  1. it's never happened to me, but i did once walk in on my college roommate. i'll never forget it: i opened the door and there were my roommate and her boyfriend, doin' it while kermit's "the rainbow connection" played in the background. disturbing.
  2. i love the intense results that come from making upbeat house remixes of sad songs. that intense contrast goes beyond bittersweet into something much more powerful, to me. right now, though, the only two examples of that i can think of are somebody's remix of toni braxton's "unbreak my heart," and nikki french's version of "total eclipse of the heart," and i don't really like either one... can anyone throw out a good example? i need to hear some more of these; i'm really jonesin' right now.
  3. what exactly does that mean? sometimes my booty's supposed to do it and sometimes it's just time for it but what, exactly, is the "percolate"?
  4. no, of course i don't deem djs wack just because they open for the big name djs; i just do so if they're only put there to occupy the time slot before the big name and told not to do anything that might overshadow the headliner. i have friends who're djs, and they've experienced these types of instructions. if these openers don't play anything too interesting, it keeps fewer people on the dancefloor and more people paying for drinks at the bar.
  5. hip, hop, ahibby, ahibby to the hip hip hoppa you don't stop the rockin' to the bang bang boogie say up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogitty beat. skittilly bee bop, we rock, a scooby doo, guess what, america? we love you! because you rock, and you roll, with-a so much soul, you can rock till you're hundred-and-one years old... "rapper's delight," sugarhill gang
  6. i'm a raver, and i guess i'll even wear that label with pride. i went to twilo for the first time last week and i there was a HUGE difference between that night and raves. first of all, it seemed that most of the people at twilo were there to pick up or be picked up. people were dressed to be seen, not to dance. and the club was so packed that there was no room to dance; twilo packs the club in because they're more about the money than the party atmosphere/the party itself. the music was the last thing on most people's minds, or so it seemed to me. one of my companions even overheard someone say, "so who's playing here tonight, anyway?" (paul van dyk, for anyone who hadn't heard A LONG TIME in advance.) i've been going to raves since '96, and while it is a younger scene it is definitely more about the music. i've only ever been to one that was too packed to dance, and that is what we call "oversold." tickets are sold in advance, and there's actually such a thing as an event selling out. this means that the rave will be pleasant and you'll always have enough space to dance and chill out. raves bring in a great variety of music (more than one type at any given event), and a great variety of djs, both local and from around the country (i will grant you that int'l djs are rarer than @ twilo). and the party is non-stop, there aren't wack "warmup" djs; every dj there has his/her own following because they're all good on their own. the vibe is also much friendlier; i always talk to lots of people whenever i go, and there are never sleazy people only there trying to pick people up. the vibe is almost always warm and inviting. there do seem to be more drugs at raves, but that doesn't mean you have to do them. which party are you going to? is it "unified," by any chance? 7. dj funk, besides making me wanna shake it, kicks ass! it's rough, though, when i'm walking around my office, absentmindedly singing, "dj funk's gotta big dick, come here, trick, ride it, bitch." usually i cut myself off somewhere in the middle, but i don't always notice what i'm singing... it's just so contagious.
  8. that's part of why i dance; it always makes me feel better, and it's one of the few things that does. put on some music that makes you crazy in a GOOD way, turn out the lights, clear some space. close your eyes and dance hard, dance with grace, dance slowly, dance low, dance faster than you can keep up with. stand still when the beat drops till you can't stand still anymore and marvel at the music. and just keep on dancing till you can't. and when you're done, you'll be sweettired, and your head will be gloriously empty of what you couldn't identify that made you feel crazy. at least, that's how it works for me, and without the dance, i don't know how i'd get along. the dance.
  9. ok, i realize i just said a mouthful, and i made a couple of scattered points, but one of the main ones is that i think house is more widespread in nyc than trance. yep.
  10. you are SO buggin'. i'm trying my ass off to move back to l.a.; i went to school there for 4 years, then moved back here after i graduated (i'm from nyc), and it was the biggest mistake of my life. i'm eversoglad to hear that trance is big in l.a., 'cause house seems to be dominating the nyc clubs as far as i can tell and jungle and d-n-b seem to be ominously looming over the nyc rave scene, ready to take over. i went to see pvd this past weekend @ twilo and, although people on the board wouldn't help me define exactly what he played, it wasn't at all like his last album (which is what i know best), which is trance, baby. he sounded hella housey to me. house is what i wanna hear when i wanna be a diva, get loose, or just let it all out, but it doesn't have the emotional depth that trance does, for me. so when i wanna dig deep, i need my trance. i also like to have both on the same night, usually, with house warming me up and trance getting me down to the nitty-gritty. hey, kids, do we have to choose BETWEEN house and trance? i think each has its place.
