  1. They look really nice, but think twice when buying them. I know so many DJs who've gone through at least two of those. They have the same complaint- it breaks very easily. The construction isn't good enough. I have the technics rp 1200, and they're really nice. Similar sound quality as the sony, but feels more durable. The earcups are smaller, but the fit is tighter, so it keeps the sound in better. they're also pretty light, and quite comfortable. I've heard good things about the Sony 7506 also. The Sony 600 is good, but not enough bass. Too much mids. If you're looking for headphones, that will last you a while, then you might think twice about buying the Sony 700s.
  2. Do they still accept the CP guestlist there? Last time I was there, Tascha, the girl at the door, said to someone that they didn't accept it anymore. I don' t know...either way, the Subliminal parties are the best! It should be a great time. The most you'll pay is $20, which is better than most clubs.
  3. I gotta agree with mysterynyc! All those DJs he mentioned play cheesey music. I may be going a little extreme here but the music they play is almost analagous to what bubble gum pop is today. I've talked to those kids who go to Roxy and Exit and they're very uneducated about electronic music. They've never even heard of Paul van Dyk! It seems the mainstream club scene in NYC is just all about hoppin on the bandwagon. To me that's narrowminded! Another thing...whatever DJ spins anything from Digital Allies, particularly "Without You," does not know real electronic music. The song is a cheap imitation of trance, and the guy can't sing...he's terrible!
  4. Yo John, Great party on Tuesday! Thanks for lettin me spin a few records in the beginning...let me know if you want me to spin again for a bit, while the place is still empty! Hahaha...it was great hearing that progressive shit loud. You know, I noticed we have similar records...even though you got like 100 times more than me. By the way, I'm headin over to Soul Kool tonight to help promote. I'll give your demo to the guy there. I think the place where he needs DJs is called Abaya. It may be somewhere else, but last time I heard it was there. Got some sick new breaks lately?? Mike
  5. Hey, Soul Kool is looking for people to join their street team to help promote CDs that come out of the Ministry of Sound label. We basically target clubs, lounges, and any other spot related to electronic music. For the time being Soul Kool is promoting CDs, but in the very near future they will begin to broaden their operations. This is a great time to help spread electoronic music. To compensate for your efforts, Soul Kool will provide street teamers with free promo stuff like T-Shirts, CDs, record bags, promo records, and free tickets to certain parties and events. All this just to help spread the word about electronic music!! Please visit www.soulkool.com Join the Soul Kool NYC community site at http://groups Let's blow up electronic music!! Mike L.
  6. Hey guys, Can you give me a list of your top 5 lounges in the city? I'm looking for ones that play chillout music...like Thievery Corporation, or anything really downtempo. I'd like to know ones with both dress codes and no dress codes. Thanks! Mike
  7. Hey guys, Soul Kool (music promotions) is looking for people in the NYC area who will be dedicated to promoting anything that comes out of the Ministry of Sound label. Currently, we are promoting Paul van Dyk's CD, Politics of Dancing, and the new Ministry of Sound (MOS) Annual CD. This is an opportunity to help bring out electronic music and make it bigger than ever. Soul Kool wants you guys to join their Street Team and help spread the music. In return, Soul Kool will provide it's street teamers promotional items, such as CDs, T-shirts, records, and free passes to certain parties and events. These guys got me free tickets to see PVD during Thanksgiving break, and all I had to do was pass out PVD stickers, Politics of Dancing promo CDs, and flyers. This is also a great chance to meet people in the electronic music industry. So, if you are interested, join the yahoo community site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sk_nyc For more information on Soul Kool, go to their website: www.soulkool.com Be part of the movement! Mike L.
