Zeta 94.9 dumps rock music format

BY CHRISTINA HOAG

choag@herald.com

Fans of WZTA FM 94.9 got a rude awakening this morning -- their progressive rock station is broadcasting Air America's news and sports talk.

Radio industry sources said that the station, owned by Clear Channel Communications, is preparing to switch to a Spanish-language format. Zeta's on-air personnel have been laid off. The station's website also went blank, displaying only a message ``this site is experiencing technical difficulties.''

Clear Channel executives in Miramar, San Antonio and New York, did not return The Herald's phone calls Friday morning.

Clear Channel, the nation's largest radio broadcaster, announced last September that it would aggressively seek entree into the hot Spanish-language radio market by converting about two dozen stations across the country to español.

Ten days ago, it flipped Orlando station WEBG-FM 100.3 to a Spanish pop format to be called Rumba 100.3.

Clear Channel owns seven stations in the South Florida market. Zeta's ratings had been lagging for some time

no wonder.. I got in my car this afternoon and switched off from Big 105.9 to Zeta and I heard Reggaeton .. and I was like.. uhhh.. and I thought it was Power 96.5 and clicked on the button again and it was the same crap.. and then I thought to myself that it was another version of Zeta's 'En Fuego' which they air on sunday nights.. but now it all makes sense :(

Sorry guys, it's a national trend right now with Clear Channel owned stations. They recently flippped the heritage rock station in Houston to the same format you're now hearing on Mega 94.9 in Miami. KLOL was a heritage rocker for 35 years, but just like Zeta its ratings were very low.

See for yourself how Zeta was doing:

They also recently flipped Rock stations in Dallas and San Jose to Spanish, and in Orlando the only Oldies station in town was flipped to Spanish last week. There's a lot of rumors of Clear Channel flipping 98 Rock in Tampa (or some other Tampa property) to Spanish as well.

Rock or Modern Rock will hopefully be back at some point in Miami. You know the old saying - "You don't know what you got, till it's gone". Maybe if Miami will go on for a year without a Rock station people will get excited enough when a new station pops up.

As much as I'd love to blame Clear Channel for this, I think it's just Rock radio in general is suffering in the big cities. In Chicago the Rock station is struggling, and it's not owned by Clear Channel, and in Boston the Rock station is also down big time. Maybe the people programming these stations should just be allowed to think more creatively.

Miami's a pretty unique market, and I remember whe Zeta was trying to do Alternative Rock, or Modern Rock it was a very watered down version of the format. It might have done better had it taken its cues from the Modern Rockers of the West Coast, like 106.7 K-Rock in L.A., or Live 105 San Francisco. Their playlists and music mix are much more exciting:

I've also noticed Classic Rocker Big 105.9 is also somewhat struggling in the ratings. Maybe now that Zeta is out of the picture they might add some newer Rock as well. It'd be interesting if they sounded more like Virgin Radio in the UK:
