  1. I haven't heard one tune spun by the infamous JP but I'm so going to keep it that way. From what I can tell he's the most overblown, overplayed, overtalked-about and overdone DJ in the city. I think I'll stay in the 1% of the CP population that isn't drooling over JP.
  2. 225 Houston St (Houston & A) But watch out - Saturday night is their "gay" night so don't show up if you're phobic at all.....
  3. Unless that blurry action is totally throwing me off, that's not Larry Tee spinning. I'm working the door on Saturdays so I wasn't inside most of the night so I don't remember what Larry was wearing. However, I could be totally wrong here about that not being Larry. But anyways, the club-owners did one hell of a job revamping the club. It looks amazing....
  4. 1993 would definitly have to be the best place for a trance fan.
  5. What a great question! I've only been going out for 4 months but this is what I've found (and seeing that these are the non-trance/techno clubs with a complete twist on club personalities and 'hipsters' there could be a few tweaks): 1) People need to stop going out just to be seen and to look as glam as possible. Sure these "club personalities" (most call them 'clubkids') add to the look of the scene but this "ultra-hip" crowd could use a definite infusion of kids that are there just to hear the music and get down to it. I've danced too many nights all by myself alone on the floor with multitudes of clubbers just standing around 'looking cool'. 2) DJ's shouldn't be afraid of playing tunes that aren't right "at this moment". 1st off, if I heard a song that was 10 years old I would flip (so would anyone else who knew what it was). However, most likely, the kids aren't going to know what it is so what difference does it make? To them it's "new" anyways. 3) An overcrowded floor defeats the whole purpose of going out (in my opinion). If you can't move on the dancefloor than what's the use of going out to hear good music if you can't dance to it??? However the club runners are out to make as much money as possible so I don't see this problem ever getting fixed. It would be nice if NYC had a 'members only' club that catered to those of us who want nothing more then to dance all night long. It'd be nice if someone, somehow, emerged with the ability to make this happen. When the scene isn't run by the almighty dollar then you end up with a scene that blows everything else out of the water.
  6. 1. Larry Tee 2. Sammy Jo 3. MisShapes 4. Ryan McKnight 5. Michael T If you know who these DJ's are personal message me for a free pass to get into Bank (Element) on Saturday....
  7. Without a doubt - if you're looking for solid electro check out Larry Tee at Duvet (the night is called Distortion Disko). But beware - it's mainly a gay crowd with a heavy influx of "club personalities". Larry tends to shy away from the usual House and he definitely doesn't play 2-step.
  8. "Saturdays have been boring for way too long. Finally after the success of Distortion DIsko (Duvet) and Disgraceland Thursdays, there is a new Saturday party, BANK 225 E. Houston at Essex, by the parties' co-creators Larry Tee and Josh Wood. DJs Larry Tee and Lina spin along with hosts Sophia Lamar, Jimmy Im, Amanda Lapore, Earl Dax, Matt Tratner, James Coppola, Brandon Olsen, Chad Hahne, Marlon Gobel, Lui Antonius, Joseph Isreal and Kim Aviance. Be sure to be on the main dancefloor at 1AM when we drop hundres of dollars!!! Witness the recreation of the famous Patty Hearst bank heist. Ogle the fresh batch of East Village no-traditional gogo-boys and girls!!!" - Larry Tee That's the email Larry sent out to everyone. I know most of you guys are into Trance & Tribal but if you're in the mood to see how another side of NY lives come check this out. I'll be working the list at the door at what promises to be a lot of fun. Larry was a major force in the Electroclash scene in the early 90's here in NYC (Larry goes way back tho - I saw him at a New Wave/Goth club in '85 when I was 14). However, Larry plays Electro now.... To get a taste of his music check out his new single that's coming out soon called "Licky" with Princess Superstar providing the vocals (If you do check out the song, give it a chance. I had to hear it about 3 times before I really got into it - the "bass" is just amazing and unlike most basses out there): http://www.cjmikey.com/lickystream.html Here's a couple of other tunes he plays (tho these are the originals and he plays the remixes of 'em): Goldfrapp's Number 1: http://www.cjmikey.com/goldfrappstream.html Royksopp's What Else Is There?: http://www.cjmikey.com/royksoppstream.html *I've included music because I firmly believe music is, and should be, the most important aspect of the night.
  9. No offense but Tribal needs to go too..... But like I said before - if you're enjoying the music then fuck what everyone else thinks of it - as long as you're into it then who cares???
  10. "Glammour Girl" by Danny Tenaglia (I think) back in '93. Goes something like "Is that a boy a girl or just an acid head, oh it's a space cadet, no chicken queen, or it could be a nark, or maybe a shit-kicker, hell's angel or just a gigilo..." - the whole song goes on and on with "spoken" lyrics like that and it used to be a favorite of ours back when it 1st came out around '93. I think the lyrics might have been lifted from a movie or something.
  11. ('92) Elustrious' "Dance No More" ('93/'94) LSG's remix of Paragliders ('94) Perfecto's Instrumental remix of Opus iii's "Hand in Hand"
  12. Hey - The first night I started going back out into the scene I went to Lady Miss Keir's birthday party and caught the last few songs of Cowboy Mark. This is definilty someone I would like to go hear out again so if anyone has a clue on any info on him please pass it my way.
