April 1, 2006 -- Seven trendy nightclubs were raided last night following a nine-month undercover drug probe, police said yesterday.

Police hit the clubs at 10 p.m., just as they were starting their Friday night parties.

Five Chelsea clubs were completely shut down:

* Club Deep, where undercover cops allegedly purchased marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy.

* View, where undercovers said they bought cocaine and ecstasy.

* Splash, where undercovers allegedly bought $2,700 worth of cocaine.

* Spirit, where cops said they witnessed assaults, including a stabbing; alcohol being served to minors, as well as drug use and sales.

* Avalon, where cops reported buying ecstasy.

One dazed and confused clubber at Avalon said musician Teddy Compton was in the middle of his opening act.

"Half way through the set, the volume just plummeted," said the woman, who asked that her name not be printed. "The NYPD just swarmed in. It was a hell of a lot of cops. The club was just shut down, nobody would tell us why."

Clubs Speed, on West 39th Street, and Steel Gym, on East 23rd Street, were issued "restraining orders," meaning they can stay open if they stop illegal activity.

At Speed, cops allegedly were offered sex for money, and spotted drug use.

In Steel Gym, undercovers reported buying the drug crystal meth.

"We visited most of these clubs in the past," said a police source. "It's not the first time we've seen this kind of activity."

this article should have said: Seven "ALMOST ENTIRELY GAY" nightclubs were raided by the homophobic police to make sure those filthy gays remember they are second class citizens.

This is really sad and messed up!

Ironic that most of these clubs cater to a gay clientele

1) club speed - "Area 10018" fridays happens to be the gay night

2) splash - popular gay bar & dance club

3) view bar - tiny little gay bar on 8th ave, you can see right into the whole bar from the street...

4) club deep - "Krash" fridays are gay night

5) steel gym - very gay gym in chelsea, has popular gay house dj's spinning

6 & 7) Avalon, Spirit

these two clubs are not particularly gay except they both share gay powerhouse promoter John Blair as a managing partner...

Avalon - has no current gay night. Only connection is that John Blair used to be the managing partner before leaving for Spirit. Supposed drug sales in the building. Ha. There would have to be some one in the building in order for anyone to sell anything.

Spirit: Not gay on fridays, but John Blair is one of the managing partners, who also does a gay sunday night party there.

Spirit is the only club I am not surprised to hear it was shut down, as it's run pretty sloppy and they seem to always have problems with underage drinking, fights, etc.

Nice work pigs!

so they are homophobic because they actually found drug deals.... gay or not the fact is, illegal activity was taking place, they knew about it and went after it - if they went to just all straight clubs, are they then heterophobic.... stop playing the "hate gays" trump card for everything.

I don't think its playing the gay card. Look at the history. Gay clubs used to get raided ALL the time. It was illegal for 2 men to dance with each other. Hence that is what spurred the stonewall riots because the gays got fed up. So it is not far fetched to notice that this is constantly done to gay establishments even in this day.

As far as the nonsense of raiding the clubs all the time. Its just politics. I think the city has too much power just to come in and shut down places they don't like. When it comes down to it Peter Gatien was aquitted on drug charges and so was Richard Grant. I'm sure NYC is paying for his club in Miami since they stole his building in NY.

The NYPD goes to these clubs buy drugs you see them its the idiots that ask were can I get this or that from complete strangers. They can only really shut down the club for good if they find some link between the drug dealers and the club. It would be kinda hard for the NYPD to go into a club arest drug dealers while the music is playing and people are dancing.

and besides everytime a stranger/possible UNDERCOVER asks for stuff, I always just shrug my shoulders. We don't TALK to strangers. :P
