  1. What's your pick for events (a single night or day) in NYC in 2002 that you went to? No bashing please. There were too many for me to choose from, but I think I'll go with PVD @ Arc edit: Codica, you've given me an idea... but would asking about the best/favorite regular (weekly/biweekly/monthly) event create too much drama?
  2. 431 W 16 St, between 9th and 10th Aves (closer to 10 Ave) I think that's across the street from the side of the Chelsea Market, where the loading docks are
  3. Hmm... if I can recover from New Years Eve (well, technically most of the partying happens on New Years Day) in time
  4. Yeah, add another one who says that Thursdays @ Centro should be tried. Less variety of music though, but top notch main floor music and a good crowd. That room across from the DJ booth is always VIP. I don't remember seeing instances of the Pinky or Tapioca being closed off for private parties, but it would be nice if they could announce such things in advance. Here's the schedule: http://www.centro-fly.com/standard.htm I think whoever is playing there on a given night can have an effect on what kind of crowd there will be. I have had fun on Fridays and Saturdays there, but they're less predictable. If there's a DJ listed for the Pinky or Tapioca, then those rooms are more likely open to all for that night. For the day after New Years, only Low End Specialists (the residents) are listed. They're really good and alone could make the night, but maybe there could be a last-minute addition to make it better. Is there any possibility of that? I believe I have seen that happen before.
  5. What's your price? The regular $125 price is a bit steep for many on this board, who probably spend too much on clubbing anyways. Also, it seems that for most, The World is not held in the highest regard as a venue. Tiesto comes into NYC regularly anyways - although the $40-50 prices then are still bordering on ridculous, they're a lot more do-able. Maybe the price could be justified for someone who drinks more than $80 worth of champagne. How many people here can do that and stay upright enough to enjoy Tiesto's tunes? I think his nights are the best when his die-hard fans can afford to represent. But I hope he still rocks the place on NYE, and that all who attend enjoy it and report on it here.
  6. It's an understatement to say that Marco V delivered an ass-kicking set. The first few mixes were a little off as he was getting used to the equipment, but he was tight after that. He played from 2:30 to 5:30. If he played longer, you'd probably see legs falling off. After his set, he came out to the bar and shook hands/signed autographs/took pictures with everyone. He's quite short, especially for a Dutchman. I'll let others decide on exactly what genres were played, but it was hard and fast most of the time. Near the end of his set, he put on anthems like Simulate, GODD, Cafe del Marco V. I was actually hoping DJ Remy would do another closing set like he did on the Picotto night. But Victor did an excellent set. Out of the Blue sounded really nice on Arc's Phazon when he played it. Ferry Corsten and Kid Vicious stopped by earlier, while Remy was spinning. It was quite a weekend for me, as I saw and heard 4 Dutch DJ's. Could've been 5 in a week if Tiesto @ World wasn't so damn expensive.
  7. Although he's not the reason, Danny Tenaglia (resident on Fridays) actually likes it that Arc doesn't serve alcohol. He doesn't like drunk people being there.
  8. Bring the two back to play together again! Do y'all think there could be a night with Kid Vicious as the feature DJ? I wonder how many people now know about him just from that night.
  9. The first song by Ferry? With the guitar riff? That was "Breezer" by Junkie XL & Sasha
  10. DJ Remy opening and closing I think he's doing 11-2 then 5-close (so Marco V is doing a 3-hour set) Check the Arc board for more details He closed for Picotto I don't think he will disappoint
  11. Amazing! Well, the wait in line for the security check sucked, but other than that... Kid Vicious opened up and then in the last 45 minutes tag-teamed with Ferry. He's damn good. I thought he played a little fast for so early in the night, but I was loving it. Too bad he didn't play Hardly a Day, as I had hoped he would I also thought it was remarkable that there was only one song repeated (i.e. played by both Ferry + Kid Vicious) in the whole night. Maybe they worked together in filling their boxes. Was that Asian woman in the booth his gf? What a hottie. Ferry started at 2:15 am, and really had the place jumping at 5 am, when he played Ghost, followed by Out of the Blue 2002, then 1999 (or was it 1998 or 2000 ?), then Solstice, then Yet Another Dub After that, he played some pretty hard stuff. Later on when tag-teaming, he put on Carte Blanche, and right before the buildup, he cut the music to get the crowd going, and then after the clapping and cheering, brought it back. It was orgasmic. The floor was pretty crowded during 2-4 am. Maybe they need to take the couches away the next time he plays there. The place closed at 6:30 am.
