  4. Right. Refeeding has *partly* to do with a chemical called leptin, which I'm not even remotely qualified to talk about. It's not really a "kick in the ass" -- more like a nasty trick to keep it from slowing down. Most people refeed on weekends, since that's when it makes the most sense anyway. I can eat complete crap all weekend and still wake up Monday morning and weigh less than I did Friday morning! But during the week, I'm *very* strict with my calories... Refeeding also has great psychological benefits, especially when you're looking at a long road to reaching your target weight. It's much easier to keep away from your favorite foods 6 days a week for 6 months, than for 6 months straight. I think that's the primary reason people should consider refeeding. It's possible to do shorter cycles, but for most people I really don't think it's worth the trouble of trying to keep track of it.

  9. No no... see, I said that 2lbs/week is a realistic goal. An arm is much heavier than 2lbs. A foot a week is a perfectly reasonable way to lose weight! (And you can chop off a few fingers, too, to get that extra "definition"...)

  11. True story: In 5th grade, I had a classmate whose father was a plastic surgeon. One of his patients shot him to death because she was unsatisfied with her breast implants. :eek: Implants are DANGEROUS, people!!!
  12. I don't read them myself; I just make it a point to get all my advice from people who do. Check out the newsgroup misc.fitness.weights... there are some VERY educated people (and a whole lot of idiots, of course) who post there.

  15. I haven't read the article, but I really doubt that's his actual workout. Bodybuilders get paid so ghost writers can use their names. Besides, you'd better have a healthy steroid regimen if you hope to avoid overtraining on most of the workouts those mags publish. Don't forget, folks, bodybuilding magazines are vehicles for supplement advertisements, which heavily affects the information they publish. That's *especially* true of anything published by Joe Weider. Sports journals are where the real information is at.

  17. About 40 minutes. Too much longer and I start feeling overtrained and lose my motivation to go to the gym. This overtraining effect has actually been documented and linked to the catabolic hormone cortisol, which your body starts producing during intense exercise (assuming you're actually working out and not just standing around gawking at the gym bunnies). Cortisol also reduces your T-cell count, so shorter workouts are better for your immune system as well.
  18. I often eat whatever I feel like on weekends (though when I'm eating healthy I tend not to crave sweet foods at all, fortunately). Refeeding is good for you and can actually help you lose weight.
  19. That was my first thought too. Also... I've met bisexual women who at one point preferred women, but now prefer men, and vice versa. It doesn't make her a lesbian, it just makes her a bi woman who currently prefers women. I think of a lesbian as someone who generally doesn't even consider men.

  22. I do cardio for my heart and lungs -- if it were only to lose weight I'd just focus on my diet. I run 3x/week on non-lifting days, first thing in the morning, because that's when it's most convenient.

  24. Crash diets are generally ineffective in the long term -- people tend to gain the weight right back. The most you can reasonably expect to lose and keep off is about 2lbs/week. If you gained the weight over a single weekend, though, my guess is that a lot of it is just food and water weight. Try going back to a sensible diet for the rest of the week and see what happens (like elementx said).
