And our firewall happens to be pretty good here, but some websites that we need to access require proxy servers, the new version of AIM detects proxy servers on it's own, therefor you don't need access to the firewall setting. How's that for someone who isn't a computer nerd?

Your a programmer and you don't know about the new version of IM? I have no access to my firewall and I run IM all day.

I do it all day. You can go to aol.com and use the IM Express which required no download, it's just not as fast as IM, or download the newest version of IM and go to setup, then select connection, then hit auto configure. It will detect a proxy server that will allow you to sign on. It works for me. But every time your internet crashes you have to autoconfigure again.
