Blondes More at Risk for WHAT?

Mosquito bites. As weird as it sounds, mosquitoes prefer blondes. ABCNEWS.com reports that Harvard University professor Andrew Spielman, one of the world's foremost authorities on mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, says blondes and redheads are more attractive to the pests. Why? They stand out in a crowd. "Mosquitoes are attracted to contrasts," Spielman told ABCNEWS.com. "If you have one blonde person with long hair wearing bright colors at a picnic held in the shade, where the other people are dark-haired, you know who is going to get the attention."

Blondes aren't the only ones at risk. Mosquitoes also are attracted to women who are ovulating and people of both genders who have smelly feet or are sweaty. "Some people are clearly more attractive to mosquitoes. The precise reasons are unknown. But various research has shown that skin temperature, contrasts of color, lactic acid, and other conditions make a difference," Spielman, the co-author along with Michael D'Antonio of "Mosquito: A Natural History of Our Most Persistent and Deadly Foe," explained. Here's some mosquito battlin' advice from these experts: The more you swat, the more you'll get bitten. The combination of your moving arms and hands and the sweat you generate from this effort just attract the mosquito to you. And those electronic bug zappers? They only kill moths. They actually draw more mosquitoes than they kill! Spielman recommends bug sprays and oils with DEET to keep those buggers off you. Welcome to spring!
