the TRUTH about the STATE OF NYC NIGHTLIFE... read on..

I don't often post, but I felt it was necesary after whats been going on in the past week. I also don't want to force my ideas and opinions on anyone but please read this with an open mind. and try to understand my points here.

I used to go to sf every saturday for four years, (from 98-01) at that time i witnessed a slow process of degenration that has only now become completely obscene. Let me take you back to 1997, 1998 - When ecstacy was the number one club drug, the dancefloor was always packed, and jonathan was playing upbeat dancing music. (found a cure, let the sunshine, fright train, etc..) if anyone there was on drugs, it was most likely exstacy, e was everywhere, k was minimal... very minimal. everyone was wide awake, ready to go, non stop dancing, happy, talkative, the whole 'family' vibe was everywhere. like most of us know, E makes you happy, keeps you awake, makes everyone friends... this was the scene at SF during that time.

Now lets fast forward to 1999,2000 - K becomes overwhelmingly the majority. G is very minimal. Jonathan starts playing less dance music and more beats, starts dissecting hte music adn then putting it back togtether. this musical experience lended itself to people doing k. you could just sit and experience the music and all the fuct up sounds jp was creating. ecstacy use slowed because you couldnt dance to this new sound, so we started to sit adn do bumps instead...

in 2000 i saw a girl die in SF from a g overdose. i believe this is the death (Victim 1) mentioned in the court papers of the latest case against Richard Grant.

Like, I said, I stopped going regularly after 2001, but I would still make an appearance for special parties, the anniversaries, haloween, etc... each time i went i would see more adn more drug use, but as the crowd changed and i saw the older faces less and less adn the younger generation infiltrating, there were new drugs that were introduced along with this scene. suddenly G was everywhere, and now Tina (crystal meth). the amount of K that i was doing back in 99, maybe 2 or 3 jars at most a night - these kids were blowing in a matter of minutes. now jars arent even enough, they carry full licks in their contact lens bottles and blow thru 800$ worth of k in a weekend....

the scene has gone to complete excess. I dont know wheter its the younger kids who are getting into the scene now adn just taking no control over thier own drug use, or wheter im too old now and somehow it became "cool" to overdose or go into a coma... but things have gotten way out of hand.

nightclubs have always had drug use, since back in the days of studio 54, and disco, etc... i am not ocmming down on drug use, dont get me wrong, im not anybodys mother - but people should know their limit and be able to control themselves... maybe they just need to be educated, but i was always one to do a little research on something before ingesting it into my body. G is meant to be taken in small capfulls, mixed with full bottles of water, not to drank pure and straight. not to be mixed with alchohol or other substances. people are dying, and although its sad, its their own fault in a way. no one is forcing them to do these gastly amounts of drugs, they are choosing this for themselves because it is accepted in the scene today and the more you do the cooler you are. ( i suppose)

in a way i can also see jonathan peters as being somewhat responsible for this mess we are in today. he has to know that every saaturday nite at sf was a drug haven, and that all his fans who he supposedly 'loves adn cares about so much' are 'dropping like flies' from excess drug abuse. wheter you move these people to exit or to south beach, its clearly not the venue, but wherever you put jonathan peters, there will be rampant drug use. it is HIS fans who are dying, it is HIS fans who are the ones who cannot control their drug use, and it is HIS fans who are ruining the nyc nightclub industry.

If JP loves adn cares about us all so much, as he often says when he does come on the mic - then why doesnt he tell his fans to stop destroying themselves? stop killing yourself? stop overdosing? stop doing so much drugs that you pass out into convulsins on a dirty floor? He obvioulsy doenst care, and thats a sad state of affairs. when the man who is i dare to say at least somewhat responsible for these kids - doesnt give a f*ck whtere or not they drop dead, so long as they pay their 50$ to get in. although it would be ironic if he 'killed' off all his fans, so there would be no one left to pay to hear him!

all im asking is that everyone who reads this, stops for a minute. and just really think about what it is thats ruining nyc nightlife. because we really dont have very many 'mega' clubs left to go to... and it would be very sad to see it all end like this, because a few hundred people who have no control over their own lives... please look into getting some help, or at least research proper drug use so you dont end up the next overdose victim in a court indictment.

clearly there is a large number of people out there, that

1-dont know how to party

2-have drug /alcohol issues/problems

3-are out of their league

lots of them here on this CP board

the problem wont go away- it/they ruin plenty of partys and clubs with their abuses-cops will find em bust em- wherever they go

Starlanyc, nice post. I agree on most points.

NYC nightlife has been going downhill for years. People predicted that the scene would somehow be "saved" with the opening of Spirit, Avalon and Crobar. It hasn't happened. The crowds are getting uglier by the day - in terms of their physical appearance and their drug habits.

