  1. Yeah, I'm about 100% sure it's April 13 and not April 19.... Imagine.....drum n bass, breaks, garage, nu jazz, and every other non-4/4 music under the sun on the same night... Now, imagine a posh lounge with a hot system, plenty of seating room, and a location right near the A, C, E, B, V, and Path.... Now imagine some of CP's most talented and underrated DJs, all residing on the same night, with special guests every week.... Essentially, that's what you got. I'll give more details in a few days, but here's the lineup so far: Residents: Joe (JayP) - Breaks Rekall (Thehacker) - Drum n Bass and breaks Ken Olson (of Pseudo) - UK Garage and Drum n Bass Yours Truly - Breaks, Nu Jazz, and UK Garage Special guest for opening night will be Bluewater (Direct Drive/TestFlight) spinning atmospheric DnB... This is going to be a Sunday evening affair. Exact times to come with the rest of the full info. Location: Alibi. This is a new lounge that just opened up on MacDougal Street, near NYU. This place is nicer and larger than Coal...not your typical MacDougal Street joint. It just opened a few weeks ago, so if you haven't checked out the place yet, drop by sometime....you'll fall in love with it. Better yet, drop by on the 13th! That night is the test run of the event, and if a lot of people show, it guarantees that it will become a weekly. Should be tons of people there, and if things go well, we're working on booking bigger and better guests in weeks to come. I guess I could spill a few more beans, but I need to leave some suspense so you'll check us out And Oly, don't worry, it won't be long before Boston is chasing us....
  2. I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones was excellent in Chicago and deserved it. Problem for me with Chicago was that it really was more of a play on film than a movie. It was extremely well done, but it's nothing too special if you've already seen the play. It's kinda like when an adaptation of a novel gets tons of accolades, but you still like the book better.... Also, I'm super happy that Talk To Her won for screenplay....always a feat when that screenplay isn't even in our language... Most of my other gripes are with the nominations rather than the awards. None of my movies in my top 5 were even nominated for best picture. Go figure...
  3. Now that we're down to 16, what are your Final 4 picks? Gotta change one of my originals (damn Xavier to hell), but here's how I'm going at this point: Arizona, Syracuse, Marquette (I'm counting on Wade going lights out), and Texas (cuz they're in San Antonio)
  4. Finally got something going on..... Going to be an all non-4/4 night....all varieties of broken beats under the sun....drum n bass, breakbeat, uk garage, nu jazz.... It's going to be at a nice ass lounge in a central location, only 2 blocks away from 4th St. station... Details will be coming soon, but if anyone prods me, I might divulge a few of them now Let's see if we can get this shit back together again....Coal was good back in the day, but this can be even better....
  5. My vote goes to Steve Buscemi as the Buddy Holly impersonator...
  6. Original NES or other? I have an original gameboy with about 20 games sitting in a closet somewhere.....that shit should be vintage by about now
  7. Some guy named Bobby Friss gave me a CD of his back in about '89.....didn't get a CD player until about 4 years later, popped it in, and it was some of the worst hair ballad garage band type stuff I'd heard...
  8. Stantons are better than the Numarks....much quicker pickup on them. Both platters, however, are about 10 times touchier than techs.....that can work to your advantage though, because it forces you to really learn how to adjust using only the pitch (something I'm very guilty of not doing much)... If you're doing scratching, the straight tonearm is better. If you're predominantly blending (for long periods) you might prefer the Numark because the straight arm flutters more than the curved arm. However, I don't really find that there's that much of a difference, and since all tables flutter anyway no matter how perfectly you match up the beats, it really doesn't make too much of a difference unless you're spinning 3 tracks at the same time (because then you don't have as much time to pay attention and adjust for flutter). Hope this helped some.... Last piece of advice: you can probably find a pair of used Techs on e-bay or Craigs List for about the same price as new Numarks or Stantons.
  9. Might be the worst song I've ever heard..... Nah, there are worse, but it's pretty damn bad. Usually I like Big Boi, but that track is crap if you ask me...