  8. PVD used to spin 3 hour sets at Twilo every other month (2-5am), and so did other headlining DJs. What are you talking about kandyraver? Get your facts straight. The reason why people are continually bashing HB and other NJ clubs is because of their reputation. The KTU thing is probably the worst thing you can do to the music, but Bon Solidd and others are trying to change that. Give them credit. Don't come off with an attitude like you're too good to go to a NJ club because you can always go to NYC. I know you really want the music to spread and reach everyone...you want to hear quality DJs spin quality sets...and you want a great vibe in a club. But how is all that supposed to happen to NJ clubs when you guys act like hyprocrits and continually critisize how they're so gay?? It's half the DJ, and half the crowd. The two have to work together to make a successful night. You think an amazing DJ will bust out an insane set if no one is dancing...if no one tries to appreciate what he's doing? No, he won't do as well because he needs the interaction with the crowd. That's why DJs like Danny Howells and Danny T are so popular. They interact with the crowd. They party WITH the crowd. So, in order for things to change in NJ, people gotta open their minds, drop the superiority complex, drop the attitude, and enjoy the music. It's about the music, remember?
  9. WRONG Saleen...it seems you are making blind assumptions about Max Graham, whom you have no real knowledge about. I'm not defending HB, but I am defending the DJ. In fact, MG just spun at Centro-Fly last week on the 21st for a Hope Recordings party, and I'm sure you know about his Transport 4 CD. He's also recently spun at SF. This guy has nothing to prove anymore. He's an established DJ, and he's spun all over the world. The reason why he decides to spin at small venues in smaller cities is so that he can expose more people to the music. People outside major cities don't have the same exposure to electronic music, so it's important, if the music is to spread, that a DJ spins literally everywhere. He's not only a DJ, but also a producer and remixer. He's got his own style and that's what sets him apart from others. I actually have to give more credit to this guy for spinning in a Jersey club and not a NYC club. It shows he's all about spreading the good music (it's about the music, remember?), and that he's not just gonna go for the big NYC clubs to make more money. So watch what you say before you end up making a fool out of yourself. Sure, I don't like the reputation the HB has. I hate the cheesey commercial shit. But I give bonsolidd and the other promoters a lot of respect for trying to change that reputation by bringing someone who is as credible as Max Graham and Dave Ralph. Mike
  10. If you listen to Max Graham's Transport 4 CD you'll know what type of music he spins. He's absolutely amazing! He spins everything from dark house, to progressive, a bit of trance, and some techno. He blends all these in well and his programming is just right. Even though he's gonna be at HB, he's definitely worth seeing. No cheesey music from this guy...not like other DJs who I won't even mention.... If anyone has tickets to give out...please send them my way! I might take a trip back to NJ and check him out since I missed him at Centro during the Hope Recordings party. MikeLac01@yahoo.com
  11. Sandra's set was really good...very progressive and a bit dark. I liked her track selection better than the other DJs...good warm up set to CL's. CL's set was OK...his CDs are better, but he only spun for a little over an hour so it's hard to judge. The best song he played was the last song...but I don't know the name. BBB was sick...period! I really didn't dance much when he spun because I just wanted to see how he was tearin up the records...i didn't want to miss a thing. I've never seen anyone with that much technical skill...he's amazing! Good refreshing house and techno...but Sandra still played more of my taste. Overall...it was a great night...especially when you get in for free!! The crowd was a little too young for me...probably half of them were under 18 years old.
  12. HOLY SHIT!! I am finally going to see this crazy Dutch boy!! I had a chance to see him, Lee Burridge and Slacker all in one night in Cape Town this past spring, but I left the week before they came. That's it...I'm gonna pass out...too much to handle!!
  13. Hybrid performing then PVD spinning BT performing then PVD spinning (they've done some great remixes together) Kleinenberg and Dave Seaman Nick Warren and Max Graham Howells and DT definitely DJ Rap on top of me!
  14. Damn, for all you Digital Allies and Rich Luzzi lovers, what the hell are you guys thinking??? That music is the poorest display of electronic dance music! That shit is garbage!!! I can't believe that "without you" song got so popular. Absolutely no talent there whatsoever. It's just another one of those songs that hopped on the electronic music bandwagon. Shit man, get a clue! And what the hell is Rich Luzzi doing singing??? Anyone can sing better than him! It hurts me to hear his voice!! How can you possibly like that garbage??? You guys need to wake up and hear the real electronic dance music.
