  2. Another thing you can do (and what i did, back when I thought I wanted to add size) is set your alarm in the middle of the night, have a protein shake fixed, wake up down it and go back to bed. You would be amazed at the amount of calories you burn throughout the night. Nautica

  12. Please, for your sake and others stay away from the gym when you are sick. Your body will not be able to recover from a workout and it will lower your immune system and take longer to get well. You will be hurting yourself and spreading the flu virus to others (or whatever you have) Captinpec, your approach seems to be extremely selfish. We have a mutualistic relation ship with these bacteria. Freshina, while your argument contains an appeal to authority, it has no basis. Just b/c someone is a doc, does not make them an expert in the field of toxology. Now, I will be the first to say that mercury is poisonous and if taken in high enough doses, then it could cause harm. If a female is pregnant then there is no need to take the risk. But, for the average person living in the US, that has incorporated tuna as part of their diet, they will be fine. At least, at this point I have seen no eviidence to suggest that there is a risk. But, as soon as you find a study (other no, not your ex. Unless of course he has done a study) let me know, b/c at that time I will recommend to all to stop all consumption of tuna. Until that time we should be aware that tuna is poisnous and we should not live on tuna, but lets not over react. nautica

  21. I have tried just about every type of workout known to man. But, if you had a basic understanding of the intracellular/intercellular mechanisms of muscle breakdown and recovery (hell, you don't even need to go that deep, you could probably find this information in a high school level anatomy book), you would understand that your statement was incorrect. Basically, the muscle cells experience micro tears, which sends signals and the body releases growth factors to repair these tears, which eventually leads the muscles cells themselves to grow (not devide). The signals do not have a brain nor the ability to read "Men's Health". They do not understand whether to create a "bulky" or a "cut-up" look. They simply tear and then repair. It is as simple as that. As far as the cardio aspect from higher reps, which you mentioned. Studies have been done to show that once glycogen has been depleted from the body, fat is utilized for energy. Glycogen will be depleted much quicker with higher intensity workouts. If you were burning more fat with higher reps it was solely due to the fact that your actual workout time was longer. And, no I do not mean your time in the gym, I mean your actual lifting time. For example, if you lay down and do 15 reps and it takes you 15 seconds to complete the set, you will or may not use any more energy (atp) than if you do one rep that took you 15 seconds. Now if you are doing low reps, then you get up and bull shit with your buddies for a couple of minutes, then you are not helping your self burn fat. Either do one of two things (or both). When you do your heavy weights, walk (or some other carido) until your next set starts. Or get your weight training done as quickly as possible and go strait to the treadmill. That way you are depleting glycogen during your weight training and when you get to the treadmill you will start burning fat much faster. nautica

  23. When you say "effective" do you mean effective in provide you with a recreational activity in order to maintain health? Or effective in fighting or harming another individual? If it is the former, then I don't think it matters what kind of foreign label you apply to the activity. If it is the later then just carry a baseball bat. In most situations if an individual is trying to harm you, then learning a couple of cheesy moves will only piss the agressor off so that he harms you even more. Learn how to run, scream, and/or buy some mace Don't waste your time by learning karate. I am not trying to offend any person who thinks that these moves will save their life (or protect them) but if a 300 lbs person wants to hurt a person who is of normal size, then i don't care what type of martial arts the smaller person knows. And yes, I know that Tito Ortiz (sp?) can kick ass but i seriously doubt he has the need for any type of martial arts to be able to kick an untrained persons ass. nautica
