3. As some of you may know, July 17 is the Pioneers of House Music Day. While the holiday was a ploy made up by Mayor Daley to drum up votes, I still choose to accept it, embrace it, and celebrate it as dance music's first holiday. Heck, it's 21 years after the fact, and now dance music has gotten stronger than ever! The July Mix of the Month is a blend of a lot of New York's old school house. When I got a chance to see the Big Apple in the last year, I was fascinated to see how their scene never really worshipped DJ International, Chicago Trax, and all the labels that came out of Barney's Records like we in Chicago did. Back in their day, New York was all over big names like Todd Terry, Junior Vasquez, Clivilies and Cole as well as forgotten names like 2 In A Room, Richie Rich, and Two Without Hats. Some of you may not be as fascinated by this as I was, but the mix still contains a lot of favorites from back in the day. The Top 20 contains the twenty old school records I call my all time favorites, spanning from house to electro-funk to disco. MIX OF THE MONTH - Listen (Windows Media) D-Jam's Top 20 Old School Favorites (July 2001) Rock To The Beat - Reese - KMS - Listen Work My Body - House Gang - IHR - Listen Energy Flash - Joey Beltram - Transmat - Listen Voodoo Ray - A Guy Called Gerald - Warlock - Listen Blue Monday - New Order - Qwest - Listen Acid Thunder - Fast Eddie - DJ International - Listen Apache - The Incredible Bongo Band - Strut - Listen A Day In The Life - Black Riot - Fourth Floor - Listen Good Life - Inner City - Virgin - Listen Confusion - New Order - Streetwise - Listen Let's Start The Dance - Bohannon - Mercury - Listen It Is What It Is - Rhythm Is Rhythm - Transmat - Listen Change On Me - Cynthia - Micmac - Listen Frantic Situation - Soul Sonic Force & Shango - Atlantic - Listen I Feel Love - Donna Summer - Casablanca - Listen Tour De France - Kraftwerk - EMI - Listen Stand By Me - Julian "Jumpin" Perez - DJ International - Listen Grand Piano - The Mixmaster - Blanco Y Negro - Listen One Way Love - TKA - Tommy Boy - Listen Hardcore Heaven - DJ Seduction - FFRR - Listen [/list=a]
4. DJ Craque astounds the one and many with his choices of minimal and experimental techno. Listen to his mix on OS Magazine: http://www.osmag.com/local/
5. I hate to tell you this, but it is an issue of legality. Politicans listen to parents because parents vote for them. Parents don't want their children doing drugs, even if they were all psychadelic in the 60s. There is no bargining or reasoning with the police and politicans. You can't have it that they will bust a PMA dealer and not an MDMA dealer. You can't have it that they will stop a fight, or haul away a dehydrated kid, but not raid the party. You have to accept that, no matter how much you disgaree. Yes people are getting high at games and big stadium concerts, but right now, clubs and raves are an easy target. The news media has shaped them into crackhouses in the public eye, and while the "outsiders" see them as the garden of forbidden fruits, the easy way for people like Mayor Daley to score votes is to shut them down. I personally think that what one person does to his/her own body is their own business, but if a place like Galaxy Nightclub is shut down simply because someone bought E 10 miles from it, then you know that the scene is being watched with a close eye. I said it once, and I will say it over and over: If you want to roll E, do it. No one is stopping you. If you want to test your pills or other's pills, great. More power to you. But if you want the scene to stay alive, then show some respect for it and stop taking E in the clubs and raves. You people have the power to take Daley's ammo right out of his hands and yet you don't do it! If you want to keep telling me that "drugs are a part of the scene", then say that to me when places like Redno and Smart Bar are gone. Say that to me when the Aragon and Riviera will not allow Oakenfold, Digweed, and Dave Ralph to play there. You ever wonder why these glam clubs are in such high numbers? Places like White Star and Kustom? Ever wonder why Nocturnal BANNED any type of glow toys? Ever wonder why "proper attire" is all over? It's because club owners don't want to see their investment go to waste due to a couple of stupid kids ODing. You can post whatever reply you want to this, but I will state the obvious: 1) E is illegal 2) DanceSafe is now being tracked by the DEA 3) As long as people like Daley and GW Bush are in power, there is no scene where people can take E and dance all night. D-Jam
6. That is true. Witht he rash of raids and shutdowns, more promoters are fearful to invite DanceSafe to their events. it sort of paints a big target to the authorities: "If DanceSafe is there, then raid the party!" Not to be mean or coldhearted, but I also think that if someone is going to be stupid enough to buy an unknown pull from a total stranger at a party, then he/she deserves whatever dangers they receive. I don't do drugs (never had, never will), but even I know that if I wanted E, I would buy it from a trusted source. D-Jam

8. No no. Fusion Entertainment is the home of VooDoo resident Tim Fusion. What you are talking about is Fusion Fridays by ChicagoFusion.com. That is an entirely different group altogether. Chicago Fusion is going to be hitting the X-Treme Throwdown that night at Nocturnal. Glad to see that you would show. I know Schaumburg is a stretch for some of you, but this will prove to be a great night for those who can make it. We have a lot of great local musical talent in store for you behind the decks, including Paul Johnson. There's an open bar from 10-11, and the cover is only $5. It's a heck of a night. Thanks! We're hoping to infuse some new blood into VooDoo and take their Fridays to a new level. Just support us, and we will bring great nights like this to the city venues! 10. OK, I remember spending a LOT of time arguing with some of you about the Oakenfold on MTV situation. I hope I did not offend anyone with my opinions. If I did, I apologize. Now then, I just picked up the latest issue of MUZIK and the cover story was how the "UK clubland has cracked America". It has a big story about Oakenfold and how a lot of the UK was bashing him the way some of you did here. Now I don't want this to be a "Oakenfold Bashing Session". What I want is an opinion on the fact that club life and club culture has gone beyond the small clubs and secret raves here in America. Suddenly, people in small towns and suburbs know of Oakie and Ibiza. They are going to raves and downloading/buying trance mixes. I want to know what everyone thinks of this? Is Oakie on MTV and the entire country getting into electronic dance music a good thing? I want HONEST, THOUGHTFUL OPINIONS! I don't want bashing or arguments. Just say who you are and what you think. Are you a DJ, producer, promoter, or just a club enthusiast? Do you think the explosion of club culture is a good or bad thing? You all know my opinion, now I want yours. I want to write an article for OS Magazine on BOTH sides. I want to quote some of you to show readers the pluses and minuses of this. THANKS!!!!! D-Jam
11. Sorry about that. This board has been acting screwy. It first did not put my post up, now it repeated it a load of times! Apologies.
