  1. i seem to have similar tastes in house DJs as you, judging from the posts... however, show me any house DJ that Crobar can feature TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW and sell out both nights... everytime Tiesto and Armin are here, thats the case, so you better believe its not dead... PvD in Central Park (2 nights, big crowd.... the full house lineup of Ultra Festival was one night at the same price, and turnout was horrible) AvB at Tobacco Warehouse BK (same as above) AvB & Tiesto every time theyre at Crobar (2 nights, always packed to the brim) Ferry Corsten's LEF parties (they were monthly at Crobar for a year, and probably had the best, most up-for-it crowd, and you guessed it, always packed) Sean Tyas is going to be at Sullivan Room (hey, isnt that supposed to be a house, tech, and breaks venue... maybe not, but have they ever had trance there? hmmmm... why now then, it must be the RIGHT time, in their eyes ;-)) G&D at Pacha (didnt pack it out but came pretty dammmm close) ATB at Pacha next month (whoa whoa whoa... find me one other Pacha venue in the world that has trance acts... isnt Pacha a houseeee venue? guess they find profits in having trance as well :-)) and sure enough, there will be a trance event for New Years Eve, there always is, and it WILL be packed, unlike whatever 24 hour marathon so-and-so NYC DJ will be doing... no hard feelings but i just LOVE responding to "trance is dead" because i get it all the time from people who have never been to any trance events, and i just have to correct their ignorance (not saying youre ignorance, im talking bout MY people)
  2. wow i think thats a great middle-ground... another thing i heard as a result from the meeting is that clubs will be able to have off-duty cops as part of the security, working hand-in-hand, which is cool i guess (instead of having angry on-duty cops looking for an easy target to fulfill their quota)... from what i read on the results of the meeting, the city itself seemed very reasonable with its demands, i didnt hear ne of the 2 or 3AM closing ideas that the news were splashing all over the place the night before as possibilities... and to tell the truth, everything i read as far as the ideas put forth seem very very reasonable, and im glad to have heard that those involved with the nightlife board in the proceedings cooperated very well with the board holding the proceedings... its about time they have some SMART ideas put forth to deal with the problem.... up til now, the best way to describe it is like shooting an annoying fly with a gun.... theres no need to use that gun, theres a smart way to get rid of that annoying (yes) but overcomeable problem, and im glad the government is figuring it out.... tis a billion dollar business and theyd be surprised how much our nightlife is actually still looked up to around the world, and how NYC is still regarded as a cool destination (to those who havent been here yet, at least, which is still a big tourist market.... and im only saying these things from personal experience of people ive met overseas and their continuing wonder of new york nightlife, and even new york dj exports)
  3. ill be @ Pacha for Collabs 3000.... Liebing and Speedy J, now that's REAL techno
  4. i agree with everything you just said, you took the words out of my mouth
  5. Beyer's been playing very minimal, which is a shame, i used to love his more artistically full and electro-tinged techno sets, not to mention the heavy stuff i heard him play the two times i heard him play the first time i heard him... i like some minimal but the minimal he plays lately just has no substance to it at all, zero.
  6. i think ray's talking about the new venue, its not the same 39th street one, it moved over the spring
  7. wierd because Jermaine has never given me problems... also, if i got the right person in mind, one of my friends is friends with him so he was letting her in (underage) from the beginning... i had the impression he was one of the cool few there
  8. yeah i guess i did... and to be honest, i have utmost respect for JP, the person... its obviously not HIS idea to have a "victory" party, and its not HIS fault that his fans are so "ah in your face!" as if a DJTIMES poll matters... so i uess you can redirect my comments to his fans, not to himself, because its his fans that are so diehard (too diehard, but ignorantly so) that they give themselves and JP himself a bad name, that will not be able to be taken seriously elsewhere
  9. PVD won DJ MAG TOP 100 (the most credible) last year... was there a "PVD DJ MAG TOP 100 VICTORY PARTY" @ his favorite club in Berlin?... no there wasnt.... what there was was a 3-4 gigs a week tour schedule he had to continue on after the awards ceremony.... tonight's party just shows how much his staff and fans have something to prove (in an immature way).... all the runners up have tour schedules to continue, throughout American and abroad (Deep Dish @ Crobar this week and DC the night after, Lawrence was @ Crobar last week and Boston the night after, Morillo's busy in Europe being Morillo)... <--- THAT is the mark of a country's favorite DJ... actually having a TOUR schedule THROUGHOUT that country... does that not make sense to those ignorantly raising their JP flags in a "i dont care what you say" way? its okay to party after your team/country wins at the "commonwealth games".... but in the end, ur not shit in the olympics