  12. The party last night was a great time! Hisham (midiman on this board - dang, he's blowing up, having done Arc, Discotheque and Centro all in just this month) did a fantastic job opening, then LES tore the place up. The crowd seemed to be of the right size. Thanks for the comp, DaVe! For the club, I think I more than made up for it with drinks That's on top of the "make your own drink" deal that DaVe got for the bunch
  13. On http://www.id-t.com At 2 pm EST, Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance radio show, with the top 20 of 2002, chosen by the listeners At 4 pm, Marco V - this is probably the Essential Mix set that aired on Radio 1 a few weeks back Get in early if you can, otherwise if the bandwidth is maxed out, you won't be able to connect
  14. I'll be in the Baltimore area on January 3. Is anything good going on there that night? If so, details please.
  15. Although it's a pool hall, you could try Q-Lounge, on W 19th St (near corner of 7th Ave) Maybe other pool halls have the same things, but it's a nice place- they have plenty of seating, lots of tv screens, bar with food and drinks, a DJ There have been some attempted official Monday night meetups there.
  16. I finally experienced one of Junior's sets from start to finish. Was anyone else there this past Sunday (12/22)? Junior started at 6 am, ended at 3 pm I thought the first 5.5 hours were great. Lots of different styles, lots of energy. It was all a blur exactly what he played - I was sober, but quite tired from stuff earlier in the day. But then from 11:30 am to 1:15 pm, what he (she ) played just bored me (and it seemed most of the crowd) to tears, and he seemed to be lazy with the mixing. Seemed like many of his remixes of commercial tunes were played during that time - nothing wrong with that, just the way he played it. That did make me wonder about his 20-hour set on New Years Day - how much of it will be any good? When the music stopped at 1:15, I thought it was another early closing that I happened to catch, like when I went to SF. But then that was the beginning of the 1 hr 45 min closing set, which I guess made up for what I had just heard earlier. The light show that went along with it was quite cool. btw, What happened to the snow machine at Exit? Who was it that went on on 4 am? I saw him before when Jason Ojeda did that one Saturday night, and IMO seems to be pretty good. Does he usually go on right before Junior?

  18. I laughed when I first saw people dj'ing a party with mp3's (I believe with Virtual TurnTable), but I think things have changed since then. IMHO, if 1. the music was obtained legally 2. the sound quality is as good as it is on vinyl or CD 3. if you can do all the things you can do with vinyl 4. the DJ has the skills to use them then it's all good I love my vinyl, but with mp3's 1. you could get music right away without leaving home 2. there's no (or less) hauling of those heavy boxes or crates 3. with less space and weight, you can bring more tunes with you 4. your storage space doesn't fill up as quickly, and you don't have to worry as much about what to do when you move 5. if you have tunes that you regret getting, or get promos that are absolute crap, you can more easily get rid of them 6. if you're a traveling DJ, you can listen to your stuff while you're on the road 7. don't have to deal with licking the cartridge contacts, or tonearm balance, or anti-skate With stuff like Memory Stick, we might someday see the "decks" get smaller, lighter, and more portable. Good if you do mobile, or just want to use your own setup at a gig. There are still some issues with using mp3's, but I'm sure they'll be taken care of. For anyone who has DJ'ed with a laptop, has the comp ever crashed on you during a gig? Maybe another downside is that you can't throw stuff out to the crowd like Armin, Tiesto, and PVD have done. Well, maybe you can throw a CD-R or memory stick (someday) full of songs, if you've made a backup for your next gig.
  19. Speaking of which... Hot mix by this guy on the Essential Selection Catch it while you can! http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/petetong/
  20. No, not quite To hear what Corsten sounds like (and I wouldn't say it's goa, but I could be wrong), go to: http://www.clubglow.com (go to "Audio" if it doesn't automatically play, or if it's someone else's set) http://www.ferrycorsten.org This is the Tsunami you're probably thinking of: http://www.tsunami-trance.com
  21. I believe Filter 14 is doing a party for $10 but that starts at 2 am I found this event - Cafe Novecento, $10 http://www.naughtybooth.com/board/calendar.php?s=&action=getinfo&eventid=2817
  22. Does anyone know the set times? Will there be other DJ's that night? Who and what times?

  24. What does Bloomberg have to do with it? He's trying to keep the strike from happening. And he has the contingency plan in place just in case. Maybe he would if he could, but it's just too bad that the city simply can't afford to give the transit workers the pay raise they want.
  25. Imagine those two spinning together... No, that didn't happen at Glow, but there's a video of AVB there, and audio of Corsten's set http://www.clubglow.com Johan Gielen is playing there next Saturday (and also March 8, 2003). Lucky bastards. Too bad I missed him when he played during 4th of July weekend. Someone must bring him back to NYC!
