Best Clubs in NY?!

Recommended Posts

alright everyone,

just joined the site and thought I'd put a post up to say hi to all. I'm from Newcastle, England and planning a trip over to NY in september with a friend. We are both house heads, Funky Chunky, prog whatever (apart from hard house!) DJ's we admire prob people like Deep Dish, Steve Lawler, Nic Fanciulli, Derrick Carter, Sasha, quite a broad range anyway.

just thought some people on here might be able to tell us a bit more about clubbing over there, whats the best nights?...

Hope a few of you can shed some light, we're really looking forward to the trip, cheer's in advance!

Graham

one word::cielo., the crowd at crobar is soo pretentious.,. they do pull great talent, but the dj's spin for the crowd and don't seem to perform to their potential and the sound system is lacking.,. spirit's been getting good dj's lately, sound system is great, but depends on the nite cos you can turn around there and just be like WTFFF.,. all i can say about avalon is karma.,. roxy..yuk.,.

Wicked, cheer's everyone, looks like some top nights on over there. Guess We'll just have to keep our eye's peeled closer to the tie to see whats happening. anyone know if Frankie Knuckles plays out much in NY? Would be great to see him over there

Avalon & Crobar

Don't go to Avalon. They pull some great talent but the crowd is too young and immature to deal with. I'm in my early 20's and I feel like I'm babysitting when I'm over there. So that basically leaves Cielo, Spirit, and Crobar. Crobar has, as mentioned, a pretentious and egotistical crowd. And the talent isn't quite up to par with what Cielo and Spirit bring in.

So, in my opinion, you basically have a binary choice:

Cielo for a more chic crowd in a small, intimate space

Spirit for a much larger, dirtier club with more of a warehouse feel

Cheer's Skaka, I had already heard of Crobar but Spirit and Cielo sound wicked, have to try and get a night at both. Would love to catch Danny Tenaglia in Cielo by the sound of it, only ever seen him in Ibiza.

Whats the dress code like in these places?, bit of a tshirt & funky trainers kind of guy myself, much more comfortable for getting wrecked.

You can pull that dress off at Spirit, or at Crobar during afterhours, but it's probably a no-go at Cielo. You're going to need to dress a bit trendier there. Also, I forgot to mention that Spirit tends to close anywhere between 6 AM and noon, depending on the night... whereas Cielo closes early, around 4 AM.

ALSO, other small clubs that attract talent are Sullivan Room and Canal Room.

Everyone that I Go with to Avalon (mind you my group is over 15 heads) is in their mid-late 20's and some in their 30's...so I dont know where you are getting this from...and the people that use my guestlist are ALL over 21...so you're a bit off on your statement...

Im not implying that Avalon has the best crowd & vibe...all Im saying is that its NOT a young crowd AT ALL....

Avalon brings in the BEST talent...so, if you go for the MUSIC, then nothing else should matter anyway :)

There is not really any objective way to settle this debate but I can assure you that Avalon is BY FAR the youngest crowd I have encountered in the club scene, and from other posts I've seen, other people seem to agree with me. The fact that it's often 18+ admission doesn't exactly help your argument much. And as far as nothing else mattering but the music, you're wrong. When I see those skanky gogo dancers they hire gyrating on those platforms with drunken frat kids pawing at them and trying to stuff dollar bills down their pants, I don't care if Jesus H Christ is doing a live remix of Plastikman, I get turned off and wish I was somewhere else. That sort of behavior is just impossible to ignore. Also, when have you ever heard of a Girls Gone Wild event held at Spirit or Cielo? Exactly.

Hey Graham,

Welcome! I can't recommend anywhere yet, but am planning to hit the town the next couple of weeks. I've only been back in the city myself for a few months.

Clubplanet.com/vegas has a great list of what to expect at each venue, NY has sooo many more places than Vegas. The event calendar shows who's spinning, but it doesn't describe vibe. Is there club review compiled for the city that's pretty accurate??

I would say that Las Vegas has a better lounge scene than NYC. But for clubs, you're definitely right... much better here.

Better lounges in Vegas? You really think so? Yes, Tabu & Caramel are pretty cool, but NYC has so many places with such great atmosphere: Evelyn Lounge, Le Souke, Mica Bar, Merc Bar, Bubble Lounge...

I guess I just got bored with going to the same places out there.

Well I was thinking more of places like Light and Rain and Ghost Bar..... I should have probably qualified this statement with "upscale" .... I usually tend to go all out in Vegas since I'm never there for longer than a couple of days at a time.

Hope i aint started a rivalry argument here...sounds strange to me to hear people talk about age limits between 21 & 18, they are nearly all 18 over here, well the good clubs are. Whats the legal age fro drinking over there?! There are loads of pisshead clubs where you have to be 21 but they aint worth going to anyway unless you want a fight and to pull chics.

the music is defintely the most important thing for us but the vibe has to be right too, no point going if the people there are gonna do your head in and annoy you. Think we will have to try a few out, i'm sure we are gonna have a top time anway, first time either of us will have been there.

I've wanted to visit for years but never got round to it, can't wait, i'm hopefully gonna be trying to move over there for a year next summer so gonna use the trip to try and make some contacts. Don't suppose any of you are friendly with any promoters, recording studios or live music venues?. I'm a recording engineer and do a lot of live work aswell. Been dj'ing professionally over here for about four years to, late bars and back room's in clubs, would love to get some work over there dj'ing.

Anyway, cheer's for all the advice guys and gals, lookin forward to it!

That's cool. Light & Ghost Bar are great. Rain's good if you have a sky box. Pure's totally hot, the new club at Caesars.

Shoot me a pm next time you're heading out there, I work with a bunch of the casinos & clubs out there.

cool.... july :-)

I've been living over here from the UK for about a year now, and what I've found is that like with most places you'll always get an off night wherever you go.

I've had a cracking couple of nights at Crobar when the music was spot on, but the crowd was a bit dodgy. Spirit definitely has a great system, and I had a great time for Fanciulli there, but the crowd was terrible. Howells on the other hand was unbelievable for both.

You're on holiday - I'm sure you'll have a great time whatever you decide to do. Pick a dj you like and make the most of it - NY is class and you shouldn't be disappointed!

Lol do what you want, I'm just saying I wouldn't go to Avalon if I were you unless you're some sort of high school teacher that likes dealing with teenagers.

!

Yeah, was just trying to get an idea. Had a look at a few websites/listings now and Avalon seem's a bit too hard/cheesey musically for me. think we'll just go wherever we can that's got someone good on. Wanna try and go somewhere thats typical NY too though, catch some residents or some local talents, no point only going to see dj's that i can see every week at Shindig.

Mockett, did you get a visa to stay over there or can you not say?

Avalon on Saturdays doesn't host those "special" events.... :nono: Saturdays has an ENTIRELY different crowd...

and as for your "I don't care if Jesus H Christ is doing a live remix of Plastikman" comment....dude you thought Chris Liebing spins TRANCE! :funny: Exactly. :aright: you seem to be having a hard time distiguishing different electronic music genres... stay @ Spirit...thank you.

from what i hear, you not only need to be over 25 to get into spirit, but also very mature

and the talent they bring in

some of the best that this state has to offer

and who the fuck is chris liebing?

:type:

I asked in my post what he plays because I don't know. And I only said that's what I heard on that one particular album, which I'm right about.