  10. my message to Ultra Festival NY: you gotta do better than that ...im not one to be close-minded to acts ive never seen before, and im definitely not one to prefer WHAT IM USED TO over WHAT IVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE... but the lineup on main stage just wasnt doing it for me... i was not feeling Soulwax at all (a lot of people werent, considering the tent was really packing up while they were on)... i love live acts, i love different music, but i really would have liked so many other live acts more than Soulwax... a Depeche Mode or Killers or Mars Volta or Royksopp or Sigur Ros or Basement Jaxx or Planet Funk or Infusion or Goldfrapp or Crystal Method or even Scissor Sisters would have totally done for me what Soulwax didnt do for me (just to show im not an ignoramus that wants constant house house house house trance trance trance, i really do appreciate different music out there, but after last night, not Soulwax's)... ...JXL totallyyyy had an awesome show, they should have put him at 8 instead of Moby... Moby was not doing it for me at all, an absolutely lukewarm headliner, i dont know what Ultra was thinking, if they were trying to get the whole New York legend thing on main floor going, he was the wrong guy to bring in, especially not while Benassi was totally ripping the tent... ...i was in the tent for most of Benassi's set, walking out and then back in to check if the sonic disaster, Soulwax, was done with their set... Benassi absolutely RIPPED the tent, everyone was feeling it, he played really rocked out minimal/electro, and the vibe was SO there (and so were the refugees from main stage)... ...i have nothing but good things to say about Digweed's set, he really BROUGHT IT, it sucks there was no afterparty with him (if Avalon or Pacha werent so HALF-ASSED, they woulda had them there, but its sad that a 19 year old has a better grip on the scene, and whats good for it, than New York's megaclub owners)... point is, Digweed rocked it, i was in and out of the tent (hate all you want) because Boris was ripping it simultaneously with Digweed... never was a humongous Boris fan but i liked what i heard last night... the vibe during Boris' set left a lot to be desired, after such an energetic reaction by the crowd to Benassi's set, but i was enjoying the beats there and on main stage both... ...when all is said and done, without me having been to Ultra in Miami, i can still say it seemed like an all too amateur attempt at a festival... the promotion was shotty at best and it showed in the attendance numbers, it was probably 50% filled if LUCKY... the lineup left a lot to be desired (even though i had a free pass, for 50$, when you compared the lineup u get in Miami for 70$, all u gotta say is "what the hell, man?")... sound was great though, and the light/display was on point for the most part, just think they need to step it up next year... 50$ a ticket festivals dont promote themselves... another thought for next time, but they should bring in more festival-friendly acts such as Infected Mushroom or Plump DJs, to name a couple (theres so many more better choices they could have made for the lineup)... Moby was not festival-friendly and as much as i liked Digweed's set, i wouldnt have chosen him as the headliner, at least for the New York chapter of Ultra... ...i had fun with my friends, as always, but if i had to grade the festival, i'd give it a 5.5 at best
  11. ive been saying this for a year and a half, theres so much SHIT minimal out there, and the few good tracks out there, the minimal freaks CALL "minimal", but its really progressive or electro or toned-down tech
  12. i dont think ive seen ne other DJ or his fans take the DJTIMES poll so seriously
  13. yeah id expect Cielo or Guesthouse or Home or maybe even Pacha to have a Hed Kandi party, but i guess not haha this should be interesting
  14. Felix would be a perfect pickkk, good thinking.... and Marco V too :-)
  15. correct me if im wrong, but Hed Kandi is a group/recordlabel of British funky disco-house DJs, isnt it? if i were still in New York (ill be in Europe then), id be pretty excited about this nighttt
  16. do these guys really have the money for this type of talent? haha.... this is some Made Event type stuff (money-wise) with some of the talent you guys are naming.... keep in mind this is a Thursday party
  17. do you know what ur talking about? hes not "bored with that sound", he still plays almost nothing but trance in his sets, and he just happens to have some fun producing electro-ish stuff, but in no way is he running away from the trance sound, thats just stupid... anyone whos a Ferry fan or listens to his sets (at least one a month) know hes just as trance as he was 5 years ago... his set at Cielo however might be on the electro tip of things but thats only because of the venue itself and the fact that its a private party, not a public trance massive event @ Crobar, so i would expect electro tonight.... but anyone whos a Ferry fan knows hes still one of the kings of trance (he should be #3 on the DJMag Top 100, in my opinion)
  18. he did Spirit last time he was in New York...
  19. lets get people that arent always in New York anyway.... Austin Leeds, Sander Van Doorn, Donald Glaude, Laurent Wolf, Clamaran, etc.
  20. yeah but you have Richie Hawtin going gay on Sven Vath in the circles hahaha.... listened to a Richie Hawtin set and i gotta say there were some good songs.... but any other minimal set ive heard from any other DJ comes no where close to being that good
  21. everybody's riding the minimal bandwagon nowadays.... theres a few songs here and there that i like (ive tried hard to like the sound) but so many other songs just sound unoriginal pieces of copy-cat production, with everyone trying to emulate everybody else's sound of minimal... bleep boop cshhhhh tsk tsk untz untz untz bleep boop cshhhhh tsk tsk
  22. and take a look back at what happened to AVALON.... for a couple years, AVALON had the best, the most different, the most refreshing, and the most groundbreaking in EDM lineups of DJs week after week, whether with house (Donald Glaude, Felix, Junkie XL, or Tall Paul) or trance/tech (J00F, Liebing, or Ferry)..... and look what happened.... it died.... because people wanted JP or Boris or Morillo, all DJs that werent playing @ AVALON.... sure enough, CROBAR picked up some of AVALON's successful nights like Ferry Corsten and Armin and a lot others they thought they could market, and SPIRIT took the rest (which eventually died because of Boris/JP/Morillo/insert-big-NYC-DJ-here).... i think its good that PACHA's gunna have hip hop, otherwise, without it, i think it would be on the fast-road to shutting down...