Where did all the good-looking people go? Where are the people who can handle their drugs?

I used to go to Big Fridays @ Roxy for Boris in 98-99, and I used to meet new friends almost every damn week. Now, the scene is seemingly overrun by cracked-out teenagers who think they "know the scene" b/c they heard JP spin twice last year. Laughable.

The recent events @ SF and Black disgust me. As a veteran of NYC nightlife, I've never been more angry or ashamed than I am today.

montebrogan... great post. i totally agree... where did all the good looking people go? i remember big fridays at roxy and youre more then right.. everyone used to dress up back then.

everyone wanted to look good, and have a clean image, meet other people, attract other people etc.. it seems like now these people are ONLY going out to get fuct up and don't care how they look or how they will appear to everyone else...

i dont know if the genereation that you and i partied with were just more responsible, more intelligent, or whatever... but no one back then would ever want to look as fuct up as these kids look today... i mean, going out was all about feeling good about yourself, dressing up, showing yourself off, and having a good time... no one back then would want anyone to see them huddled in a corner having convulsions or puking in a trash can slumped on the floor... you just dont want everyone to look at you like that...

now it seems like, the focus is only on the drugs adn people dont give a fuck whaat kind of mess their in or how they look to other people...

god knows i would be ashamed to be such a mess like that, and i certainly wouldnt want everyone to see me like that...

i too am ashamed and disgusted by this new wave of club goers... im just hoping that the scene can get cleaned up and maybe there will be a re-birth comming soon...

what happened to the days where you needed black pants on to get in...now everyone walks around with their shirts off..god how i hate that

Definitely true. I remember wearing balck pants and a button down at Factory. I would even be a little nervous that Paris wouldn't let me in. One day, I look up and everyone is wearing sweat pants with their shirts off.

I think Crobar has the right idea about being (relatively) selective about the people they let in. Something bad is bound to happen when a bunch of crackhead slobs go to a club.

my opinion about this whole jp exit and nyc thing is that

exit is dumb for not steping up their security after what happend last week at factory and all the raids they had in the past.

as for jp iam not really a house fan but i respect jp he does his marathon sets and has a fan base and can rock a party but now his rep is ruined here in nyc basically

it started with his marathon sets he did and all the people who took drugs to stay up and go on into the afterhours and then the thing from true life iam a clubber with that meth head patricia

people see this includeing the nypd they are not as dumb as everyone thinks. Now the cops know that where ever jp spins about atleast 50% of the people in there will be on drugs and they will raid the party

there are alot of clubs out there who want jp for his music and his sets but not his crowd and that sucks for the people who go there sober to hear him dance and have a good time

as for the ny scene there are some druggies in arc and avalon dont get me wrong its not just the jp crowd but its not as much and if club owners dont step up their security then all the nyc clubs will fall one after one

big fridays at the roxy was insane. that was a great party. sf in 98 and 99 was a great party.

i remember having to get really dressed up to get into these clubs. slowly that changed and so did the crowd.

things have changed as things do, for better or worse. like i've heard many times, just like disco died so is the nyc nightlife. not really anyones fault, it just happened that way. there was a peak and it couldn't stay that way. for those that experienced the scene before it declined, we know how different things are. doesn't mean people aren't still having a great time, just means the type of party has changed.

i personally believe 75% of the people in the scene now would have never been allowed to set foot into the clubs of 97 to early 2000. doesn't make anybody back then better, just means the standards have changed. once it started, every club began to fall off. whatever, at least i got to experience things at it's peak.

as for drugs, i remember when k and g hit the scene. i overdosed on g the first time i did it, almost died. learned my lesson quick. as for k, i liked it but it did turn the vibe and people into zombies. haven't done any drugs in years and don't really miss it. i was around tina at twilo but never tried it, didn't realize everyone in their mother would be hitting it.

i'm glad i experienced nyc nightlife but the scene now isn't for me. hopefully it will be fixed for the future.

p.s. starlanyc:

i was at sf the night that girl dropped in 2000 from g. might of walked right by you. and i remember the sf where it was jumping off the hook, and when it slowly started to turn. good memories.

True - they let in the idiots and dont do a good job searching. Then when one idiot goes in they call their friends to come and where to hide their drugs so they can bring them in and sell them

Your post is very true,,,i think that GHB is a killer drug and its the one thats fucken up NYC at this time....If the only drug people were doing was E i dont think we will have this problem.,,,also you get 18 or 19 year old girls trying something new for the first time and they freak out thinking there going to die....IF YOUR GOING TO TRY SOMETHING YOU NEVER DONE BEFORE do it somewhere els not in our clubs,,,,