  11. my o my, yes! i follow the rave scene, myself, and you can't miss space girl!!! she's hard acid trance, so if you like the lighter stuff you might not like her, but she's out of this world (nudge nudge) to me and my favorite performer - she plays live sets. i also like dj x-dream, micro, and a lot of the djs that raves pull in less frequently, like sandra collins, dj funk, and a whole lot of others. find rave flyers and go!
  12. i'm with you guys; i don't see why people have to be bitter and bummed today. i painted my nails red, put a heart-shaped sequin on my face and i'm feeling festive. a lot of people here where i work are wearing red, too, and i sort of feel like we're the love brigade. why not spread a good vibe, y'all?
  13. alright everybody, let's be like the partridge family; c'mon, get happy! i don't mind valentine's day because it's yet another holiday that celebrates one of my favorite things in life: candy. between halloween and easter is the day dedicated to st. valentine, who, i like to think, loved sugar and chocolate and jell-o, oh my. so don't be glum, chums, eat some yum-yums!
  14. *double post* [This message has been edited by weyes (edited 02-14-2001).]
  15. not to outdo you, chica, but my own father forgot my birthday this year.
  16. why don't you call me, i feel like flyin' into...
  17. hey, kaspah and allnight23, yeah, it sucks that raves are $35 (although that's the door price; it's $30 in advance), but twilo is the same on s&d and pvd nights and you see 12 times as many performers or so at most raves. and let's not forget, kiddies, that variety is the spice of life. better selection of djs, better mix of people, and i almost always leave as a fan of a dj i'd never heard before. glowsticks is right, though; that venue does blow. (teeny-ass dancefloor.)
  18. don't front on unbound; he's a sweetheart! much love weyes
  19. funny, in your haste to shut down everything (including the formerly cool-ass 42nd st., which is now disney hell), you forgot to spell your name correctly, GIULIANI. * although blueangel is right, twilo's got some reorganizing of its priorities to do.
  20. a few things... petrol, don't get me wrong; i had a great time because of the people on the board. it was really wonderful to be with such open-hearted people who party the same way i do. you guys really made my night. i was there from opening till closing, and i couldn't've asked for a better time, socially speaking. at the risk of sounding redundant, YOU GUYS ROCK!!! but as the party went, i was disappointed. if i had been there by myself, i don't think i would've had a very good time or stayed as long as i did. but neydogs, i've gotta disagree with you. i was at boo 5 too, and that was the best party i've been to in recent memory. i met three people there that i'm still in contact with, one who is 23, one who's 24, and one who's 21. a lot of ravers are older than you might think; the pigtails, glitter, and bracelets can fool you! i was on line for the bathroom when i overheard a girl talking to her friend about her fiancee; she was 21 too. yes, you're one of the oldest, as am i (23), but we're not necessarily THE oldest. everybody else, i like trance. aren't the clubs and such you're talking about house venues/nights? i'm a little lost... 21. maybe it was just that night, maybe it's just twilo, maybe clubbing just isn't for me. i'm a raver, and last week was the first time i ever went to a club. most of the people were scantily clad girls and sleazy guys trying to pick them up. the girls weren't dressed to dance - their clothes were actually the kind in which they could only move a teeny bit without their boobs falling out and their shoes only allowed them to pivot an eighth of an inch every beat. the guys didn't talk to the girls first, either; they'd just grind up to them, staring at their asses or tits, depending on which direction they chose to approach them. sometimes i even wondered if they were listening to the music at all, judging by the way they moved and their lack of excitement about being there. i think that raves are much more about the music, but i'm getting older now, and i feel as though the rave scene is staying young. it seems as though ravers are "supposed" to graduate to clubs. why can't ravers stay ravers? one would think that we would still be able to keep on keepin' on. i wanna stay with the music and i don't want to spend my time with people who don't care about it and who spread a blase vibe. what do you feel about this, and what do you think i should do?
  22. both you and mysteriousss are saying that he was playing hard something, but it all seemed pretty light to me, which makes it even more confusing, but perhaps that's because i'm used to the likes of space girl... i know this may sound like i'm being obsessive and dwelling too much, but i'm trying to learn about how to communicate to others exactly what i like without just naming djs. i want to be able to say that i like such-and-such a kind of music, in case people don't know who so-and-so is. plus, it's good to know what the hell oneself is talking about. for me, ignorance is not bliss. please help me!
