Scariest movies ever...

Recommended Posts

Kind of a random thread here...

But for my Sci-Fi/Horror Movie class, I have to do a final project/paper, and I think for mine I'm basically gonna lock myself in my room one night and try to watch and analyze 5 of the Scariest movies ever made, all in a row, and try and rank them in terms of how much they scared me. I'm trying to get some ideas for some good movies to watch, preferably ones that I haven't seen already. I'm trying to find really really scary movies though. Nothing stupid like Nightmare on Elm Street or any of the corny Halloween movies.

Some of the scariest horror movies I have seen to date:

'It'

'The Ring' (I'm trying to get ahold of the original Japanese version, which I'm told is so much scarier.

'The Exorcist'

I'm struggling to think of any others that legitimately scared me.

But I'm looking for really really frightening movies. Thanks for any help.

If you are going to do an intense analysis of the scariest movies, I would suggest you watch "Rosemary's Baby." Not only is it one of the scariest movies ever made, but it's also one of the most brilliantly directed movies of all time.

Here are some other suggestions:

"Dressed to kill," with Michael Caine

"Sisters" with Margot Kidder

"Angel Heart" with Mickey Rourke and Robert Deniro

"When a Stranger Calls," with Carol Kane and Charles Durning

"Repulsion," with Catherine Deneuve and Ian Hendry

"Play Misty for Me," with Clint Eastwood and Jessica Walter

"The Beguiled," with Clint Eastwood and Geraldine Page

Trust me, you will not be dissapointed with any of these movies.

The Ring, American version, is much, much scarier. The Japanese version just does a better job of explaining the story. Definitely take this one out.

Plus, do you want horror scary or weird scary? For example, David Lynch has some great freaky movies, which are not necessarily "Boo" scary.. just mentally sick. Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks: Firewalk with Me, Lost Highway (starring Robert Blake!) are all great psychological thrillers.

Thanks for all the help. So far, I think I have it narrowed down to:

Ringu (original Ring)

Audition (another japanese horror flick which is supposed to be rediculously scary)

Omen

Rosmary's Baby

Black Christmas

I spit on your Grave

Deep Red (Italian Horror movie)

Session 9 (I think was made in Korea)

One of the Amityvilles

Hellraiser maybe

and I'm sure I'll come up with a few more, and eventually decide on 5 or 6. I've seen a lot of the other ones mentioned, and I remember a lot of them as being scary as hell too, especially In The Mouth of madness. Thanks again, and if you think of anymore, please let me know.