  13. Check out Larry Tee's Myspace site @ http://www.myspace.com/nylarrytee If you're into Electro/Electroclash or whatever "hipsters" (& the "hipsters" phrase is so non-hipster-like) are into these days check out his schedule for upcoming shows. His "straight" nights, for now, are: Larry Tee February, 22 2006 at Mini-Nouveau @ Lit Lounge 93 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10003 Cost: TBA "Straight mixed hipsters that like to have fun" I'm pretty sure it's a weekly thing happening. I'll be updating his site with all his shows but I would strongly suggest checking out his gay nights too even if you are straight. I've noticed a lot more str8's coming to these parties just to hear the music.
  14. Trance is T-I-R-E-D When something that was once "underground" hits the mainstream it's bound to become useless to those of us who like a little 'bite' in the edginess of our music. Sure Paul van Dyk, the "#1" DJ in the world, is all about trance and draws massive crowds but those "crowds" can have an ill affect on the scene. I'm not trying to diss 97% of clubplanet's population but Trance has been tired for well over 10 years now in my opinion. But hey, each to his own: if you're into the music then more power to you.
  15. I don't know about 80's music in the NYC club scene now but Larry Tee, who was a huge force in the Electroclash movement, has a night at Duvet on Thursdays called Distortion Disko which is probably the best place if you want to dance to the latest electro music. I haven't checked it out yet but Happy Valley on Tuesdays is suppose to be a lot of fun. Bank, Larry's new club on Saturdays, is starting this Saturday. However if you can't deal with clubkids and gay men then I would avoid these places (don't get me wrong, there are a lot of str8's there just for the music). There's obviously 'straight' electo bars out there so lemme know if you're looking for something more like that. I can always ask Larry when he's playing at a str8 club - he's doing that this Tuesday I think.
  16. http://blog.myspace.com/nylarrytee Tracks from his upcoming release "Rock-n-Rave" are posted. This is my myspace page which is going totally neglected: http://www.myspace.com/cjmikey
  17. Personally I like mixed bars, not too straight, not too gay. Spaces that are all about the music draw in a crowd from every angle however I haven't really found that type of club yet in NYC. However this is what I've found: Distortion Disko at Duvet on Thursdays has some really good electro music tho Larry of course throws in some more mainstream stuff to keep the crowd happy. It's officially gay but it's filled with clubkids and some straights. It's a very stylish crowd. If you're at all comfortable being around gay people and want to see what hipster is, go to Distortion Disko. Opaline on Fridays - 4 floors. If you're looking for massive amount of people with a wide variety of music this is the place. Although it gets a little too insane for my taste sometimes. Happy Valley on Tuesday - Going this Tuesday for the 1st time but I've heard nothing but excellent things about this club. Bank on Saturdays starting 2/18. Larry's new club promises to be just as good, if not better, than Distortion Disko.
  18. I'm the web guy for GBH, "business partners" with Larry Tee (which is a joke since he signed a "Now Explosion" LP for me over 20 years ago) and I'm working at Distortion Disko (Duvet on Thursdays) and I'll be working at Larry's new club Bank when it opens on 02/18.
  19. If you guys are interested in Electroclash I'll ask Larry Tee where he's spinning there. I'm Larry Tee's "business partner" - you can also check out his Myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/nylarrytee I just put up 4 tracks off his upcoming CD Rock-n-Rave & I'll put up the WMC info stuff there soon.
  20. Right now the party is set for 5/20. If you want, join the Myspace page to keep updated on the party: http://groups.myspace.com/simonsclub If you're interested Simon is also throwing a reunion at the WMC this year. Simon has given me permission to throw one in NYC and a lot of things are up in the air. Dubtribe has said they'd perform but that's not a sure-thing yet, Chris Harshman (the resident headliner fom Simon's) is spinning and I've asked Chris Milo (DJ 3) to spin since he used to be a resident too. However things with this party change constantly it seems.
  21. hey mr - i'm going to place this mix on my DJ Streams page @ http://www.cjmikey.com if you don't mind. If you could get in touch with me so i can include a bio/pic with the piece. THANKS!!! Michael
  22. hope you don't mind deepie but i'm "borrowing" your mp3 for my new page, http://wwwcjmikey.com, and i'm placing it under the full listing of dj streams. i'll be stealing a pic of you too so check it out if you can and let me know if you approve (or if you'd rather have a different (or another) stream up there).
  23. http://www.cjmikey.com This is my 3rd site: - Top 40 Electronic tunes from NYC's nitelife. (My own personal opinion - there's only 10 right now but room for 40). Later on people will be able to vote for the top 40. - Streams of parties, such as Larry Tee's Distortion Disko party @ Duvet on Thursday night (the party is brought to you by GBH). - Bio's for the dj's who spin the record currently being played. If you happen to spin a record on the site let me know and I'll include a link and bio while the song is playing. - Videos - The chick is my better half dancing at PVD in Central Park & one of Larry Tee in Amsterdam. - The best set ever heard before (currently my favorite: Paul van Dyk's first time playing in America in 1993). This is a non-profit website here just to share the music of NYC. If anyone has any videos, songs or ideas that would like to share feel free to help me make the most out of this website so we can enjoy the music of the city.
  24. I have to post this because the only LP I have in my collection that's signed is by Larry Tee's 80's group "Now Explosion". To check out Larry's site go to http://www.electroclash.com Here's an abbreviated version of the flyer: Legendary DJ Larry Tee and guests play a musical format we call Distortion Disko (which comprises new wave house (((sidenote from michael: that happens to be my URL!!!)))) and a freaky mash-up of the popluar tunes of the day) to a discerning crowd of music lovers, freaks, booty-shakers, fashionistas, and beautiful people.