  15. Yo ibclubbin, Do you spin on vinyl or just CDs? And where do you buy your records? Got any favorite labels? Just curious cuz I do a bit of spinning too. Mike
  16. Ok here is the low down everybody. Scarlet DJs do play some good music at times. But most of it is commercial and KTu stuff. Some of the times the dj's have put some shit in there that is great. As for old queens i am happy to say that now they have a dj that actually beat matches and mixes somewhat well. "anything to make the ladies dance" is basically the theme for these djs. The only problem i've had with these dj's is sometimes they wouldn't even mix from song to song. They would just bring the song in. or the beat matching would be horrible. Scarlet and Old queens aren't the only places to here good house, prog house, trance. Harvest moon or Gaebals this Monday are the places to be. With breakers and all. these dj's atleast beat match. and the prices aren't as high as in Platinum. --jason nOte: "love in traffic" Satoshi tomie kicks ass :hat2: Anthony Pappa kicks ass with him "wondering how vinyl was with both of those bad boys"
  17. John, you're my hero! I wanna grow up to be like you one day! What's goin on with Gaebels? Are you gonna really move the party to Platinum?
  18. what kind of equipment do you guys have in the DJ booth?
  19. Ok ok...I guess that "KTUish" comment was a bit exaggerated. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I was just basically trying to say that, to me, the music JV played was more commercial sounding than what I normally prefer in a club. For what it's worth, I enjoyed Mark Amatucci's set better, even though I only caught the last 45 minutes of it. mike
  20. I'm probably going to piss off everyone who liked Platinum last night, but here's my opinion. The club itself looked pretty nice for a NJ club, particulary one that's in NB. I could see hey put a lot of money in the place, but overall, I was very disappointed with the night. I wasn't feeling the music at all, and it's probably because I'm not into JV's style of music. To me, that hard commercial vocal trance that he was playing was really cheesey. I wasn't feeing it one bit, but that's his style, and that's the kind of music that that particular crowd likes. The sound system could've been much better. Too much mid frequencies, and not enough lows. It made your ears ring more than it should have. This club was certainly not about the music. It was more about trying to be an Exit or a SF in NJ. Too many juiceheads, but many hot women! The entrances to the main room were too small and there was too much traffic going in and out of the room. The DJ booth was placed very poorly, although the booth itself looked pretty cool. I think they should've put the booth much closer to the dance floor, and not in the corner where the DJ is somewhat hidden, and his interaction with the crowd is very limited. My biggest disappointment was the music. Personally, I am more into sounds from Twilo, Vinyl, and Centro-Fly. A lot of the songs that JV played sounded really KTUish to me. The vibe wasn't there for me either...probably because of the crowd. Sorry, if I offended anyone, but that's just my opinon. I understand it's all a business and that they are catering to a certain crowd, and trying to uphold a certain image. I have more fun at Harvest Moon on Tuesdays, and Gaebels on Mondays. Much better music, and better crowd. mike
  21. NO BOOTS/JEANS/HATS TIESTO 18+/NO SNEAKERS/UFO PANTS EXIT NITE CLUB 610 W. 56TH ST, NYC FRI DEC 14, 2001 10:00PM I got this off the Ticketmaster website. What is this shit? They want us to go naked or something? Or do they want a crowd with no diversity where everyone looks like everyone else?
  22. What's the deal with the dress code at Exit. I never go there cuz it's too damn commercial, but I'd go just to see Tiesto. But I hear sneakers aren't allowed?? What's up with that?
  23. I think the most important thing about DJing is his interaction with the crowd. Many people can learn all the tricks to mixing, but what separates the great DJs from the rest is the ability to drop the right record at the right time. It's the ability to take the crowd on a musical journey. Of course, they have to be able to mix well, but the DJ's taste in music is sometimes more important. Overall, it's how you present the music, and what you do with it. A great combination of both will make someone an incredible DJ. mikelac
  24. PVD's set was great, and I agree he could've gotten harder and heavier. I wish he could've put more breakbeat into his set, but if you're only spinning for 3 hours it's hard to diversify your set. If he had at least 5 hours and played the same stuff the entire time then I'd be disappointed. i thought he finished his set strong after getting pretty deep and melodic in the middle. mikelac