  10. Binary Star - Honest Expression Goodie Mob - Cell Therapy Anything by Tribe Called Quest Pharcyde - Passin Me By Anything by Arrested Development Anything by Moka Handsome Boy Modeling School - The Truth Common - The Light Mos Def - Umi Say Brand Nubian - Slow Down (esp. the Pete Rock mix) Dilated Peoples - The Platform People Under the Stairs - Youth Explosion The Urbanites - Mental Status For smooth RnB....classic....Shai - If I Ever Fall In Love Another classic....Blackstreet - Don't Leave
  11. Since I had nothing to say under the top 10 now (the stuff I've heard is shit for the most part), what's your top 10 of all time? Can't really order stuff here, but... Goodie Mob - Cell Therapy Outkast - Atliens Blood of Abraham - Stabbed By the Steeple Geto Boys - Mind's Playin Tricks on Me Stetsasonic - Talkin All That Jazz Binary Star - Honest Expression Beatnuts - Watch Out Now Luniz - I Got 5 On It Pharcyde - Passing Me By Mystikal - Y'all Ain't Ready Yet I'm sure there's a lot of shit I haven't thought of, but I gotta run...
  12. Pete Rock, hands down the best hip-hop producer ever... I'll give RZA, Dan the Automator, Neptunes + Timbaland some credit also. I give Dre and Puffy no credit....all they do is sample entire old tracks...no creativity whatsoever.
  13. Actually, I was looking to head to Funktion since they have a breaks night......it would be nice to actually dance to breaks once in a while (not to mention that my favorite DJ in the world spun there last weekend ARGH). However, since I don't have a car, it's a really big pain in the ass....
  14. That was kind of my point there. I was doing some research for my paper and came across a DEA website about club drug strategy, and this was the picture on it to show what a raver was. Because that's evidently what they all look like....
  15. The place is nice....lots of sitting room, couches, etc.....drinks aren't too expensive, don't have to get all dressy, system is only so-so, but it's a small place... Never been there to that party though.
  16. Grandmaster Flash + the Furious 5 - The Message; after that, there was a really long gap until shit like Supersonic, It Takes 2, I Beat Mike Tyson, Micheal Jackson only wears One Glove, and The Cars that Go Boom started getting a lot of play
  17. Most of em are older.... Stetsasonic is from 1988 I think.....probably heard the track off it "Talkin All That Jazz" Blood of Abraham is from the early 90's....Easy E co-produced the album, but it's seriously some of the smoothest shit out there...killer samples and really intelligent lyrics. Too political for a lot of peoples tastes, but if you're able to find the track "Stabbed by the Steeple", it's a classic. Tough to find the album tho....only about 5000 pressed and it's been out of print forever Binary Star is the best hip-hop to come out of Detroit, period (yes, better than Eminem, Dilated Peoples, or Royce Da 5'9"). Those two have the best MC skills of anyone I've ever heard. Aceyalone is an LA rapper who's been around forever but stayed underground....more similar to Del the Funky Homosapien than anyone else....some really crazy samples going on though. The title track samples Peter + the Wolf.....f'ed up Handsome Boy Modeling School is Dan the Automator and Prince Paul with a bunch of guest MCs. Some of the tracks aren't really rap, but it's a really great album. I'm sure Spooks and Tribe are the two you've heard of, so I'll leave those alone...
  18. You'll have difficulty finding breaks....I'll update if anything comes up, but the breaks scene here is about 1/100th of what it is in Melbourne... House and hip-hop are probably the way to go in NYC. A safe bet is always Danny Tenaglia on Friday nights at Arc (and as mentioned, if you're more into progressive, Sander's playing there the next night). I'm sure we'll have more specifics when it gets closer...
  19. Just out of curiosity.....I wanted to go to a club in New Haven last weekend but didn't in fear that I wouldn't be able to get back to the city that night....does anyone know if there's a problem with that? How long does the metro north stay running, and are the clubs within walking distance of the stop? BTW, Smokesum....is that Highmay on PCP in your Avatar?
  20. Not sure where you draw the line between Hip-hop and rap, and I think most people would consider these more the former than the latter, but they've got people rappin on them so its rap to me... Aceyalone - Accepted Eclectic Binary Star - Masters of the Universe Handsome Boy Modeling School - So...How's Your Girl? Stetsasonic - In Full Gear Spooks - SIOSOS Tribe - Low End Theory Blood of Abraham - Future Profits
  21. Since when is Freedom of Speech Un-American?? normalnoises 17 78 03-17-2003 10:59 AM by brickhouse No biggie tho...
  22. If you checked the other thread with the almost identical title, you'd notice that I'd already posted that and the conversation's over there
