend the "Tasting Room", It is a small Lower East Side restaurant that has a real following. All dishes are available in two sizes so that you can sample many dishes in an evening. 300+ wines available. I work with or have worked with two of their servers, and they could have jobs at any restaurant in town. Very professional and yet casual at the same time. The place is not cheap, but you can not skimp and have nice wines for $75 pp. easily. Alternatively if you really want to splurge try Daniel. Real for star food and service. I would reccomend my resaurant but it has gone downhill recently. Good luck.

Yes it is true that many hotels and even some restaurants are unionized and you can earn 12-15 an hour plus tips and benefits. These are not easy jobs to get and are usually reserved for people who have chosen bartending/waitstaff as a profession. Try finding a job at a restaurant as the hours are much easier if you are in school and the money can be very reliable. Otherwise hit the pavement and find a bar willing to give you a chance. Good club jobs are hard to come by and the hours can be very long, the money can be great though if you can get in. Good luck and don't bother with bartending school. Get some books, learn what you can and pick up the rest on the job.

I happen to be a bartender and I must say that vejita is spot on. A buck a drink is fine although in this day of the ten dollar cosmo at many places this is only ten percent. That is okay although I believe it was sirdante that pointed out you should tip twenty percent when settling a tab. One thing sirdante, it is NOT acceptable to tip a quarter if your beer cost $3.75. You just look cheap. Peace

wish I could do that where I work... but seriously the only time it is acceptable to leave change on a bar is if you drop a $bill on top of it. Tipping is not a city in China

Hey Tom, I think Spreewell's got the right idea about the Brooklyn location. It is really easy to get to from Manhattan. Also you might consider having it on the water under the Brooklyn Bridge Brooklyn side. There is a nice little area there that we used to throw keg parties at while we were in high school. Nobody fucks with you and you get killer views of the Manhattan skyline. Just a thought.
