  4. Eisenhower warned us (full article) Rise of militarism under George W. Bush puts America on the road to ruin By JOHN L. GRAHAM Professor of International Business, Graduate School of Management, U.C. Irvine It was in an article in the National Interest in 1989 that Francis Fukuyama boldly asked if we had reached "The End of History." His notion was that free-enterprise democracy had finally defeated both communism and fascism. There would be no more real arguments about the best way to organize society. That was decided. But now, since George W. Bush's election, the ideological/political battle has begun anew. This time, it's free-enterprise democracy vs. militarism, and so far militarism is winning. This is so despite acclaimed historian Paul Kennedy's clear admonition about its perils. In his 1987 tome, "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers," Kennedy goes down the long list of countries that overextended themselves internationally and militarily and thereafter decayed internally. The story has replayed itself for at least the last 500 years - Ming China, Spain, Napoleonic France, Russia, Germany, Britain, Japan and the Soviet Union all fit the pattern. And now it looks like so will the United States. External over-reaching and internal decay define our day. Most recently we've seen not only another $87 billion for the "minor combat" in Iraq but also the calling up of 80,000 reservists. So now we've spent more than $150 billion on attacking Iraq - even though it was clearly never a direct threat to the United States. The connection to Osama bin Laden was never made. Given that the United States has a $10 trillion economy, we've spent more than 1.5 percent of our national earnings on a senseless military adventure. And we're not nearly done yet. Indeed, as we run out of reserves, how far away can a draft be? Full article (click here)
  5. U.S. President George W. Bush reacts while explaining to members of the media that he will not answer questions during his visit to Baghdad International Airport, November 27, 2003. President Bush stunned U.S. troops in Iraq on Thursday by turning up at their Thanksgiving dinner after a risky 27-hour flight saying he was "just looking for a warm meal." The highly secretive, morale-boosting visit took place as Washington and its allies come under intense pressure in Iraq. REUTERS/Anja Niedringhaus/POOL

  9. Being prejustice against black people and financially supporting the bloodiest dictator/tyrant of the 20th century is hardly a good comparison. I think what normalnoises is trying to do is expose the truth instead of sweeping it under the rug as it has been done for the last 50 years.
  10. Excellent! I've been waiting for Rabbit in the Moon to come back.
  11. Toll on U.S. troops in Iraq grows as wounded rolls approach 10,000(full article) BY ROGER ROY The Orlando Sentinel ORLANDO, Fla. - (KRT) - Nearly 10,000 U.S. troops have been killed, wounded, injured or become ill enough to require evacuation from Iraq since the war began, the equivalent of almost one Army division, according to the Pentagon. Unlike the more than 2,800 American fighting men and women logged by the Defense Department as killed and wounded by weapons in Iraq, the numbers of injured and sick have been more difficult to track, leading critics to accuse the military of under-reporting casualty numbers. Military officials deny they are fudging the numbers. But the latest figures show that 9,675 U.S. troops have been killed, wounded, injured such as in accidents, or become sick enough to require airlifting out of Iraq. "I don't think even that is the whole story," said Nancy Lessin of Boston, the mother of an Iraq war veteran and co-founder of Military Families Speak Out, a group opposed to the war in Iraq. "We really think there's an effort to hide the true cost in life, limb and the mental health of our soldiers," Lessin said. "There's a larger picture here of really trying to hide and obfuscate what's going on, and the wounded and injured are part of it." The number of sick and injured is almost certainly substantially higher, because the figures provided by the military last week include totals only through Oct. 30. Full article (clicky click)

  18. U.S. soldier accused of beating Iraqi prisoners says, `It is war' (full article) DAVID B. CARUSO, Associated Press Writer (11-25) 10:26 PST PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- One of four American MPs charged with beating prisoners of war at a detention camp in Iraq said Tuesday: "We were doing our jobs. ... It is war. It is not back home where everybody is safe." Shawna Edmondson, a 24-year-old Army reservist, accepted a demotion and a discharge rather than face a court martial, and returned to her hometown in northeastern Pennsylvania last week. Three other members of Edmondson's Military Police unit refused to accept a plea bargain and are on restricted duty in Kuwait. They could go to jail if convicted of abuse and misconduct. Fellow soldiers testified that the four Pennsylvania reservists punched and kicked prisoners who were being brought to an American camp in southern Iraq on May 12. One prisoner suffered a broken nose. One soldier said that during the attack, a beaten prisoner was "screaming for his life." Another testified that Edmondson told her that the attack was to "teach the prisoner a lesson on how to treat women." The reservists have said they were acting in self-defense. full article