12. People, I think we are digressing here. Chicago Fusion covers one niche of the nightlife scene in Chicago. Personally, I like their site way better than all those other club photos sites like Chicago Scene and Whatsupchicago. I may not be into their scene, but I cannot deny their popularity. They give that scene what they want. They make average people into weekly celebrities and give their following the "see and be seen" lifestyle. Some of you think that the clubs they hit are garbage, and you have a right to your opinion. If you don't like places like Mars or Nocturnal, then don't go there. If you don't like their site, then don't go there. We tend to get into this "I don't like that" mode and then it turns from "I won't go there" over to "I want that place gone". That's just silly. If you want something deeper out in Schaumburg, then head to Mission, or come down to the city. Mars 2112 is trying to be a trendy tourist spot, and if they are getting a crowd, then they are doing something right. The nightlife is so vast that it has space for ALL scenes. From the "club community" scene to the Chicago Fusion scene. BTW...you can't expect a suburban club to be totally deep. I've seen it tried several times and it just fails. The deep suburban crowd just heads to the city every weekend. D-Jam

19. whoah...PEOPLE!!!!! Are they like, REAL???
20. There are a few. Crobar is one of them. Rednofive has more of a progressive house trip, but their promoters, PURE (http://www.purefuture.com) throws some pretty impressive events with trance music. Check out OS MAGAZINE for more info on Chicago's nightlife! D-Jam
21. Ok, I'll have to head back there for a second look. When I went there to review the club (last year), it had a strict dress code and a selective front door staff, along with high-priced EVERYTHING and top-40 music. I just can't keep up anymore! D-Jam
22. I do remember all the parties at Oak and Centrum, but I missed out on those. I did frequent Alcatrazz, which was an ok teen club. It did get real ghetto near the end. I also remember going to China Club when they had an 18 and over night in their Dragon Room. Now that I look at it, with Nitro, Zero Gravity, and Galaxy being the ONLY teen clubs around Chicago for the last number of years, it's no wonder that the glam lifestyle of places like Rive Gauche, Kustom, and White Star Lounge have become so popular. YUK!!! D-Jam
23. Wild! You read my mind. Actually, my pals and I will have a huge article out on OS Magazine around June 1. We spent 10 days in NYC and saw a lot of it. We'll let you know what's going on there. As for airfares, those are good prices. I went United for around $200, but I booked them several months in advance. As for hotel, let me put it this way... if you know anyone you can crash with, CRASH WITH THEM!!!! I shopped and shopped for hotels. All I really need is a bed and a shower. Most of the places want mega money for a room. The Day's Hotel on 8th Avenue gave a sweet deal, but there was always a price. I spent the week sleeping on an air mattress while my two buddies had the beds, so it was 3 guys cramped into a little room. There was a mouse running around the hotel, and the staff almost messed up our rate. Like I said, every lost cost has a price, so stay with friends if you have any over there. Getting around NYC is great, because they have LOADS of subway trains that can take you ANYWHERE. Brooklyn, Coney, Times Square, The Intrepid, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park (what a walk!) Clubbing is the big deal in NYC, and the covers are high, high, HIGH! It's $30 to get into Sound Factory or Twilo, and the only help is a $5 off guest list . You can got on Sound Factory's guest list at http://www.soundfactorynyc.com. For Twilo, head over to Satellite Records in the Bowery. They have a clipboard near the checkout where you can sign on their list. Other cool clubs to see woulf be Vinyl, Exit, and even Centro-Fly. That's only a little bit. I'll let you all know when I have the full article up! D-Jam
24. Of course I remember Medusa's! I went there on a weekly basis back in the day (OH THE MEMORIES!). In fact, if you go to the Mission, Dave still has those padded leather doors fromt he Sheffield club up on the second floor. I also made a pretty wicked mix dedicated to Medusa's... Go download the MP3s of this mix before NBCi totally shuts down! The Main Room - DOWNLOAD The Video Room - DOWNLOAD Excelsior!
